I too am an admirer of the beauteous Ms Coates, but here's the problem. In this serial "Panther Girl of the Kongo" she played a feisty "she tarzan" type. She swings through the trees, dives from cliffs, swims, runs etc. She also kills a lion and a crocodile with her hunting knife alone. Yet whenever she gets into a fight with the bad guys she gets knocked out right away and just lays around looking pretty. They should have choreographed real fight scenes just like they did with the males
I agree with you on that point. I would have liked her to have engaged in some "rough-and-tumble" action, just like her male co-star, instead of getting KOed so easily.
Besides all the reasons given here, I think PC was just a damn good actress. She could play sweet & nice & be funny (Joe McDoakes) or play tough (Lois Lane) or silly stuff like serials. Why she never advanced beyond the cheap B movies is a mystery to me. Example: In the episode when it's Jimmy's birthday & she & Clark take him to see a ventriloquist, watch her in the background...
Look at her eyes as they go from Jimmy to Clark & back to Jimmy, signalling "boy is he (Jimmy) a dope to be laughing at these dumb jokes." It's a wonderful bit of schtik and very funny too. It's too bad her career never qdvanced to where her looks & talent merited. You can tell I'm a big fan & I have been since I was a kid.
Phyllis Coates sure had the right goods in the 'body & curves' dept, no doubt in the world about that. But when it came to a good-looking FACE to match, PLUS that indefinable magic called 'charisma' & 'natural attraction' .. well, I reckon that Noel Neill had it all over poor Phyllis. Noel was a 'natural' .. Phyllis always seemed a touch more 'forced' in her work by comparison. Anyway, that's only one one sole opinion. Others may well differ in theirs, as is of course their 100% entitlement.

Phyllis Coates, a favorite of mine for all the reasons you have mentioned plus I always thought she had a sexy, soft voice.
Sometimes I think an actress loves a role like Panther Girl because they have great legs and they know it and love to show them off.
