im pretty sure this song is just saying how people don't laugh in the face of fate, not necessarily god. but when things go swell, there's no reason at all not to laugh so fate is pretty damn funny.
So, the last line seems to be implying that God is responsible for the pain and misery in the world, and it is a joke to him. In order to laugh in the hospital or during or a war, you're joining the Big Guy, because he's already having a swell time.
@zyxek actually shes saying during times like war or famine, everybodys praying or begging to god or some higher power after ignoring or mocking such an entity previously..smh
You can laugh at God at a cocktail party, but if you're in deep shit, you can only laugh with him. To me, that implies he's already laughing. Kind of a twist ending that everyone seems to have missed.
@zyxek or if you read that whole line" At a cocktail party when listening to a good God themed joke" theyre laughing at a joke, a religious themed joke, and not all jokes necessarily have to be negative... not really a twist. but agree to disagree
@tbreen22 Yes. They were laughing at a joke. That's exactly what she said in the lyrics. How stupid do you think I am? That doesn't change the argument.
Have you given any thought to the line and title "Laughing With," and what it means in context? Because you haven't addressed what I said at all. It seems like you're just being dismissive my comments (which would be OK if you weren't replying.)
@zyxek I simply said I dont think Regina Spektor would right a song mocking god, I dont know how stupid you are to be honest, but seeing your reply you DO sound a bit like an asshole. I said agree to disagree and you still want to argue... thats an asshole in my book.
@tbreen22 See, the "agree to disagree" thing is a cop-out, and you slipped it into a comment implying that I lack some very basic reading skills. Did you expect me to not reply?
Now you have finally stated something that explains your view: "I simply said I don't think Regina would right a song mocking god." You actually didn't say that earlier, but it makes enough sense that I understand where you're coming from, and I did not earlier.
@zyxek I think the "we're all laughing with God" line might be poking at the people who, when making fun of someone, say they are not laughing "at" them, but "with" them. When everyone knows that the target of the mockery isn't laughing.
I love this song...and she's got me. I don't believe in God, I make fun of 'Him' with friends, but as soon as my mom is in the hospital or my brother gets into an accident, or something goes wrong with my sister's pregnancy, you can bet your life that I'm going to be on my hands and knees begging to some randomness in the sky to MAKE them live. We're all hypocrits.
The funny thing is this song is about people like @TheHejda who say God isn't real, then the moment they need his help in scary times all the sudden they want God despite laughing at him and doubting him before they get into those tough situations.
I'm surprised to see so many comments on this video from religious people using the song to damn atheism. I'd always understood the song to be saying that laughing at God is actually okay. I mean a lyric like "when the crazies say He hates us and they get so red in the head" is pretty clear-cut in its damnation of the zealously religious. I think the song's trying to tell us all to relax about God and though people turn to him in desperate times, to live lives of constant desperation is a waste.
@HalloumiJaiDean Hey, just wanted to clarify something that is often misunderstood. The "crazies" r the extreme radical people who choose to hate instead of love ppl with different views. The real Christians are those ppl who do not condemn & try to live in the footsteps of Jesus - try to love unconditionally. God is super complex & is so often misunderstood,it's easy to laugh at Him at times when we think we can do it alone, but not so easy wen we're in need or know sum1 in need. Just my 2c!
@LittleRedTent That's a very true point. Although, I find it interesting that so many people have attached a Christian sentiment to the song. Regina Spektor is Jewish after all... Racially, that is. I don't even think she believes in organised religion - just spirituality.
hate to be THAT GUY. but my uncle was in a war. 2 of them actually. he was shot a total of 3 times. at no point during any of it did he believe or even think of god, except once, to damn him for the deaths of his friends. true shit, bruv.
I so rarely think about God these days, but this song came on my mp3 player the other day- and it's so poignant. When it comes to crunchtime- my thoughts are always 'Please, let me live', or 'Please, make this feeling stop', or 'Please, take their pain away'.... Who am I talking to if not God? Whoever they are anyway.....
@txnygotw It's not an argument for the existence of anything. It's saying belief in God is something foundational to people, that laughing at belief in God is ultimately futile. If belief in God is false, it can't be made to go away by irreverent humour. That's my take, anyway.
If you actually read this I give you thanks already.

