I'd like to add, that especially with first time mares, you should watch how she is reacting, she may become frighted, and step on the baby. With ours we did move the baby just enough that if she flipped she wouldn't hurt him, It works great!
Nice vid; My shetland is almost at the point where she could go into labour (in about a month's time) and i'm very excited about it :) I also heard a rumour that when it's been a very cold winter (here in Holland it was), mares tend to keep their foals in a little longer; does anyone know more about that? I've seen more mares of all sorts who kind of take two weeks extra, so to say...
what a beautiful horse =) I hope to get a mare someday ( I only have gledings, so she wouldn't get pregnant anyway). Mares seem so gentle and friendly, but I guess they all have different personalities. Nice video, really makes this process sound easy.
I would just like to thank you.

Answers to previous questions:
The mare does not control when it happens, just as a human does.
After the umbilical cord is cut, nature will take it's duty and the foal will start nursing natually.
Hopefully that answers your questions!!
Great videos btw!

I have one question? does the mother control when the foal is born or does it just happen whenever?
And what do you do with the foal when the cord has been seperated?
sorry ^^; I was just a little confused and I don;t have a horse
