  • im doing cad 1 this year and i hope to become a architect

  • Can you give some advice for someone who is taking an associate degree program for architecture and needs help on starting out?

  • lol it's not that hard, you don't need any schooling, I am going to prove it like I did with my first company.

  • This probably going to sound very immature in spite ofbthe mature topic but...... I can't help myself. Procreating. Lol.

  • Could you explain to me the difference between Architecture, Civil Engineering and Structural Engineering? I don't know what to choose.

  • Hearing, all that you said, I wonder who would ever want to be an architect, except masochistic persona, craving to be walked over their spine by some spoiled self-interested-rich people, who want to invest in to another huge-Babylon-cube, to sell some space. That being said, i don't think that there is any creativity, and real passion in that monetary-hypocritical-dominant society that you are pro paging with that smirk- smile on your face.By the way investor-banker?Crazy slaves....

  • Like this comment below if being an architect inspired you to be one instead of your other requested choice.

  • I wanted to be footballer but I then notice that I have a hard chance of it happening and then had a think, Every one seems to comment me on my art work and saying "What are you going to be went your older, an artist?" or "You should be an architect when your older" as well as my grand father being an architect he also comments on my work as well as my parents so then I decided that one day I might decide to become one. (Hint) I am 12yrs old next year.

  • You said working harder twice o-o

  • @zachizpro

he said; making changes 3 or 4 times XD

  • This series made me even more sure I wanted to stay in my major when I was just considering switching, even with all the obstacles. Thanks. (:

  • i was so sleepy and now is 3:00 am,i saw this serial in fb ,i started watching, i coudnt stop watching it,it so wonderful i watched and write to read them again and again,...thnx for ut kindness MR DOUG PATT...:*

  • Why does he always lean towards the camera???

  • real honest ending to the series

  • O didnt think they would let me say twin towets

  • Whats your take on TwTo

  • i didn't even want to be an architect but your video series was completely inspiring. I can see many ways how it can be related to all careers and have learned a lot about my profession as a filmmaker just by watching your videos

  • So I want to be an architect and I'm ready for the challenge. Let's roll.

  • Going bald! Lol just kidding, im a med student, im not switching, i just find architecture intresting

  • Only one word in this video scared me: debt. Introduction to architecture is the first class of freshman year for me tomorrow, at Clemson University. Here goes nothing.

  • lets say I'm on my way :D 90 % sounds like my habits

  • o.0 yes i want to be an ARCHITECT .....!!!! but i really need to make soome changes

  • haha not getting paid well? i know a lady who got 1,000 dollars on a plan she did in four hours with a pen she just scaned it and printed it and got 1,000 dollars just in four hours XD

  • Think of all the stuff you'll need to do to become a president.

  • My dad's an architect, and this is deja vu.

  • The only way to survive it all is to really LOVE architecture. For many architects their job is the only true relationship they have! You just can't give so much energy to something rational, it has to be a passion :) Even after working 30 days in a row, 12 hours a day, I couldn't imagine doing anything else in the whole world :D

  • wow he just made being an architect seem alot harder then what I know maybe it's just his personal experience.

  • @minimonkeyplay Actually this is true. Even as student now I am experiencing some of these things.

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!! Sounds almost like a full-grown chip on the shoulder... I SAID, 'ALMOST.' ;D

  • I heard the word CHANGE a lot.. And clients.

  • Doug, around how much money does an architect like you make? I love architecture and I'm not doing it for the money. It's just that I've heard the pay is minimal compared to the work put in. After hearing you in this video, being an architect seems quite hard and stressful, so i was just wondering if i will regret becoming an architect because I am working so hard and making so little, if they do make so little.... Thanks :)

  • I am in a big dilemma and I need help! My dream is to become an architect however my uncle(my uncle is an architect) told me that I should better become a civil engineer because according to him they can do more things and it is easier for them to find a job in other words my uncle believes that here in greece a c.e can do the same things with an arch and more.. i cant believe this!whats your opinion?

