I used to get some looks driving around Lynchburg, Virginia, with this blaring out of my car speakers back in '76 when this came out. This has been out of print so long that whole generations have been born, grown up, and their offspring have done the same, without the privilege of ever hearing this, it's so rare.
Their first album, which this is from, is the best non-Led Zeppelin album ever recorded, with K7's sole CD a close second. This has been out of print for years.
I seen MF with Ted Nugent with Black Sabbath headlining. There was a lot of firsts, but the main two, my first concert and the firs band I seen booed off the stage...namely MF. They came back to Philly to a smaller venue and packed the place.
I got this record...so powerful and full of energy...whre are you guys now ??? you should be playing away and performing out there as a great funk/rock band.
@Tallguy4646 - I'm from Macon, GA also - I saw them at Valdosta State College in '77 - they rocked the house so much that the local police showed up to "calm" down the crowd - didn't stop us - a few were hauled away - almost started a riot!
@Wynn0612 - I was there that night, too. MF rocked Valdosta that night. Completely blew "headliner" Starbuck off the stage. Go Blazers and rock on MF.
Going to see this group on July 27, 2011 in Myrtle Beach, SC. Extremely underrated band. Have followed them since the mid 70's before they had a major record deal. Awesome band!!!! If you get chance to seeum.....GO!!!!
See Mother's Finest is one of the privillage finds...if you came across this group ...it was cause you knew GOOD MUSIC. Thanks Nate for this intro...I haven't been the same..
Anyone who digs the funk rock should definitely give my band a listen, we're very heavily funk influenced. On a side note, we're recording out debut album soon and Mother's Finest's producer is supposed to work with us. But please check out our tunes, and feel free to leave feedback!
@surfaceplaner Just saw them in Myrtle Beach, SC. Cover was $7.00 in advance for locals. Joyce Kennedy is 63 and still kicks ass. Moses Mo is an insane guitarist. Beer was a little more, but can't beat the price of admission for the most awesome show I have seen in ages!!! Glad to see they are being inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in September of 2011. Very much deserved!!!
There were two albums called "Mother's Finest." The first was in 1972 on RCA Records. The band didn't like what the producers did (added a lot of strings/horns and kind of softened the FUNK). Not sure when that contract ended, but when they got on CBS, this "new debut" album, 1976 was released. There's a song on the RCA called "It's what you do with what you got" that morphed into "Niggaz Can't Sang Rock N Roll"
I saw them at the Champaign Jam concerts ,Atlanta Rhythm Section were the headliners ,3 years in a row. They allways put on agood show. Saw them at Wild Bills in Duluth Ga. Oct.2010, They did not play this song.
I went to Central High in Harrison, Tn. with Barry Borden - BB Borden who went on to play with many more greats and is now a drummer for Marshall Tucker Band.
@AldoMorro2009 No, in fact it was instrumental in Stone Mountain GA. in getting the KKK out of town. It completely transformed a lot of my racist friends. Racist? No. Culturally transformative? Hell yes!
I was going to see them play live at the Roxy in LA ,ca.1987. Backstage,I asked them if they still played this song ,and I guess they had changed the line-up.They told me"No,we don't play that one anymore".I decided not to stay for the show....
I bought it on cd at Amazon ,com. My vinyl was worn out too!!! This song has a message, and I as a lot of other folks got the message!!!! They were and are as rock as rock can get!!!!! Loved them then abd love them now!!!! Screw the P.C. thing. Bought sick of that crap anyway.Sing it MF!!!!!! Yeah ya can sing Rock n' Roll!!!
I saw MF in Lakeland, they opened for Ted Nugent. The idiot rednecks kept giving them a hard time untill Uncle Ted came out on stage and told them to shut the hell up or he wouldn't perform. Said he picked them personally for the tour, and if the crowd didnt like it, they could get the hell out with no ticket refund. The concert kicked ass, lol.
There are two records call Mothers Finest. That was the name of their indie debut record from 1973 and their big label debut in 1976. Not sure if they are the same.
