People! Don't argue what genre certain songs belong to. It doesn't matter! If someone asks what type of music it is, just say it's "Opeth type music". @ insidious420 You must be ill-informed, if you knew anything about progressive rock it started in the late 60s and this is definitely Opeth/Mikael's tribute to the past and where their progressive roots came from, and all of the wonderful bands and sounds that have influenced their music over the years. If you were observant in any way, just the album cover alone of Heritage should explain this to you. "Heritage" is great, and i think the band did great in this tribute. Famine is my favorite

It was peculiar to me 'cause before they startd playing this one I wishing to myself on them playing it, and hell, they ended up playin' it. Sounded fuckin' ethereal through and through. These guys one of many greatest live bands

Just because this is one of their numerous excursions from a song which has at least one section of heavy riffs and screamed vocals, doesn't mean it isn't metal. Out of context, it may not seem a conventional metal song, but this is progressive music after all, and in the context of the rest of the album it would make more sense as part of a metal album.

I could care less if their new album doesn't have any death vocal growls. As long as the music is dark and has a lot of twist and turns. To have each song that Opeth play sound so different from one another is a bit of a rarity in metal. Most (metal) bands (to a certain degree) sound all the same throughout their albums. But with Opeth, all songs and albums are SOO diverse from one another, which makes their music extremely memorable.

I think watershed really was.... a watershed for this band. We knew that they had all of that mellow side, as was always greatly shown, but now hes lead the way to really to fully realizing that style. Sure, we had damnation, but the new album, which will not have harsh vocals supposedly, is one that will be able to stand proudly on its own. I cant wait!!!!!
Opeth are the true gods of music. Mikael Akerfeldt knows more about music then probably most people on this earth. When I first heard about this song with its title "Throat of Winter" I immediately thought it would have death vocals on it, with such a title. I was a bit disappointed, but it's still an okay song.
I love Opeth for a ton of reasons, but I wasn't sure what some of those reasons were. I looked up what Russian Fatalism meant and the mentality behind it and it's opened my eyes to some of the things I've never understood. I had the Western mentality of Capitalism and was never enlightened about this subject. I never knew why i was so depressed and why things like Opeth would make me happy, so thank you

there's nothing commercial about this song, god of war asked opeth for an opeth song to include in the soundtrack for the album and mikael wrote a fucking fully acoustic song, i don't think it's what the game designers were expecting. but how could anyone have a problem with this? this is incredible.

@Freitzenburger I'm not usually one to jump in arguments but you say you listen to "everything" yet the bands you mentioned are either metal or rock, thats not a bit of everything, thats one or two genres. Thats nothing. Slipknot is TERRIBLE. I would HOPE a band with 9 fucking members could make good tunes but apparently not. They are the worst excuse of a heavy band, kind of like disturbed and should not be mentioned on the same page as Opeth. Who are FAAAARRR above in musical talent.

@munkierunner Well, you shouldn't compare Slipknot and Opeth, because these are completely two different genres. Progressive Metal was always kind of "elite" and it is the music that many people do not like. It is very advanced in structure. Slipknot plays simple Heavy Metal, Nu-Metal or blahblah.

Both are Metal, and heavy metal at that basically, both have growl vocals (albeit different growls a bit) and soft vocals. I understand the differences between them. Opeth are more progressive, slipknot is more straight heavy with a few soft parts. But bottom line is they are, the majority of the time, heavy bands consistently, perhaps more then not. Opeth IS far superior. In every way. You said it yourself....

True enough, it does sound a little different to what they usually do, but thats the whole idea of progressive metal isnt it? to always be new, different, exciting, beyond everybody else. and this still brings out an emotion and atmosphere, like they do in every song, which i jizz for, so just try and appreeeciate it man :D youll love it

@aexalven not even close to trash, heir apparent is a master piece start to finish. coil/the lotus eater/hex omega/ hessian peel are all great songs. porcelain heart is a pretty weak song but there are other great parts of the album that make it good.after making tons of albums of death metal im sure that as hes getting older hes becoming more interested in exploring softer territory. but yeah, theres only like 2 maybe 3 songs that are not so strong on the cd, not enough to deem it trash.

I think watershed really was.... a watershed for this band. We knew that they had all of that mellow side, as was always greatly shown, but now hes lead the way to really to fully realizing that style. Sure, we had damnation, but the new album, which will not have harsh vocals supposedly, is one that will be able to stand proudly on its own. I cant wait!!!!!

Opeth are the true gods of music. Mikael Akerfeldt knows more about music then probably most people on this earth. For him to be able to make masterpieces like this and then make an album like Deliverance, is mind blowing!. My definate alltime fav band ever and this proves why. @MetalOfAllOwns lol and he doesn't know theory at all, notes or scales. I think that theory kind of limits a lot of people. Look up Marc Okubo from Veil of Maya, he's a great guitarist and does the coolest sounding riffs and it's all non theory, and it breaks a lot of rules.

I looked up what Russian Fatalism meant and the mentality behind it and it's opened my eyes to some of the things I've never understood. there's nothing commercial about this song, god of war asked opeth for an opeth song to include in the soundtrack for the album and mikael wrote a fucking fully acoustic song, i don't think it's what the game designers were expecting. but how could anyone have a problem with this? this is incredible.