  • I think I'm up to the "losing sleep" stage

  • i had allot of bad habits when i was in college.. one of them is always being late.. and i successfully eliminated that but i still smoke cigars

  • so true

  • Making Changes! :))

  • Must view Toll Brothers Video.....Go to Youtube...........Looking for Schmucks

  • Actually I love to be an architect and your videos really made me laugh a LOT! you're soooooo right!, maybe we'll never be rich, and no client will ever be the best, and I have to admit that I have NO social life besides a drawing table or proyects but I love my career and I love your videos 'cause you make me think about the "underground architect issues" jajajaja "the making of". Thanks for your dedication.

  • I am 15 years old, and being an architect has been my dream. These videos have helped a lot. Thank you. And yes, I thought architects made good money too.?

  • Also the professors that think we have all the time in the world and have no social life :/

  • I'm in my third semester or architecture. Beore I started college I knew architects worked like hell and made little money but I still decided to go for it, now it's really starting to scare me. Honestly, how bad is it...?

  • do architects really NEED to change their handwriting??

oh, and personal question: do you think all that was worth it in the end? :)

  • @JinkawaKanon actually yes its really necessary to mention all those things because its part of studying and being an architect. And no, you don't have to change your handwriting. You only have to change it to identify floor plans, sections, elevations and all other type of drawings that's all.

  • Hearing all of this makes me want to be an Architect even more.

  • @kinkjob92 exactly!! I feel the same!! ^^

  • Making changes... always!!

  • I thought they made good money

  • @niallm1999 yeah me to O.o & ive started school already :(

  • getting what you always wanted .... not really

  • I SO WANT TO BE AN ARCITECT!!!!!!!!

  • I'm confused ....

  • tua madre

  • I think you forgot about making changes!!!

    hahahaha

  • im 12 years old and i want to be a archetect

  • i want to be an architect but i don't wanna be like this ... what should i suppose to do.. hmmmm...

  • I so want to be an architect........... Until now...... This is very informing but you just scared me out of being an architect

  • @Tnkrbell10123 Lol did you expect it to be easy?

  • @KalleMickelborg i knew that it would be challenging but i didnt think it would be that crazy...it was a lot to take in.... but i still want to be an architect... i am just glad that i know what to expect so now i will be prapared!!!

  • @Tnkrbell10123 soo true.. I'm scared now... I still want to be an architect

  • @Tnkrbell10123 you just have to live with all that stuff, and you will get used to alot of it.. its just what needs to happen and it isnt easy

  • @Tnkrbell10123 The majority of what he just said is in most (design) careers. To design is to problem solve. To problem solve is to find a solution. Sometimes a solution does not exist. This leads to the shaping of the problem.

Dont be scared of doing what you love. As a graphic designer, we too run into the same intricacy.

  • Im pretty sure you hit all the aspects of the architecture world that no one but us really experiences! and much more...you never stop learning in that world, mainly about people. Drawing a house is easy compared to them!

  • This guy is a boner!

  • i wanna puke...

  • Thanx for the video! It´s very inspiring, the storytelling and the way of filming it. Keep up the good work!

  • fantastic video

    haha priceless

Now i want to study architecture even more as retarded as it sounds.

Thanks for the fantastic series of videos you made

  • i almost wanted to kill myself just listening to this. how many different ways did u say losing sleep and making changes?

  • Thanks for the video.

  • very very nice serie .its a master piece well done

  • architect to become or to not become...!

  • I'm satisfied with this series, you hit everything that even the best architects do. Great job.

  • on their own for themselves or part as a team for a already running business?

    thank you for listening

  • @MBautista2 sounds like you're in good shape.

they can work as a team or by themselves. some firms in the US are as large as 1400 employees.

  • hello, I am currently doing my gcse's. which I'm predicted: A in maths and product design (technology). A* in physics, chemistry and IT. and a B in English. I will hopefully be taking maths, physics chemistry and product design at a-level.

I have always wanted to become an architect and I like everything about it.

I was wondering if anyone could help me because; firstly do you think I have the right grades to become an architect? and secondly I know this may sound silly but do architects work

  • @MBautista2 I am currently an Architecture student, studying in London. Those grades look great. Architecture schools are not really fussy with what A-levels you take. They do prefer Art ( I took Fine Art). I decided just recently that I want to drop out because the course is not for me and I am not passionate about it. Your really have to love Architecture in order to study it. It hard work, physically and mentally straining. The best Architecture schools in the UK ask for A/B for A-levels.