@Arpiri i think the lyrics are great. when i said that i "love every single thing about this song" i meant it. then i wrote "please people, don't ruin it with your dogmatic crap" as a plea to commentators to stop interjecting their religiosity into a wonderful song.
Well, even if you CAN interpret it in anyway, the real meaning is that the artist gives to it. I don't know if Regina gave an interview about the song, but you should look after it.
For me the song is all about respect of belief, of how people need the idea of God (it being true or false) sometimes and people must respect that ALL the time (even at cocktail parties), because it's not funny in certain situations, even you might need it. So respect, just that. ^^
I don't really think that this song is about God ... It's about someone or something which is there if we don't see a way out. We just never think about bad things when we're fine - and I'm happy that it's how it is ... Imagine how sad our life would be if we had to care ... Imagine you had to think about death while your wife gave birth to your son. It's just nice to know that there is something we can trust in worst situations ;)
You're all wrong. Regina Spektor was born into a Jewish family (thereby is Jewish in the racial sense) but has stated herself that she's agnostic. Tools.
Basically, if your plane is crashing, God doesn't seem like a joke. You can spend your whole life not believing in a higher power and even ridiculing it, but if you're moments from death and you know it, I think everyone would wonder.
@ChandlerLove well, i had a pounding as i rolled an old Cherokee on hard frozen ground: in my 5 seconds or whatever, many complex realizations of regret and futility occurred, and zero sense or worry of matters of god (when you realize death odds are high, u realize what is important and to me, existence of god is an esoteric issue irrelevant to human emotion and death.
You, sir or madam, have just completely and literally shit on a gorgeous song and very relevant problem with our society. It's people like you that make our society shit.
@thestevieharmon nah. you have to admit that was pretty good. And its in the same vien as the song actually. Its not like he said no one's laughing at god when you wake up with no memory and a burning ass hole
There is nothing wrong with believing in a god. In this "great informational age" people do need something to help them through life. It's not like she's saying there's no moon or something, just that people go through rough times and need that "mass delusion" to help them through it. Don't judge people for believing in a greater force.
@discombobulated46 i wasn't judging anyone, i don't need to. reality makes a believer's beliefs and opinions irrelevant. i was just expressing how i don't like being a minority in this regard. although i implied moral negativity towards the state of believing i only meant to imply my disdain towards the state of being few in the masses of many believers. also i meant ignorance literally, as in if one would just seek out the scientific nature of our reality the answers you seek would be found
bah this video strongly implying she believes in a god knocks her down a few pegs for me, /sigh. reminding once again that even in this great informational age there is no shortage of ignorance. one can only hope that someday we'll all look back at 'god' as the last 'the earth is flat' mass delusion
Pfffffff. Thanks for your opinion, but..........You're just miffed that an smart and talented artist knows who God is. People like her are more in touch with their soul and the metaphysical realities that the quaint scientific method can't hope to explain.
there'll always be new delusions to replace the old ones - they just get subtler and more esoteric...though that in itself is an improvement cos subtle delusions are harder to instrumentalize than crude ones. They're harder to see and break down though, unfortunately.
@incarnation316 Wow! What a statement...totally proving your own point about ignorance (and, dare we add prejudice--they go hand in hand as you aptly show) being alive and well!
@abovousqueadmal I'm not sure I understand what you're trying to say. I'm not prejudice. In fact my previous post implies that any prejudices are irrelevant. That's the point I was trying to make when I mentioned ignorance, our prejudices, if you will, towards reality simply don't matter or have any effect. Which is why I find it so distasteful that theists and atheists are so quick to defend unsubstantiated beliefs, and thus my /sigh about people blindly expressing allegiance towards beliefs.
@incarnation316 But the claim that belief in God is equivalent to blind allegiance is an ignorant claim. No one who has read anything of Augustine, Boethius, Aquinas, Bonaventure, Buber, Pieper, Geach, MacIntyre, Giussani, Flew, etc, etc, etc, etc, could equate deism or theism with blind belief or an ignorant point of view...hence my suggestion that such a claim is itself ignorant, and prejudice insofar as being a judgement without substance.
Maybe some don't laugh at god because we don't laugh at fairy tales. They don't deserve that much credit. It would be like laughing at zeus or the easter bunny. Today the word "god" simply means "the unexplained".
My interpretation is that she's bemoaning how the institution of religion and its followers have isolated people from faith, by making seem it like a pathetic joke. "No one laughs at God when they need him, only because some fools have ruined his message." This coming from an atheist.. Look at it outside of what you believe..
@nipols Had the same thing happen to me. It really doesn't feel good that someone would judge you so much based on one opinion, but if she holds religion that close to her it never would have worked out anyways. That's about the only conclusion I can accept from that situation...
@rhcp211 we could have make smart and good looking kids as you know mixing genes is better for us human beings... I am Filipino-Japanese with some Chinese descent shes Mexican but looks white but it doesn't matter we both like each other... too bad she chose her religion over me but I respect her decision.. she could have been my wife.. I miss her so much. I never like a girl this much. I usually just want to get laid sometimes but I love her. ;/
what she means is that people only talk to god in their worst situation and when you are having a good time god is the last thing in mind... so we shouldnt be like that and talk to god all the time cuz he is always there for us.
@Tre30ri I think she's not saying that God is always there for us and we need to talk him all the time. I think it's more of a "God is a part of the human mind that can help us in her time of need, but other than that we exploit the idea of him" kind of thing. But I personally don't celebrate the existence of God which might affect my idea of the song. I just don't think it's theistic.
Every person has proper feeling about this. I just reply to "Tre30ri" who said one vision. I just said that another point of view exist. I didn't judge his point point of view, you know, I'm open minded. I just demonstrate my sentence, maybe my words was too harsh.
Some people believe in God and others don't, I respect both of them for their convictions. it's just that both of them have the tendancy to forgot the orther.
There is no reason to believe in any god... but I feel something inside me... what is that feeling? A god, an attachment to the universe and everything in it or what? Does this answer lie in something we have yet to figure out about the brain or is it from another source? Can anyone relate to this?
Hey, if you have any spare time, would you mind checking out my channel?:3 I have a singing cover of this song, and have barely any views on it. Please help a little dreamer out?:D
Agreed, she isn't referring to a Christian god (or any other god) in particular, personally I see her as meaning "no one feels powerful when they are in a situation they cannot control"
you guys are really stupid. Why would she be continually mentioning God, over and over and over if the song had NOTHING to do with him? Really? Also no one cares if you believe in God or not. This is a good song meant for idiots like you.

