The concept you were trying to get at is that we have about the same carbon as we've always had. You can also say that for Mercury. By your reasoning it is okay to have high levels of Mercury in our drinking water because, the total amount "is the same"? And again, look up solar activity (not just sun spots) over the last 1,150 years. Since the 70s solar activity has leveled off, while carbon rises along with the temperature.

Buzzkill, you need to look up solar activity, solar activity has a much greater impact upon our planet's climate than greenhouse gasses. In cases where solar activity has been high, carbon did follow temperature.

But if you look at the medievil warm period, you'll see solar activity was high, compare that with greenhouse gasses, they were constant. Little Ice age? Low solar activity, constant carbon. Current? Rise in solar activity that leveled off in the 70's, record high carbon levels.

As temperature increases because of the additional human made CO2, many natural processes turn from CO2 sinks into CO2 *sources*. @Buzzkillskeptic: It is a fact that certain gases (known as greenhouse gases) are responsible for naturally keeping our planet warm. Without them Earth's surface would be an average of 33°C colder (10 second google search). One of those gases is CO2. Historically, the natural cycle has involved periods of increased/decreased volcanism. The varying level of volcanic gases left the planet warmer or cooler. Humans have created a CONSTANT volcano effect by pumping CO2 into the atmosphere nonstop.

Human emissions of CO2 are now estimated to be 26.4 Gt per year.

The consumption of terrestrial vegetation by animals and by microbes (rotting, in other words) emits about 220 Gt per year.

So 200 gigatonnes less than just rotting matter.

The natural balance has been held on this planet for millions of years. CO2 is released into the atmosphere and is then absorbed by vegetation and oceans. Machines are NOT part of the natural balance. By developing technology that produces these gases, humans have pushed the limits of natural carbon absorbtion. If the planet was well balanced before machines, how can unnatural carbon production of any amount not throw the planet out of balance?
