  • Because Dickenson"s book is more a "scientific description that explains how dragons flew and what evidence shows they were real" Rankin Bass was able to create their own fantasy epic rather then adapt a well known classic story like "the Hobbit" and "Return of The King". So they knew they would be less likely to be criticised by book purists! So they really had fun with this one! You can watch my hand drawn animated,BALDER'S EGG, etc. that I made on my channel page with fantasy creatures!!

  • Well after ordering from Warner Brother Archive Collection I now have my dvd of "the Flight of Dragons" and I am both impressed and amazed! I had forgotten just how beautifully orchestrated this is but I did remember the entertaining characters and Rankin Bass's fantasy storyline loosely based on the Dickenson book! The movie does agreat job of using Anderson's illustration style for characters and backround! It makes me nostalgic for hand painted cells!

  • @jonhayashi1 hey...just a question you might know. ever see an animated dragon show, where this kid (or guy) raised a dragon to fight other dragons. something like Hearts blood? I have no idea but this brought that show back to me somehow. anyone?

  • @lanebatts26 I think the title is Heart's Blood and I believe it was a half hour animated special that was animated by Hanna Barbera's australian studio for a show entitled"CBS Storytime" which had different animated versions of children's literature shown in the early saturday afternoons, maybe in the 1980s. It was unusual in that the teenager was an alien on another strange planet where dragons were everywhere! Bob Keeshan(Captain Kangaroo) was the host of the show! Wow, I remembered that!!

  • Is that Barry Manilow playing the flute?

  • Dem nipple spikes.

  • No, father. Nay, father. NO, father! You're a fucking idiot who doesn't get anything right father, shut up.

  • FUS RO DAH

  • I've been trying to remember the name of this movie for years. Finally popped in my head today. Thank you so much for uploading this scene I haven't seen it in nearly 20 years.

  • good and nice cartoon

  • I would rather watch stylised 2D hand drawn animation like this then watch CGI 3D realistic animated people that look like wax clones! The designs of the characters and backrounds in FLIGHT OF DRAGONS look like Wayne Anderson's illustrations for the book! I just go more for hand crafted animated art films. Use CGI for animating machines not people and animals! My hand drawn animated THE MAGIC ARROWS and BALDER'S EGG I made have fantasy creatures in them and are on my channel page on you tube!

  • I would have lived a life with thee lassie.....so now I die.

  • Fucking epic part

  • Heard that epic line again...goosebumps!!!!

  • As a kid, i remember watching this and being blown away. I was young and the idea that someone would sacrifice all to stop a greater evil, kind of stuck with me the rest of my life. I'd recall pieces of the oath for many years and only recently got the whole thing, but it's great to actually see the scene that helped shape the person i'd become. Sir Orrin will forever remain, one of my heroes.

  • this one and last unicorn are one my best cartoon movies ever

  • @urdakar Agreed.

  • perfekt

  • I forgot how beautful the flute sound was when Giles played i, wow do I need to rewatch this movie

  • Probably the most powerful scene in the movie, it is this fight, as well as the battle with the Ogre, that I always remember when I think of this movie.

  • She didnt miss Bryagh. When you look at the movie its obvious that the arrow is deflected by the dragon scales on Bryaghs forehead. Not much any of them could do against Bryagh anyway. Sir Orrin won because Bryagh was overconfident and wanted to burn him to death instead of just crushing him. Sir Orrin managed to ignite the hydrogen-gas inside Bryagh because he's sword was super heated by the flames but ended up cooking himself in the proces. A worthy sacrefice thought.Great nostalgic trip BTW;)

  • AH-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaa....I"LL CRUSH YOU BOTH, YA FILTHY CRAWLY!

  • How the hell do you miss a Target THAT large?

  • This was epic when I was a kid, it's even more epic now.

"Preying? Now DIE" Flame, Resist, Super-heated blade "Fuck you dragon!" Kill Shot.

  • You know as much as I love this movie, that Danielle character was pretty much there for no other reason than to be a meat shield. Seriously other than being the love interest for Orin (over the course of a night apparently) did she even have a purpose? The elf was massacred himself yet even he did something in the long run with the flute. No don't get me wrong it's a good movie and all, that's just a big nit-pick of mine.

