they are side airbags. front airbags are required by the US government. Hopefully the side ones will be soon.

MPVs are really reliable vans. we used to have the 1989 MPV and it lasted us over 19 years. it does suck as they get older though

If the side impact & head/curtain airbags were standard on the 2006 "Mazda MPV", It would receive a good rating. Trust me, safety is not an option.