Little about the only place you will find this particular record is 1 of two places 1) garage/yard sales 2) record exchange if you have one where you live. I found along with an unopened Casablanca release of KISS ALIVE at a place called Charlemagne here in B'ham AL.............Kickin song!!!!!!!!!!!!

I played in a band in the late 70's called Chocolate Buttermilk. Six black guys/six white guys....this was one of our most requested tunes....................
Anyone on this board remember seeing this band in Myrtle Beach, SC in the mid 70's, before they had their record deal with Epic? They were smokin even way back then. Lost count of how many of their shows I have been to over the last 35 years. Awesome live show. Check out Moses Mo on Facebook. Great guitarist and good guy.
@whatsthebigfndeal So now you need to get started on tour MF album collection: Essential MF includes 'Iron Age' (1981), 'Black Radio Won't Play This Record' (1992), and 'Another Mother Further' (1978).
To rayrayholland, MF has been trying to point to people that folks have a hard time dealing with black people singing hard rock, including blacks. But then again haven't we forgotten Jimi Hendrix?
@hawkhulk What's sad is that after Jimi became a huge star, the black community (remember this was the end of the 60s) was coming down on him for being "too white." That's when he started adding more funk and working with Billy Cox and Buddy Miles. That same black community ignored how much of his material came from The Blues!
@Belexes THANK GOD!!! FINALLY YOU KNOW THEY WOULD NOT PUT THIS CUT ON THE "GREATEST HITS RECORDING. NOT POLITICALLY CORRECT! SINCE WHEN DID A PIECE OF BAD ASS MUSIC BECOME UNCOOL???? I AM SURE THAT JOYCE, WIZARD AND THE REST OF THE BAND GOT ONE HELL OF KICK OUT THAT!! YOU DO KNOW THAT JOYCE IS LIVING BACK IN THE ATLANTA METRO AREA?
I am gettin chills listening to this! Used to go see them LIVE every chance i got in ATL growing up.......NO ONE rocks like this anymore! funky-rock at it's FINEST!
Got introduced tot hsi thru a swiss exchange student in late 1980 - this is awesome stuff. Wonder why the bands these days are so unimaginative with music
I saw MF live at Sandy Creek Alabama around 1980. Right in front of the stage and my friend was screaming " I WANNA FUCK YOU, I WANNA FUCK YOU" as soon as Baby Jane came out on stage. She gave him this wide-eyed stare like, Whazzup with this crazy white boy. MF rocked!
Rock Candy has an incredible re release production company. Locate in Europe and they have re released this albumn. Just bought and it is off the hook. You get a 4000 word essay, the Wiz giving a personal interview. Photos etc... Plus two bonus live tracks of My Baby OMG!! and Fire. Ordered mind off Amazon and had it in 3 days! Totally remastered.
You won't believe the catelouge these cats have. Rock on MF!!!
OMG!...Saw them at an outdoor concert with a bunch of bands, in back woods eastern NC..in 1979...I got kicked out of the grounds cuz I was drinking a PBR....I was 15...But I didn't get kicked out till after MF played!!!!
I seen these guys in a night club in the late 70's in south carolina and got to party with them afterwards and it was great. Brings back so many memories. They brought the house down. My brother was stationed in great falls montana and he couldn't find there albums, so I had to send him some.
I seen them live in Miami at the baseball stadium in sept '76. The singer was dressed in all red. They were the opening act for Peter Frampton and Gary Wright. This concert was huge, WSHE 103.5 FM broadcast this concert live over the air. There was a video recording made of that concert that was used for the video promo's of Framptons 78 European tour. The '70s were such a great time to be alive with all the classic artists I seen live. Now so many are dead and gone, R I P to them all.
@MasterWitchDoctor hey I was there too ..... seen a lot of great concerts there do you remember the peanut toke stones they gave out at that concert........ for Jimmy Carter being President...I think
Some of the best, hard rocking, gospel, funk, and soul you'll ever hear and has been for over 30 years now. Crank it and let it ride!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