  • @balrog13571 hahaha that's so true..

  • @tfre392 But don't you see? That was the point all along! Just as Melisande was everything Peter desired in a woman, so was Danielle for Sir Orrin. Her father told her of Orrin's exploits and she confessed him being a role model for her. As the wolf said, "It's too good to be true!" That was the whole idea, I think, as is with any fantasy. : )

  • @balrog13571 She defeated the elves. Similar to Aragh, who defeated the Sandmurks and contributed little else.

  • @howl9430

Yeah but that's hardly anything really. It was a misunderstanding and after easily clearing that up, she was just there. Aragh saved them from a real danger and fought against the other things too and despite being defeated he at least put up a fight against the giant and Bryagh. She just fired one arrow and missed! How do you miss THAT especially when you fired a bunch of them againt the elves and all of those shots hit?!

  • @jameskortright

I suppose you have a point there.

  • @balrog13571 I geuss she could have served as getting everyone free of the elves at first only thing i could think of

  • @balrog13571 you picked science alright ;)

  • Sir Orrin Neville-Smythe's sword- See that evil dragon? FUCK HIM AND HIS FIRE RESISTANT BODY!

  • @vampyricremnent I think that maybe he punctured the hydrogen sacs? Fireproof skin wouldn't help with a catastrophic internal combustion.

  • I think this cartoon should be made into a movie, and why not?

  • lol, yep, teaching Peter in Gorbash's body

  • Who was the voice of Bryaugh?

  • @67nairb James Gregory.. also does Smrgol

  • @tfre3927 Smrgol was the voice of the old good dragon who was teaching Peter or Gorbash how dragon's breath fire. Right?

  • 2:40

Blade with whom I have lived,

Blade with whom I now die,

Serve Right and Justice one last time,

Seek one last heart of evil,

Still one last life of pain...

    Cut well, old firend...

    Then... farewell

  • @kefka989 My personal ethem

  • @kefka989 I agree! I remember when I first saw this cartoon when I was 10 years old! It shocked me but in a awesome and wondrous way that awakened my love and passion for fantasy and magical stories. Watching it now also amazes me at how poetic the dialogues are and it does not attempt to mask or tone down (for kids) the harshness and cruelty that sems from a battle between good and evil.

  • @kefka989 Is it "still" or "steal one last life of pain"?

  • @kefka989 the creed of one badass knight

  • I stand ready to replace Sir Orrin and await my fate, evil WILL not prevail!

  • Got to love Bryagh's lines:

    - Puny scum of Carolinus! Prepare to die!

    - Praying? ha ha ha... now... DIE.

  • @tfre3927 His voice is legend. 80 Marlboro and a bottle of whisky a day to get that voice man

  • how can you not love this movie! Been so long.

  • You can't seem to link directly to Youtube anymore, but do a search for The Hobbit Part 8, then go to about 55 seconds in for a similarly epic speech.

Both of these moview were made by Rankin & Bass -- IMO the greatest 'small time' animation studio EVER. They made Flight of Dragons, they made The Hobbit and The Return of the King, they made The Last Unicorn, and they made all those great Christmas claymation films.

Epic knight, epic scene, epic movie, and an epic company.

  • Fucking epic!!!!!

  • Fucking epic!!!!!

  • Sir Orrin a true hero and knight of honor.

  • I have loved this movie since I was a sprog. Awesome stuff :-)

  • Redirected here from 4chan, Will definately look this movie up. Thank you.

  • @QuantumWalker13 It's so good dude.. classic..

  • Blade with whom I have lived, blade with whom now I die.

Serve right and justice one last time.

Seek one last heart of evil, still one last life of pain.

Cut well old friend, and then farewell.

  • True paladin

  • Epic oath indeed, he's a true paladin.

  • Epic oath. Epic movie.

  • @iovandrake It puts a chill down my spine every time - I remember when I was very young thinking he was putting a spell of his own kind on that sword.. epic!
