He forgot to mention that it had a cop 440 ci motor, cop tires, cop suspension, cop brakes and it was made before caytillitic converters so it will run fine on regular gas.
Haha cool commercial, I have a '73 Plymouth Fury III hardtop coupe and it's a beast!! Very rare car apparently, never seen one in person before I saw my baby!
Thanks for posting this commercial! I always liked the looks of the 72, and I still use one as a daily driver. It's a mean looking old thing, and there aren't many left on the road. It still carries a certain air of authority in modern traffic, possibly a residual effect of all the police car imagery!
Nowadays if U.S or Canadain cops show up its a Ford P.I or a chev Impala or a Dodge Charger. I have a 1/43 model of an RCMP 72 Plymouth Fury its a White Rose model done for North west police products. Its painted all black with the 2 front doors in white and has the red Federal Beacon Ray on the roof.
If you read a Police Car History book you'll find that the Plymouth Fury and the Dodge Polara were the Best Cop cars of all time. No other handled as good and no other was as fast. The Dodge Polara and Plymouth Fury were Cousins. The only difference were the bodies. Both had Big Blocks with over 350 Horse.
The first car I ever bought was a one-owner '72 Fury wagon with a 360 V-8 that I paid $750 for in '77. It had around 100k miles on it, and back then it was rare for a car to last that long without a tranny or engine rebuild. I put another 10k or so miles on it during the two years I had it before selling it to my supervisor at work. I never had a bit of trouble with it (good thing - I was just a broke kid) but he had it for only about a month when it blew a freeze plug. I laughed. Good car.
The transmissions used in Chrysler products back then were some of the best ever built by any manufacturer. The 727 Torqueflyte transmissions rarely had anything go wrong unless you did something stupid with them. About the only thing that goes wrong with them is the reverse after 20 years of use. The 904 Torqueflyte was not quite as strong but was usually alright behind a 318, a 360 was a little too much for them.
Yeah, the 360 seemed like a good engine, much stronger than the 318's I test drove. In fact, that's basically what sold the car to me, besides the price - it didn't have a 318. And now that you mention it, my reverse gear did go out right before I sold it in '79. I think I must have blocked it out of my mind. That was the main reason I sold it, because I didn't have the money to fix the tranny and constantly having to make sure I didn't get into any place I'd have to back out of was getting old.
Cool, I never saw that commercial before.. I think the Creekline P.D. used to run those.. there used to be what was left of one out behind Rocko's Garage.. The engine was gone out of it, but I bet that 440 still lives on, somewhere..
When i was a kid my parents had a 72 fury, i loved that car! They had it until mid 80s solid car from memory.

@MFP1520 in Jersey most cops have chargers that replaced crown vics

@MFP1520 No! I want cops to drive Crown Vics. They're distinctive that way and easy to spot.
