  • I'm surprised to see so many comments on this video from religious people using the song to damn atheism. I'd always understood the song to be saying that laughing at God is actually okay. I mean a lyric like "when the crazies say He hates us and they get so red in the head" is pretty clear-cut in its damnation of the zealously religious. I think the song's trying to tell us all to relax about God and though people turn to him in desperate times, to live lives of constant desperation is a waste.

  • HAhahahahahahha. Fucking true......(and deep...)

  • i don't believe in god . i only believe in the power of Glitter.

  • @llll148 Faggot :P

  • @fraglepuss You know, I really don't think Regina would condone insults like that. Take it somewhere else.

  • @VWpanic1 Regina owns youtube O.o sorry i had no idea mu apologies

  • hate to be THAT GUY. but my uncle was in a war. 2 of them actually. he was shot a total of 3 times. at no point during any of it did he believe or even think of god, except once, to damn him for the deaths of his friends. true shit, bruv.

  • There are no words <3 just..... <3 x

  • See THIS is what music is. Art. <3

Something I think many people have forgotten nowadays.

  • I so rarely think about God these days, but this song came on my mp3 player the other day- and it's so poignant. When it comes to crunchtime- my thoughts are always 'Please, let me live', or 'Please, make this feeling stop', or 'Please, take their pain away'.... Who am I talking to if not God? Whoever they are anyway.....

  • And THIS, ladies and gentlemen, is SONG WRITING. God bless Regina Spektor.

  • anyone sending hate things obviously know nothing about music. get a life don't try to steal other people's. xx

  • I used to laugh at God, but then I took an arrow to the knee.

  • 168 dislikes? NICE TRY RICHARD DAWKINS

  • Actually it's not a good argument for the deity to say that people in their desperation will turn to anything.

  • @txnygotw It's not an argument for the existence of anything. It's saying belief in God is something foundational to people, that laughing at belief in God is ultimately futile. If belief in God is false, it can't be made to go away by irreverent humour. That's my take, anyway.

  • to be honest, i prefer to enjoy the song without the whole 'g-d this' / 'g-d that' crap. I'm an anti-theist that happens to love EVERY SINGLE THING ABOUT THIS SONG. please people, don't ruin it with your dogmatic crap.

  • @Noddy93 Dogmatic crap? It's her song, her lyrics, her life and her opinon and you chose to listen to it. Dont like it? go away..

  • @Arpiri Wow, what? I'm thinking you missed the point of my comment... entirely.

  • @Noddy93 I dont think so. You like this musically but you dont like the religous lyrical content, right?

  • @Arpiri i think the lyrics are great. when i said that i "love every single thing about this song" i meant it. then i wrote "please people, don't ruin it with your dogmatic crap" as a plea to commentators to stop interjecting their religiosity into a wonderful song.

  • у русских вечно так покуда гром не грянет не крестится мужик почтения к богу нет ;)

  • God! Beautiful.

  • It's a reverse metaphor.

The song really is about english muffins.

  • But God can be funny

At a cocktail party when listening to a good God-themed joke, or

Or when the crazies say He hates us

And they get so red in the head you think they’re ‘bout to choke

    ^haha "crazies"

  • On the real tho i was trying to find this song for like a year already. Im so glad i found it . Good song

  • I used to like reading all the positive comments on Regina's videos but then I came here... It's a shame too because this song is very wonderful.

  • @itsSurge Is life all rainbows and butterflies? Sometimes we need something deep to appreciate life and all its colours. :]

  • Well, even if you CAN interpret it in anyway, the real meaning is that the artist gives to it. I don't know if Regina gave an interview about the song, but you should look after it.

For me the song is all about respect of belief, of how people need the idea of God (it being true or false) sometimes and people must respect that ALL the time (even at cocktail parties), because it's not funny in certain situations, even you might need it. So respect, just that. ^^

  • i like God

  • what is a god

  • I'm not laughing at God in those situations. However, I still don't believe!

  • I would love a sky and cloud colored piano.

  • Regina Spektor and Radio Pulp my favorite artist!

  • I think this is about God. God is always there!

  • A real lady, a lady who doesnt need to show boobs in order to have millions of people loving her, for what she is, a singer, not a common pop, slut.