  • This should have been part I?

  • Hmmmmm... Sounds like life in the real world to me.

  • LOL that is so true!! It sounds like you are trying to steer everyone away from becoming one.......

  • Okay, here's the deal.

I'm 15, and I'm taking my GCSE's soon. This year even. I'm expected to get a C in physics, a B/A in maths and a B/A in art. I want the job of an architect to be mine, but I'm not sure what A-levels to take.

I will take fine art and english (maybe 2 English's) but not maths and physics. Would I Still be able to continue as an architect if I do this?

  • Some truths from personal experience,

    1) Pursuing a career in Architecture WILL EAT your life and YOU WILL sacrifice sleep, reading, gaming, friends, and a part of your soul or fail utterly.

    2) Your work will be respected, appreciated, and even demanded to the point where mother fucking clients will constantly call you wondering if you've finished their mother fucking designs.

    3) You will know true boredom when you are called upon to design 6 floor plans for one area.

    4)

  • @TheBaconlaser 4.???

  • GRACIAS!

  • "..., making changes, ..., making changes, ..., making changes, ...."

I think that there's a theme rolling here.

  • Ok guys someone help me out.

I'm in high school and not doing really good with my grades....I'm in the 10th grade

I can't really draw really good but I'm going to go to art lessons. And I just like the thought of what an architect I and dose I just don't know if I understand it all the way threw.

When I go to college what are the architect classes going to teach me? I mean like are they going to teach us how to draw the buildings like an art class?

What art class should I take in my high sch

  • lol redrawin e drawing u just drew.. this is brilliant!

  • hi everyone, i just finished school and im considering doing architecture in uni. There are a few things bothering me:

    1. is it really that bad?

    2. is it hard to make it big?

    3. is it worth the five years in uni?

    4. and is there money in it...honestly?

i know these are superficial questions but that is because they are the only ones which i cant get a straight answer for...from real architects please

any help would be great thanks:)

  • @mfasullo92 I will answer ur questions according to my very little experience here in my country, Colombia:

    1. no, it is not that bad, in fact if u like creative process it is awesome...

    2. uhmmm...it is a little hard to be a star in the bussiness but if u can make it, wow, awesome!...

    3. YES in capitals!!!

    4. There is a lot of money in it, but u need to be surrounded by the right people... u need contacts!

Hope it helps u a litlle

  • Great seven part series and other hotwtoarchitect videos. I'm now a fan. My son is an architect in NYC, teaches architecture at NYIT and is now on sabbatical doing a Masters in Sustainability. I went through the process with him for the past 10 years and can appreciate everything you have presented. You're right on the mark. Having seen my own son morph from teenage kid to professional architect, I can say here that it is not just a job, it is a passion and way of life. Great job Doug!

  • Architecture is about learning how to / your wrists without killing yourself *cough* I mean learning how to live with all the things he mentioned above & of course making changes! :D

  • I laughed so hard. Loved these! Hopefully the US economy will be hiring in 4 years ...

  • thanx so much for this video. for the whole series. it really resumes our profession very well. and it helps sooo much to hear it told so truthfully; that all of us architects are in the same boat, facing the same challenges... keep them inspiring you! :)

  • If this video discourages you, you probably weren't architect material in the first place.

As a matter of fact, no other career is easier.

    Also... MAKING CHANGES!

  • @AdvancedK9 every career is difficult and beautiful and important in it's own way. luckily (for me), the challenges and possibilities architecture expose us to, just make me love it more :) it's just the matter of choosing the difficulties that satisfy YOUR masochistic needs ;) lol

    and also... MAKING CHANGES! ;)

  • Comment removed

  • Making changes.... Losing sleep XD

  • Cool! and beautifull concluding... I mite finish architecture and still be in da profession i was planning on droping for the past year! thanks Doug!

  • making changes

  • How deep! Kept it real!

  • It's just about everything..

  • making changes, making changes, making changes.....

  • Hehe...

Only an architect can can fully understand an architect IMO

    80% frustration

    20% of better things :)))))

    20 definetly overcomes the 80 , eventhough it's a smaller number lol.

  • screw this, lousy pay, huge hours, you would have to be nearly fanatical about designing buildings to subject yourself to tremendous debt and crappy lifestyle.

