Looking at IBM's old ads...I can see why most people went with something else for their home computer in 1986 (and most other years of the 1980s). Also, I have an old chair in my bedroom similar to the one the "fake charlie chaplin" is sitting in (except mine is a lovely green vinyl/off-white plastic combination)
I'm sure the kids in that ad were really jazzed to see The Cotton Club and A Passage to India.
When I was a kid, I didn't realize that that wasn't the actual Charlie Chaplin doing the IBM ads. Indeed, the first time I saw the real Chaplin, I thought he was ripping off IBM, not the other way around.
Has any group of guys, anywhere, paid that close attention to a talking head ad selling insurance?
Wow! Howie Long looks so young! And what's the deal with "Memory" as the background music?
That "100% Guaranteed...period" line really sounded familiar. Did B of A use that slogan a lot throughout the 80s? 86 seems a tad too early for me to remember a commercial (I was 2.5 years old when these aired.)
Why, exactly, is showing boat and F1 racing supposed make me want to stay a Hilton hotel? Was actually showing the business center in the hotel(s) really that much out of the question?
"We need an ad campaign for Hilton to appeal to business travelers." "So, we'll show the hotel services that cater to their needs?" "No, I'm thinking more like racing." "So...F1 cars?" "Yes! Oh, and boats too."
The baby in the United Way commercial (Howie Long's son) is now a defensive end for the St. Louis Rams. That's kind of cool to see him as a baby in a commercial.
This version of WHere You're Going It's Michelob didn't last too long. By SUmmer 1986, Michelob went to Phil Collins, Eric Clapton, Roger Daltrey, et al. for their theme music.

Is it true that Tom Cruise's Jerry McGuire character was based in part on Leigh Steinberg?

I thought VW was German, not Japanese.
kari00ws6 1 year ago
@kari00ws6 Volkswagen IS German. The Golf commercial is saying that the Japanese import cars too, and also drive VW's.

I think I remember the old KRON 4 logos, where the 4 is placed over part of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Its funny to see how far the Patriots have come since that guy made that quip. Also nice to see Brian Boitano. I grew up watching him skate.