  • I don't really think that this song is about God ... It's about someone or something which is there if we don't see a way out. We just never think about bad things when we're fine - and I'm happy that it's how it is ... Imagine how sad our life would be if we had to care ... Imagine you had to think about death while your wife gave birth to your son. It's just nice to know that there is something we can trust in worst situations ;)

  • this is random but if you think about it 9 11 was fucking scary i was only 7 or 8 i think.

  • @1691christian cool

  • Noone's laughing with God while arguing semantics over a song.

  • You're all wrong. Regina Spektor was born into a Jewish family (thereby is Jewish in the racial sense) but has stated herself that she's agnostic. Tools.

  • @Neeneeavailable We're tools? How nice of you!

  • Nice of Harry Potter to lend Regina his invisibility cloak for her video.

    :)

  • "There's no such thing as an atheist in a fox hole"

  • one of my favourites songs!

  • Basically, if your plane is crashing, God doesn't seem like a joke. You can spend your whole life not believing in a higher power and even ridiculing it, but if you're moments from death and you know it, I think everyone would wonder.

  • @ChandlerLove well, i had a pounding as i rolled an old Cherokee on hard frozen ground: in my 5 seconds or whatever, many complex realizations of regret and futility occurred, and zero sense or worry of matters of god (when you realize death odds are high, u realize what is important and to me, existence of god is an esoteric issue irrelevant to human emotion and death.

  • true song.

  • know one laughs at god when they have diarrhea and only one sheet of toilet paper left..

  • @XxGrimx LOL sooo true

  • @XxGrimx I like the joke, but please check your grammer next time. haha :) x

  • @MaK9123 ....tits or gtfo.

  • @XxGrimx Stay off of my 4chan.

    Love, Moot & Pals

  • @XxGrimx Maybe not....but im laughing at you right now.

  • @XxGrimx God laughs when people use "Know one" instead of "No One".

  • @XxGrimx

You, sir or madam, have just completely and literally shit on a gorgeous song and very relevant problem with our society. It's people like you that make our society shit.

  • @thestevieharmon nah. you have to admit that was pretty good. And its in the same vien as the song actually. Its not like he said no one's laughing at god when you wake up with no memory and a burning ass hole

  • @thestevieharmon I love you tooooooo

  • I'm a guy and i enjoy this song...now i wont have any friends -.-

  • AWARENESS IS KEY TO CHANGE, CHECK OUT THE OFFICIAL "LAUGHING" MUSIC VIDEO BY Sticky Badaboonchii (A REGINA SPEKTOR SAMPLE) THANKS!!

  • I laugh at God all the time... lol.

  • this is one of those videos I want to see HQ. oh well

  • regina spektor is a goddess on earth. i am in awe of her. my complete and utter role model

  • <3

  • what did you record this with a potato?

  • @cjoshskull25 potatoes gonna potate

  • @incarnation316

There is nothing wrong with believing in a god. In this "great informational age" people do need something to help them through life. It's not like she's saying there's no moon or something, just that people go through rough times and need that "mass delusion" to help them through it. Don't judge people for believing in a greater force.

  • @discombobulated46 i wasn't judging anyone, i don't need to. reality makes a believer's beliefs and opinions irrelevant. i was just expressing how i don't like being a minority in this regard. although i implied moral negativity towards the state of believing i only meant to imply my disdain towards the state of being few in the masses of many believers. also i meant ignorance literally, as in if one would just seek out the scientific nature of our reality the answers you seek would be found

  • STFU, and just listen!

  • bah this video strongly implying she believes in a god knocks her down a few pegs for me, /sigh. reminding once again that even in this great informational age there is no shortage of ignorance. one can only hope that someday we'll all look back at 'god' as the last 'the earth is flat' mass delusion

  • @incarnation316

Pfffffff. Thanks for your opinion, but..........You're just miffed that an smart and talented artist knows who God is. People like her are more in touch with their soul and the metaphysical realities that the quaint scientific method can't hope to explain.

  • @incarnation316

there'll always be new delusions to replace the old ones - they just get subtler and more esoteric...though that in itself is an improvement cos subtle delusions are harder to instrumentalize than crude ones. They're harder to see and break down though, unfortunately.