I'm off to become an investment banker.

  • @ma3rui4si1

    why do you say that

  • @ps2604 It's a long story, but I'll try to say it quickly. Everybody says how great architecture is. I even didn't know about architecture when I decided to go at that school. Now that I have a little experience, and almost all architecture has left me cold.

Architecture is a 'thing' that respond to people 'needs' less or more, but we humans we make such a fuss because of it. Look at the history of art and architecture and you will see its direction towards nihilism and chaos.

  • @ps2604 All we know to do is to built larger and larger, look at the skyscrapers that were built, and other big buildings. There are so many tower of Babel nowadays. Look at the materials: concrete, metal, glass, and other structure modified materials, that are not friendly to the environment. Look with patience and understand the ideas behind today's architecture and put them in comparison with faith. All I say is: humanity is wrong oriented towards itself.

  • @ps2604 And architecture is the barometer of peoples level of ignorance and unawareness.

At the school of architecture (everywhere) we learn to make such an theatrical architecture. There is no concern for people and human being. I saw that. All we care is the level of economic development, the level of science (which is a limited and false knowledge), inflation, the global warm (which is a lie, by the way), pride, and all sins you can enumerate.

We make architecture because we sinned.

  • @ps2604 And we sin making architecture, because we don't know how it's right.

I cannot believe that nowadays architecture is the real architecture. This is my belief.

Sorry about my swear word I did before.

I think that this is enough.

  • hi doug patt i enjoy ur video but the thing is i really have lots of question

  • wait , what is this 4-days exam ??

  • Haha. You missed out being made redundant.

  • How big is speaking in front of people in architecture?

  • Everything he said is completely true. For you young guys out there, thinking about studying architecture, do your research before, please. Maybe architecture is not what you think it is. I think this video should be presented to every young person thinking about profession as an architect, really.

  • Thank you

  • I think I'll just stick to fashion design... which is pretty much the same damn thing -_- , except no math.

  • lol wolwerine figure behind him :D :D :D

  • wow, this should be posted 7 years ago.

  • why didnt you make this video 6 years ago before i started architecture...so sad, yet so true.

  • well, i'm studying to became an architect.. this video really describes what i experience at univercity, what i worry about, how sleepless i get sometimes (many times!), what my dreams are for the future and how my life will probably be! i'm so excited!! even though i'll experience some difficulties (maybe lots of them), i'm more than sure that this is what i was born to do!

    .......HORREYY SLEEPLESS ARCHITECTS!

PS these videos are really gooood!

  • Thank you for the effort man. That was helpful.

  • I'm still in high school and I wanna be an architect, I'm pretty sure I'm the only one I know who wants to be an architect and people ask me why, with all the hard work, exams ect. But I just tell the because I enjoy it. None of your videos have put me off it (apart from the handwriting bit because mine is terrible;) I go in to year 10 in a few months and wondered what subjects I need to pick in year 11, can someone help me? Ty in advance.

  • @hjct95 Art, most certainly. A design based subject (Resistant materials, graphics) are the only subjects you can really take at GCSE. I'm the same as you, but i'm in year 13. I'm taking art, psychology, product design and maths.

    Hope that helps

  • "Getting what you really want.NOT REALLY!"

  • thanks, really nice lessons they are really helpful thank you.

  • your series is really inspiring and very informative. Yeah, it makes me want to be an architect more and feel good about it. The series made me realize how architecture is a struggle but also an adventure. :) please continue making more videos. :)

  • i would like to thank you for the videos "So you want to be an architect" you definetly opened my eyes, and i realise now that its not as easy as i thougth. I have a passion for architecture but im not sure that this job is for me.

    thanks a lot!!!

  • "DEBT."

    hahaha

  • redrawing the drawings you just drew! lmao

  • @stover81291 sounds familiar!

  • so truth

  • i dont want to be a architect anymore... lol

  • i need your help!!!!.im finishing high school and i do wanna stdy architecture but i dont realy know which are the best architecture school to aply to.what do you recomend me.....

ohh and to what college/university did you go to? i hope you see this message cause i need help....

  • Making changes 1 day nbefore construction starts xD

  • thank you very much :)

  • thanks for your information.

