  • this might sound shallow but i'm not at all into girly men. while i'm not also into men that look like they're on steroids that act superior, i don't want to be the man in the relationship! i'm pretty girly and want a man to take the reins from time to time.

  • What about omnivorous men?

  • What ever happened to "Survival of the fittest?" Wherein the toughest male mates with the female to ensure survival of their offspring and their species.

  • @engros that hardly exists anymore ^_^ I would say, ever since we got civilized ...

  • you know what I think it is...it started out as a movie fad in which a girls totally just gush out at the fact that a guy would even reveal that he is in to "drinking tea" "enjoying poetry" all that softcore shit....the image of the macho man was totally wrecked by the "high school jock" who picked on nerds and thought it was cool to pick on em. like that, so was given the rise of the herbivore man, a man who is man enough to show he's sensitive born out of the oppression of the weak

  • And I'm all about the meat too, man!

  • This is another good video talking about the underground of Japanese (maybe moreso Tokyo) culture. Good video!!!

  • In Asia mainly Japan and Korea and closely followed by Taiwan, Hk and china young guys liked to be gorky to the western sense.but Asian guys do that to be cute not tough and it attract girls because Asian girls like guys who are cute.

  • It would be fun if I could afford to keep one just as a pet...

  • I think guys showing thier feminin side is cool, and yes its DEFINANTLY popular in jappanese culture. Personly i think its really cute, but alot of people think its wierd especialy here in the USA.

  • hhaha im sort of a girly boy..i straighten my hair and always look in the mirror and stuff..and i dont do sport or be very active..i love sweets xD but hey, you know girly guys are popular with the japanese ladies..thats why most J-Pop & J-Metal artists (Gackt, Antic Cafe, countless more) dress up as girls..japanese girls arent into masculinity :) lol

  • 0:36 lol!!!!

love the way you say:"what's the deal?"

  • Very interesting!!!! ^.^

  • honestly speaking, id prefer a 'girly guy' over a macho guy any day. maybe its because im one of those girls who grew up with guys. id rather see a girly guy acting nice, than a macho guy tryna act tough .

  • Very interesting!

I've been labeled a metrosexual before, but I take it as a compliment mostly meaning I know how to dress. No make-up though!

  • i know this is not related to your video. but i just wanted to let you know that these videos just a good and insightful as your other channel. my question is, why start a new channel. I seems like it would be twice the work?

  • I started this channelpurely for video responses...it's also a place where i can feel freer to make political statements, be angry, or talk about things that may or maynot offend others. My BusanKevin channel will always remain "politics" and "anger" free!

  • I read that too... Some Japanese guys are too feminine. I don't say it's bad. But still...

  • Look out for the monster oh wiat its worst its ..."herbivorous man" No oh dear god nooooo.....

  • hahahaa lmao funny

  • The medium between the two, I think is ideal. I hate the extremities of each.

  • I remember seeing a video of yours in which a male-female couple were wearing matching ladies clothes. If the guy wasn't obviously the woman's boyfriend/husband, I would have assumed he was gay. That guy had to be one of these 'herbivorous men.'

  • I'm a girl and prefer manly men over girly men myself. I find that a lot of asian girls as well as non-asian girls who are into japanese culture love the girly type men. I'm really into japanese culture and media but still I just can't get into girly men, they just don't attract me.

  • I wouldn't say that "girly" men are cool, but I definitely go for guys who have more lean muscle than muscular macho-men. I am just not attracted to that at all. I guess a balance of both would be the best in my opinion. But guys who are oversensitive and act like women are just annoying, I'll admit that. I don't like feeling like I'm the man in the relationship, haha. :D

  • Being thin is fine (wish I was thinner) and I agree that "biting heads off live chickens" macho is silly as well. I suppose it's the overly sensitive thing that bothers me!

  • Good topic. Funny, interesting, and informative.

  • Thanks :)

  • Yeah I guess the definition of masculinity is different is different parts of the world. In general, I do notice that asian women go after asian men who look "pretty" and not necessarily "buffed up"

  • yeah...seems to be the case!

  • I could be wrong, but it seems like Japanese boys admire other boys who are 'pretty' and they strive to be like them.

Probably because Japanese girls seem to obsess over pretty boys who get all the attention.

lol in the U.S., the norm is still masculine men and feminine women.

  • ...you say this and yet you have Jonas Brothers videos on your channel? Hardly the most masculine of men there, and yet hugely popular in the US

I also think of the trend towards emo boys in some circles, and popular bands like My Chemical Romance, Panic at the Disco and Fall Out Boy all promoting the girly-man genre. I suspect there is a generation of westerners growing up now with an appreciation for "herbivorous men" (the name surely lost something in translation?!?), but maybe I'm wrong.

  • Yeah....seems that way. "pretty" is the way to be. I couldn't be pretty if I tried......not that I would ever try!

  • Yea, I read a similar article a few weeks ago!

They made it sound like it was EXTREMLY prevelent in Japan and I though for sure all you j-vloggers would know all about it.

In my opinion this is even stupider than the whole "metero-sexual" trend.

    Ugh.

  • I just found out about this channel. I thought the only one you had was the BusanKevin channel.

Anyways, regarding this story, all I got to say is: "Drink Beer!" *does bumnumba1 impression*

  • Yeah...I have a second channel. I think I'm going to promote it a little on my BusanKevin channel since no one really knows about this one! :)

  • We call them Soushokukei-danshi. They are supposed to be tender, calm, and easy going about job or romance. People say that representative Japanese of Soushokukei-danshi is Hiro Mizushima who is actor in Japan.

  • Well, ideas of gender norms change every so often, so I'm not surprised that certain trends would emerge challenging these ideas and attempting to supplant them, or maybe less ambitiously, create new boundaries within which one can express an alternative masculinity. This alternative masculinity though can appear as approaching to the norm of femininity to those who subscribe to the current mainstream and incumbent understanding of gender norms.

Sorry, I've been writing essays all day long :S

  • I've noticed! Well put sir ;)

  • ahaha! this is too funny...wow!

  • are you a herbivorous man????

  • quite a cultural difference, eh?

we foreigners laugh at girly guys.

  • you better believe it....

I laugh at them using my best pirate voice..."har har har"!

  • i think its the fashion and style that makes them think is cool to have that stuff.

If you seen any japanese Mtv or Music videos, its usually a guy that looks like a girl pleasing the audience,i dunno why but the girls overthere like it.