@johnula1 Atheist or not, everyone cries for his help where is nothing else left to do. I considered myself atheist too, than I realised I secretly behind my own back believe that there is something more than this world. I dont go to church, I dont pray, I am just being honest with myself :).
@Ferbbie if you are an atheist, then no you do not cry for help from some higher power because you know it isn't there. I suspect most people would be better classed as agnostic if they need to be classed at all.
@thehuddler If you read my comment more closely, you will see that I said "considered". I am not an atheist anymore. A very cruel experience made me be honest with myself. As I said I dont go to church, I dont pray, I just know there is something out there.
I think she's just talking about the absence of humor or joy in situations like these. Because they're special to YOU, sacred like God is to other people. It's a metaphor, obviously. Just plain an simple "it's not funny when it's you, and you're hurting. And you feel hopeless."
and you're laughing 'with' God, as in, we're all in it together.

There is nothing wrong with believing in a god. In this "great informational age" people do need something to help them through life. It's not like she's saying there's no moon or something, just that people go through rough times and need that "mass delusion" to help them through it. Don't judge people for believing in a greater force.
discombobulated46 1 month ago
@discombobulated46 i wasn't judging anyone, i don't need to. reality makes a believer's beliefs and opinions irrelevant. i was just expressing how i don't like being a minority in this regard. although i implied moral negativity towards the state of believing i only meant to imply my disdain towards the state of being few in the masses of many believers. also i meant ignorance literally, as in if one would just seek out the scientific nature of our reality the answers you seek would be found

RobertaIBetti 1 month ago 2
bah this video strongly implying she believes in a god knocks her down a few pegs for me, /sigh. reminding once again that even in this great informational age there is no shortage of ignorance. one can only hope that someday we'll all look back at 'god' as the last 'the earth is flat' mass delusion
incarnation316 1 month ago
@incarnation316
Pfffffff. Thanks for your opinion, but..........You're just miffed that an smart and talented artist knows who God is. People like her are more in touch with their soul and the metaphysical realities that the quaint scientific method can't hope to explain.
yewutube 1 month ago 2
@incarnation316
there'll always be new delusions to replace the old ones - they just get subtler and more esoteric...though that in itself is an improvement cos subtle delusions are harder to instrumentalize than crude ones. They're harder to see and break down though, unfortunately.
Gidwan 1 month ago
@incarnation316 Wow! What a statement...totally proving your own point about ignorance (and, dare we add prejudice--they go hand in hand as you aptly show) being alive and well!
abovousqueadmal 1 month ago
@abovousqueadmal I'm not sure I understand what you're trying to say. I'm not prejudice. In fact my previous post implies that any prejudices are irrelevant. That's the point I was trying to make when I mentioned ignorance, our prejudices, if you will, towards reality simply don't matter or have any effect. Which is why I find it so distasteful that theists and atheists are so quick to defend unsubstantiated beliefs, and thus my /sigh about people blindly expressing allegiance towards beliefs.
incarnation316 1 month ago
@incarnation316 But the claim that belief in God is equivalent to blind allegiance is an ignorant claim. No one who has read anything of Augustine, Boethius, Aquinas, Bonaventure, Buber, Pieper, Geach, MacIntyre, Giussani, Flew, etc, etc, etc, etc, could equate deism or theism with blind belief or an ignorant point of view...hence my suggestion that such a claim is itself ignorant, and prejudice insofar as being a judgement without substance.
abovousqueadmal 1 month ago
@incarnation316 You got absolutely raped.