  • ur so intelligent

  • fail, I am watching this after getting into architecture school... I like money, so I think I just made a major mistake. Well, architects are better of than accountants and other engineers.

  • Do architects ever use computers to design?

  • @snowlover71 most of the time.

  • Hahahahah well this is just great. Long story short you really have to love what you do otherwise you will probably commit suicide. In all reality, I am a senior going into my freshman year of college. I plan on transsferring to ut next year. I don't really like math or physics...can I still be an architect? Should I be one? Is there anyway to tell if you want to do this or if you are just a philosophical kid who likes to draw and likes the title of architect instead of doctor?

  • @2HalfMoonBay go to howtoarchitect and join The Architect's Academy. It's free and should answer some of your questions.

  • I have a question , can you give me a link or something to join the The Architect's Academy , because there are many and I don`t realy know wich one to pick , thanks ;)

  • @2HalfMoonBay Just try it man. I'm sure you'll love architecture so much, that you will want to learn math and physics in order to improve your designs. And if you can make it into UT Architecture, then you should, an probably will, stick to it.

  • @2HalfMoonBay

I'm scared myself I took an apptitude test architect didn't fall in one of the top job positions like how I wanted it to be. I'm in my freshman year in university as well and I took prereqs for the Bachelors in Environmental Design in UBC.. sorry for babbling on.. I just want to say that I feel what you're trying to say.. I don't want to be like everyone else and do science, but I'm afraid to pursue architecture. I think that if you feel like you have potential and drive go for .

  • @2HalfMoonBay it lol

  • You forgot getting married and having children.

  • @ANNOMMX

    yup, he did

  • how to be an architect?

YA HAVE TO SUCK THE COCK OF DIFFICULTY

AND HOPE THINGS GOOD FALL INTO PLACE

    FUUUUUUCCCCCCKKKKKK!!!!!!

  • wolverin,yeeeeee.

the only thing that cane in mind to me,a future architect.

    thank you

  • thanks for this mr.patt. im in second year highschool and i dream to become an architect when i graduate. the reasons why is that i want to travel the world and create new things no one has done. with your videos, you inspire me to follow my dream.

  • this guys is so depressed :P

  • gee.... is there any good thing about being an architect? it seems you dont get paid enough for the stuff you have to do

  • I just begun studying it, and I know I'm just playing architecture in my drawings and models, yet I understand the pluri-making changes, loosing sleep, redrawing the drawings you just drew.

You could add the meaning of deadline, and the surprising shortage of the night.

  • this almost certainly should have been the FIRST video in the series.

  • Thank U!!

    Best of luck :))

  • depressingly inspiring

  • i dont know why most of you are saying thanks for the discouragement, this vid seems to have alot of positives and negatives. i think its realistic , its a serious profession, it looks fun, or atleast something id be willing to do. "making changes" lol

  • "wondering why your not an investment banker" -- priceless

  • Im giving a lot of thought to becoming both a structural and landscape architect since I've worked in construction as soon as I graduated high school. With only an associate's degree in graphic design, I knew from the start that both construction and design fascinated me. Do you think that being both a landscape and structural architect have its benefits when one is a general contractor? Or is it best to stick to a specific field to master its proficiency?

  • im supposed to be an architect now for 2 years, but since i finished studies we hit crisis and there is no job for me n now its 2 years im sitting home playing ps3 !!! so now i totally forgot everything, when ever i have chance of sending CVs i freak out, cause i think i don't remember anything now, i think im a lazy girl who doesn't wanna work, n i stick to that idea , but sometimes i think im waste of air n time n money my dad spent on me.

  • I'm an architecture student at Penn State and I find that everything you've talked about in school is dead on. I am still in love with the art of being an architect, but I am glad you are brutally honest.

  • well said and done :) thanks

  • heartbreak! lol I'm having second thoughts now xD

I need to rethink things. thx for the vid.. I need to face reality now lol

  • some on plz answer ?? because im 12 and i really ant to knowcause it like my dream but i lso wanna know how much an archetect maks plz answer anyone =D

  • @tiffanybritro theres a ton of sights that answers this question for you, but dont freak out youre only 12 youll probably change what you want to do multiple times like i did. just d what you like.
