@ninjas35 kata are a combination of moves which look like a dance, however they log hundreds of techniques desighned for self defence, this btw is not self defence- note my previosu comment about the ineffective attacks of the opponents.
ahh non practical bunkai for when attacked in a filed by a gang of mean wearing the same clothing as you all attacking in a sequence that you just happen to know, armed with only one technique which you know is coming- which an ofcourse only be used at a non effective range. lets face it i dont need kata to defeat these kind of opponents
katas are a training tool for developin g an understasnding of techniques and how to use them in self-denfense. When you understasnd how to make quick changes n directions through kata, you will know instinctively in a real fight . Kata is a foundation, as one of the 20 Shotokan precepts says: Practicing kata exactly is one thing, engaging in a real fight is another.
For those claiming this isn't related to TKD... do some research. Back in the 40s (yes that's all the older TKD is) the first Korean Art to be called TKD was from the Chung Do Kwan. The founder, Won Kook Lee, learned Shotokan while attending a university in Tokyo. So when you see the older Korean forms Pyung Ahn, Chul Gi, Pal Sek, Ship Su, Yum Bi, Ja On, etc., what you're REALLY seeing is the Korean versions of Pinan/Heian, Tekki, Bassai, Jitte, Empi, Jion, etc.
I think this is Yoshiharu Osaka performing the kata, but I'm not sure. Now he's a great Karate technician, top class JKA style kihon, but this bunkai is an absolute joke. Talk about unrealistic!!! Anyone who still accepts this nonsense needs to look up Iain Abernethy, he has a great website and a channel on here called practical kata bunkai. I come from a standard JKA backround, and a year ago I would have thought the stuff in this video was ok, but now I know SO much more it's incredible! OSU!
@Ninjas35 Well if you read my comment you'll see that I corrected myself. Won Hyo Hyung came from this Kata. Yes Tae Kwon Do is from Shotokan. Go look at the form called Won Hyo you'll see. Again Shotokan influeced Tae Kwon Do.
@thecj29 I agree. In my own personal experience. I took up Shotokan till green belt then I shifted to Tae Kwon Do. I found the transition to be very easy, and I do see the influence of the katas from Shotokan or any Karate for that matter into Tae Kwon Do's forms.
OSU, this is an example of what kata are used for, fghting multiple attackers. It's not necessarily a example of how a fight would proceed, but how to fend of multiple attackers. I studied Shotokan 30 yrs ago, and we did these kata and block strike exercises so many times I can still remember them. It's kind of a second nature thing, should you be presented with a situation, you will respond to it. Being older and wiser, I'm well aware fights wouldn't end in this way, but still have confidence.
@OSUismysecondname This is an example how Heian Nidan would work in reality. Of course, enemies won't be like this that's why katas are not for using in the reality!
@Ninjas35 Katas are not for using in the reality?! Then, what is their utility? Of course kata is for self-defence. If you train their bunkais, obviously.
I have personally come to the conclusion that there's nothing arbitrary about the art. If something doesn't seem useful, it's just because I don't understand it yet.
Any strike can be a block, any block can be a strike.
in bunkai it could not be a block, it can be interpreted in plenty of ways, e.g. with age shuto you can grab the hand of the oponent and with second block - age uke you broke that grabbed hand of the oponent.. kata is just the recipe for kihon..
@silaion first of all the raising of his hand does have a reason-to graba the oponents arm, then when you greab it you can break it with a block.you would understand the rest of your complaints too if you saw this in a tournament (team kata finals-bunkai),thats where sokme arms are really broken and each technique is vaza-the finishing technique.
This is what is called OMOTE bunkai, or obvious application. Nothing flowery, and simple to understand. Most clowns on youtube try to make shotokan bunkai so complicated, mixing it with unrealistic grappling techniques. Muay Thai is effective BECAUSE IT IS SIMPLE. So should SHOTOKAN. Take up jujitsu to understand how to grapple effectively and add it to your Shotokan training. Example: Lyoto Machida!
Why? I learnt karate years ago and i learnt the same bunkai. Do you think the bunkais whom interprets a simple punch with 100 aikido technics are better?
It's the same. Where r the throws in these bunkais, where are the kansetsu-waza & shime-waza in these bunkai? Karate has this but this guy does not show it because he thinks he knows bunkai but does not. He has learned what the Okinawans & Japanese taught the school children many years ago. They took out the harmful things hence karate-do & not karate-jutsu. Do your history boys.
Funny thing is another guy has these same exact bunkai in black and white with no sound and everyone loved those!! But with color and sound, people say it sucks.
De todos os bunkai 'de heian nidan' que vi no youtube ate agora esse é o mais correto, os outros fogem um pouco da formação do golpe.

I say it sucks in any version!! But unlike others I'll tell you why.
Techniques that end with a block?? Doesn´t make sense.
Attackers that go back?? Same as before.
Raising a hand for no purpose? If it didn't have a purpose then it would not be moving.
In few words: Has absolutely lack of common sense!!

Very simple and effective. Some people just make up some movements that dont belong to the kata, just do a search here on youtube.
Anyways, congrats ! 5 stars