  • @incarnation316 Wow! What a statement...totally proving your own point about ignorance (and, dare we add prejudice--they go hand in hand as you aptly show) being alive and well!

  • @abovousqueadmal I'm not sure I understand what you're trying to say. I'm not prejudice. In fact my previous post implies that any prejudices are irrelevant. That's the point I was trying to make when I mentioned ignorance, our prejudices, if you will, towards reality simply don't matter or have any effect. Which is why I find it so distasteful that theists and atheists are so quick to defend unsubstantiated beliefs, and thus my /sigh about people blindly expressing allegiance towards beliefs.

  • @incarnation316 But the claim that belief in God is equivalent to blind allegiance is an ignorant claim. No one who has read anything of Augustine, Boethius, Aquinas, Bonaventure, Buber, Pieper, Geach, MacIntyre, Giussani, Flew, etc, etc, etc, etc, could equate deism or theism with blind belief or an ignorant point of view...hence my suggestion that such a claim is itself ignorant, and prejudice insofar as being a judgement without substance.

  • @incarnation316 You got absolutely raped.

  • Maybe some don't laugh at god because we don't laugh at fairy tales. They don't deserve that much credit. It would be like laughing at zeus or the easter bunny. Today the word "god" simply means "the unexplained".

  • My interpretation is that she's bemoaning how the institution of religion and its followers have isolated people from faith, by making seem it like a pathetic joke. "No one laughs at God when they need him, only because some fools have ruined his message." This coming from an atheist.. Look at it outside of what you believe..

  • regina i love you and your music!!! i just covered your song samson! please come check it out :)

  • I am atheist a girl that I really like walks away from me like I have HIV when she found out that I am...

  • @nipols Had the same thing happen to me. It really doesn't feel good that someone would judge you so much based on one opinion, but if she holds religion that close to her it never would have worked out anyways. That's about the only conclusion I can accept from that situation...

  • @rhcp211 we could have make smart and good looking kids as you know mixing genes is better for us human beings... I am Filipino-Japanese with some Chinese descent shes Mexican but looks white but it doesn't matter we both like each other... too bad she chose her religion over me but I respect her decision.. she could have been my wife.. I miss her so much. I never like a girl this much. I usually just want to get laid sometimes but I love her. ;/

  • she is beautiful; this song is beautiful, and it's a beautiful message

  • Regina-ception :) with that picture fram

  • I just discovered her! I love her!

  • woahhhhh this video's..... cool :)

and Regina Spektor = amazing! <3

  • shes a JEW!! there's no way that this could be an atheist song. look up to google ,search the lyrics.

  • As an avowed atheist, I can still respect & appreciate this song.

  • what she means is that people only talk to god in their worst situation and when you are having a good time god is the last thing in mind... so we shouldnt be like that and talk to god all the time cuz he is always there for us.

  • @Tre30ri I think she's not saying that God is always there for us and we need to talk him all the time. I think it's more of a "God is a part of the human mind that can help us in her time of need, but other than that we exploit the idea of him" kind of thing. But I personally don't celebrate the existence of God which might affect my idea of the song. I just don't think it's theistic.

  • @discombobulated46 Yeahhh I definitely agree with you. Nicely put :)

  • @Tre30ri No, that's not what the song means.

  • @Tre30ri Only that there is no reason to think that and you are most likely deluded.

  • @Tre30ri It's your point of view. I agree for the first part.

But for the second, the opposite is also true. God isn't here, doesn't even exist and so you don't need to talk to him.

  • @lolo8818 I'm sorry, who are you to say whether God does or does not exist?

  • @justwrite94 Me ? I'm nobody.

Every person has proper feeling about this. I just reply to "Tre30ri" who said one vision. I just said that another point of view exist. I didn't judge his point point of view, you know, I'm open minded. I just demonstrate my sentence, maybe my words was too harsh.

Some people believe in God and others don't, I respect both of them for their convictions. it's just that both of them have the tendancy to forgot the orther.

  • There is no reason to believe in any god... but I feel something inside me... what is that feeling? A god, an attachment to the universe and everything in it or what? Does this answer lie in something we have yet to figure out about the brain or is it from another source? Can anyone relate to this?

