Man...this was the first song I heard of "The Real Thing" and right away I was thinking, "Uh-oh. Homeboy done messed up." First, she didn't say nothin' about cookin' or eatin'. Big Girl psychology 101: if she ain't cookin', she ain't happy!
Then I listened to the lyrics, and I was like, "Homeboy musta stepped out on her with a woman who wasn't blessed with the melanin."
I boycotted BET years ago when its audience transitioned from soulful minds with authentic taste to the most opposite with self devaluing intentions . Smdh. LOVE JILL. Legendary.
DAYUMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!! Jill went deeper than the bottom of the deep blue sea on this one! Thanks for posting. I also agree with the poster who made the BET comment - I pretty much stopped watching BET YEARS ago. Thanks for posting this!
@Mademan281 miss the point. Some black women care too much for the black men who don't care for them selves. Thats sad. this songs is about what black men would do without black women. Personally its not a black thing for me. I believe in having all colors of the rainbow. The problem is a lot of black women don't care of themselves like they should cause the stuck on some sad black man that they have to care of. Black women move on..that is all --Thank you
@mellandy87 Well that maybe true to some effect and also I know what the song is talking about, all I'm sayin is that blk women don't care too much about a blk man unless he has something good, a blk mans presence alone does not interest a blk woman (not all blk are like that). I know some of us blk men may have self hate but if blk women were to disappear is it all the blk mans fault? U can't fault us all, it's a 2way street.
@Mademan281 yes but the women has a point alot of black guys take women for granted and totaly take the player thing to far, specialy when they have a child it aint good .BUT THIS SONG IS!
this is my first time hearing tis gem!! this is whatsup. @ libertarian my brother feels the same way,it saddens me also, but he's sad and ignorant and will be left behind in those beautiful black world that will soon become.
How does it make "them" feel? Probably happy. They want to breed themselves into oblivion. Blackness is not valued, and the black woman is seen as being the carrier of the "black" burden. My own brother feels this way. Sad, but true. Jill Scott is preaching to the choir with this one. You'll never hear real shit like this on BET.
@LibertarianGal2009 so deep music like this doesn't get played on BET because its now talking about bitches, hoes, dollar bills, alcohol and weed BET is suppose to represent use but makes us look so bad another form of willie lynch killing the black man.
this was really nice. i wish more brothers could get a hold of this. at times I feel like as whole they really don't care how we feel; they are afraid to even put a dark women in a video...it's really sad.
Every great vision begins with a Thinker. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.
I just went through a live "How's It Make Ya Feel" experience with someone who would do well do learn and live the words of this song. It's cool. I'll just make sure my 3 year old son never has to be on the receiving end of this confrontation from a fed-up sistah. Life is too short, and our energy is better invested pursuing Love and Peace.
Sistahs: REAL standards via REAL rap years ago are on YouTube for us to hear, so we'd never HAVE to wonder if the Brothas 'might be better off without us'.
LYTE: See I'm special, not because I'm MC Lyte, but because I'm a woman with the gift to bear life.
LATIFAH: What's going on in your mind is what I ask ya
But like Yo-Yo, you don't hear me though
There's only so much finger pointing we can do. We have to determine to demonstrate Discipline, Diligence, Self-Dedication, and Self-Definition.
I'm feelin' you Grammy2Be. I see this comment was written a year ago...my first time hearing the song...so sad; b/c it shows just how "hidden" some really great music is
thanks for the support. don't be sad. be glad that your mind was open enough to lead you here at a time where you'll hopefully be inclined to share the wealth (of knowledge, of course) :).
I'm going to give you some allowances for not meaning any offense, but if it's a CONSCIOUS sistah you seek, FYI: The term Negroid is commonly associated with outdated notions of racial typology. It's derived from Negro, which is Latin for "The N Word". I'm sure you don't want your fiance feeling like your fantasy wench now, would ya? We've certainly had more than enough of THAT!!!No harm intended, none done. Just sharing some helpful knowledge.

Honestly though I agree with this song, I think most black women don't revere black men like they used to. Nowadays it's all about self.