Maybe some don't laugh at god because we don't laugh at fairy tales. They don't deserve that much credit. It would be like laughing at zeus or the easter bunny. Today the word "god" simply means "the unexplained".
chuckwagon1645 1 month ago
My interpretation is that she's bemoaning how the institution of religion and its followers have isolated people from faith, by making seem it like a pathetic joke. "No one laughs at God when they need him, only because some fools have ruined his message." This coming from an atheist.. Look at it outside of what you believe..

@nipols Had the same thing happen to me. It really doesn't feel good that someone would judge you so much based on one opinion, but if she holds religion that close to her it never would have worked out anyways. That's about the only conclusion I can accept from that situation...

what she means is that people only talk to god in their worst situation and when you are having a good time god is the last thing in mind... so we shouldnt be like that and talk to god all the time cuz he is always there for us.
Tre30ri 1 month ago 66
@Tre30ri I think she's not saying that God is always there for us and we need to talk him all the time. I think it's more of a "God is a part of the human mind that can help us in her time of need, but other than that we exploit the idea of him" kind of thing. But I personally don't celebrate the existence of God which might affect my idea of the song. I just don't think it's theistic.

@Tre30ri Only that there is no reason to think that and you are most likely deluded.
Diablo112687 1 month ago
@Tre30ri It's your point of view. I agree for the first part.
But for the second, the opposite is also true. God isn't here, doesn't even exist and so you don't need to talk to him.

@lolo8818 I'm sorry, who are you to say whether God does or does not exist?
justwrite94 1 month ago
@justwrite94 Me ? I'm nobody.
Every person has proper feeling about this. I just reply to "Tre30ri" who said one vision. I just said that another point of view exist. I didn't judge his point point of view, you know, I'm open minded. I just demonstrate my sentence, maybe my words was too harsh.
Some people believe in God and others don't, I respect both of them for their convictions. it's just that both of them have the tendancy to forgot the orther.
lolo8818 1 month ago
There is no reason to believe in any god... but I feel something inside me... what is that feeling? A god, an attachment to the universe and everything in it or what? Does this answer lie in something we have yet to figure out about the brain or is it from another source? Can anyone relate to this?

you guys are really stupid. Why would she be continually mentioning God, over and over and over if the song had NOTHING to do with him? Really? Also no one cares if you believe in God or not. This is a good song meant for idiots like you.

Are you sure this song isn't about God? Because it sort of sounds like it's about God.
For what it's worth, I'm an atheist. But there are times when I wish I weren't...
johnula1 2 months ago 3
@johnula1 Atheist or not, everyone cries for his help where is nothing else left to do. I considered myself atheist too, than I realised I secretly behind my own back believe that there is something more than this world. I dont go to church, I dont pray, I am just being honest with myself :).
Ferbbie 2 months ago
@Ferbbie if you are an atheist, then no you do not cry for help from some higher power because you know it isn't there. I suspect most people would be better classed as agnostic if they need to be classed at all.
thehuddler 1 month ago
@thehuddler If you read my comment more closely, you will see that I said "considered". I am not an atheist anymore. A very cruel experience made me be honest with myself. As I said I dont go to church, I dont pray, I just know there is something out there.

I think she's just talking about the absence of humor or joy in situations like these. Because they're special to YOU, sacred like God is to other people. It's a metaphor, obviously. Just plain an simple "it's not funny when it's you, and you're hurting. And you feel hopeless."
and you're laughing 'with' God, as in, we're all in it together.

No one tempts fate in a hospital
No one tempts fate in a war
No one's tempting fate
When they're starving or freezing or so very poor
No one tempts fate
When the doctor calls after some routine tests
No one's tempting fate
When it's gotten real late and their kid's not back from the party yet