  • @Diablo112687 my religion kind of sums up what you just said

  • @Diablo112687 That sounds like pantheism.

  • This song is deep.

  • Why would I laugh at something that doesn't exist?

  • @1337Tempest you're not witty

  • Wonderful :) Wonderful :) Marvelous

  • Close your mouths about the religion or no religion hullabaloo, and open up your ears! Just listen to the pretty lady's pretty everything:)

  • Hey, if you have any spare time, would you mind checking out my channel?:3 I have a singing cover of this song, and have barely any views on it. Please help a little dreamer out?:D

  • This is more than a song...Thank u Regina for making me feel like this... :)

  • Agreed, she isn't referring to a Christian god (or any other god) in particular, personally I see her as meaning "no one feels powerful when they are in a situation they cannot control"

  • People Would be most likely to Say "God dame you dame it all to hell" when those situations arise.

  • I love Regina Spektor. she is the poor man's Tori Amos.

  • stop arguing you're missing the song!!!!!!! Isn't she beautiful? and so is a her music... irrespective of what meaning you take from it.

  • oh and I'm also not laughing at God... at all ^_^

  • OMGod :) This song is AWSOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM, can;t belive I found something so good just like that today, Jesus! I love you people _.o./

  • you guys are really stupid. Why would she be continually mentioning God, over and over and over if the song had NOTHING to do with him? Really? Also no one cares if you believe in God or not. This is a good song meant for idiots like you.

  • Are you sure this song isn't about God? Because it sort of sounds like it's about God.

For what it's worth, I'm an atheist. But there are times when I wish I weren't...

  • @johnula1 Atheist or not, everyone cries for his help where is nothing else left to do. I considered myself atheist too, than I realised I secretly behind my own back believe that there is something more than this world. I dont go to church, I dont pray, I am just being honest with myself :).

  • @Ferbbie if you are an atheist, then no you do not cry for help from some higher power because you know it isn't there. I suspect most people would be better classed as agnostic if they need to be classed at all.

  • @thehuddler If you read my comment more closely, you will see that I said "considered". I am not an atheist anymore. A very cruel experience made me be honest with myself. As I said I dont go to church, I dont pray, I just know there is something out there.

  • i love her dress! ^_^

  • God has a scens of humor.

  • No one tempts fate in a hospital

No one tempts fate in a war

    No one's tempting fate

When they're starving or freezing or so very poor

    No one tempts fate

When the doctor calls after some routine tests

    No one's tempting fate

When it's gotten real late and their kid's not back from the party yet

BecauseAlexWasBored pretty much summed it up for me.

  • whats deeper than God?

  • no one's laughing at god

  • 240p. We meet again.

  • @F3ARMUFFS :)) Our archenemy is back once again..

  • @F3ARMUFFS Overused youtube comment,we meet again.

  • ...how come on any sort of song that has any religious/anti religious undertones people have to ruin it by fighting about who's opinion is right and who's is wrong? the reason these artists write their songs is to make a point. to say their opinion. not to have people arguing a(so far)unwinnable arguement. im not saying to stop expressing your opinion, just that you shouldnt attack other peoples.especially if you are too much of a coward to say it in the real world.enjoy the music for what it is

  • Oh my gosh.. I heard this song once... It was on a music channel.. And I couldn't remember ANY of the lyrics.. And I just clicked on this video. Today's going to be an amazing day. :'D

  • 240p, we meet again...

  • @limpalimonaad I've heard that comment too many times.

  • Point number two: Is it a good thing if you convince the other side that they're incorrect? A quote from my ATHEIST friend. "I love religion. Here is a group that tries to get people to live like good citizens and work towards the betterment of society. When they're about to die, they're happy because they truly believe that they are going to a better place. Who cares if they're wrong or right? Their beliefs are making them both happy people and better people. So, what's so bad about that?"

  • You're all trying to convince one another of being irrational and illogical. Do you want to know what is truly irrational and illogical? Arguing about whether God is real. People have debated for centuries about the existence of God, and you all find it rational that you can convince someone else that your beliefs are true in a matter of days? And the sad thing is, I'm probably irrational for posting this, because you're all so full of yourselves that none of you will stop arguing either.

  • @brandnertim You just kinda stated my beliefs... I think that as long as a person believes something with all their heart, they aren't wrong. I just don't like when people exploit their beliefs -.-

  • I know God exists when I listen to Regina's music. As simple as that.

  • *whom

  • @oldschoolnewshit @MrJaredandnicole @sedwarg and other persons trying to proof their point with rational arguments, quotes and inductive argumentations. Don't.

Believing isn't arrogance. I believe in the people who I love, I believe in the power of music and maybe in God. Maybe I believe. Believing is being vulnerable.

Do you spoil the feelings you have for someone with logical evidence? I don't believe so...

  • I like how this video got a religious/philisophical debate going on, when even Regina herself says she's not entirely sure of it all. In one of her interviews, she talked about how she was just thinking about the whole concept of god a lot which inspired a lot of her god/religion-based songs. She said she's not sure what she thinks of it all. Oh, haha, and look that video is on the suggested videos to my right. Check it out. :)

  • i just question god , for all the hurtand pain he provides us with , people can only take so much for so long , . why does he do that ?

  • I wonder if she still reads the comments.

  • Hmmm...Trojan condom ad for a song with minor religious tones. Regina's right, God does have a sense of humor!

  • But God can be funny

At a cocktail party when listening to a good God-themed joke, or

Or when the crazies say He hates us

And they get so red in the head you think they’re ‘bout to choke

    God can be funny,

When told he’ll give you money if you just pray the right way

And when presented like a genie who does magic like Houdini

Or grants wishes like Jiminy Cricket and Santa Claus

    God can be so hilarious

  • Please SHUT UP about God vs. Non-God.

    It's driving me crazy.

It has NO relationship to the song, whatsoever.

What she means is "No one tempts fate in the worst of situations."

So, now that that's cleared up,

    LISTEN TO THE SONG!!!

  • @MySillySadie Is that what she told you?

  • @MySillySadie im fairly sure she is talking about God since she did mention God at least 30 times in the song? and i dont even like god....or do i?

  • @jimmyb888

    37 times. ^^

  • @MySillySadie

Are you dumb? All this song is about is God.

  • @TheKenTerry Just because she says God doesn't necessarily mean it's about God directly. It seems deeper that. It seems to have noting to do with God vs. Godless, but about how people aren't willing to risk tempting fate, and God sorta symbolizes this "fate". Fate is a higher being that can choose whether we live or die. We don't know if God exists so when you're in trouble, you secretly hope He is, and that He'll save you. Just my interpretation.

  • @MySillySadie NO RELATIONSHIP TO THE SONG? mmmm...you should watch one interview that made her at 2008 i think...well...it's not ok that the people fights for God...you are right...but the song is written about a world where nobody wants to believe in anything...and that's sad

  • @MySillySadie Well God determines your fate in those situations, so technically it is about God..

  • @MySillySadie Oh sadie *hat's off* "(-^-)".. Thank you.

  • @MySillySadie It depends how you interpret the song.

I think its an atheist anthem, but thats just me.

People can pull whatever they want out of this song. Thats the beauty of art.

  • @RBkidd510 It's definitely not an Atheist Anthem if you look up the lyrics. The song is about the hypocrisy of people who laugh at god when times are fun, but cry out to him when times are harsh.

  • @RBkidd510 i thought it was more of a neutral stand. we laugh at God jokes, thus making Him funny, but no one laughs at Him (even atheists) when under threatening conditions. I think it's a mild criticism on both theists and atheists, without actually criticizing them. she just said facts without really having a claim.

  • No one's laughing at God when praying youtube commenters learn to spell.

  • the most beautiful songs come in 240P

  • Thumbs up if you can't understand her but it's beautiful anyway

  • Stop this stupid "God exists - doesn't exist" discussion, it has nothing to do with the song, the video or even life itself. Just respect each other.

  • mi parte favorita:

    god can be funny

when told he’ll give you money if you just pray the right way

and when presented like a genie who does magic like Houdini

or grants wishes like Jiminy Cricket and Santa Claus

    god can be so hilarious
