Please post what cuts you are willing to make and where? Talk is cheap, but I belive you learned that in Lobbyist school. You say that not raising any TAX is good? We have some of the largest corporations in the world not paying anything in Federal tax, our TAX rates are the lowest in over 50yrs but you want to get this budget under control with just cuts. Why don't you speak up for the people you represent like Me, Get us out of NAFTA, GAT , WTO, bring our jobs bac...
Thank you Dan for standing for something good even when your outnumbered by masses of biased bought out bullies. How about cutting funding for ILLEGAL aliens free babies houses and food? That should save BILLIONS. Or am I "PREJUDICE" for not slaughtering my children to feed to outlaw foreigners? But that's all a drop in the bucket. A NATION THAT TURNS ITS BACK ON ITS OWN IS DOOMED TO FAILURE. . But that's all in OBAMAs plans right? WAKE UP WASHINGTON
Your newsletter provides a link to this video which says something to the effect of go here to get details of why I voted no. This says nothing more than your written statement. Once again you waste the time of the American people. Your No vote is nothing more than a Lobbyist ploy to persuade and solicit your constituents votes in the next election. You worked as a Lobbyist for the special interest for the last twelve years. Why should we believe you've stopped working for them now?
I'm pleased that you maintained a stand for sound fiscal priciples. The need for entitlement reform is obvious and long overdue. Also, I agree that reforming the tax code must be done if our economy is to achieve job-creating growth. However, I would like to know how you would reform the tax code?
I agree that, like American families have always had to do, and are now in many cases doing so with less income than previously, the US Government needs to avoid spending more than they have available. However, the unwillingness to make the very wealthy and large corporations, who have been thriving while many American families have been suffering, pay a fair share and lose unfair loopholes in the tax code is truly disgusting. In as rich a nation as ours, the poor shouldn't suffer as they do.
When Clinton left office, weren't taxes paying expenditures? As I recall, at the time Bush cut taxes he started a very expensive war. We were in serious deficit as Bush left office because the war cost more than taxes paid in. Obama inherited the largest deficit we had ever seen AND a failing economy. Now, while the very wealthy are making money (and receiving subsidies) Congress wants to reduce health, education and social security. You seem hell-bent on destroying the middle class.
@nikitamf Poor Obama. You say Bush left Obama a bad economy? What has Obama done to make it any better? Spend, spend, and spend some more. Republicans are not out to reduce health, education, and soc. sec. We just know that we can't afford all of these government programs that liberals love to create. If these things are not being funded because our spending was cut, than you may want to ask poor Obama what it being funded that is more important than these.
@patejosh86 Thank you for your comment, It shows everyone how stupid people like you are! just a little education you might what to think about ( if you are capable of) The President cannot spend anything with out the house of all these repubicans vote YES....
@JKLustig1 That's it? That all the education you have for me? The Republicans haven't been in long. Less than a year ago you might recall that the Democrats had the house.
I agree with most of what you say BUT I do not believe letting the government go bankrupt is a good idea, Yes we should gave got a better deal but I don't know how that was possible.
Thank you Senator Coats! Keep voting for the fiscal conservative and civil liberty principles our nation was founded on and you will have my vote when you are up for reelection.
Senators who did not have the backbone to stand true to fiscal conservative principles on the other hand will need replaced. Senator Coats I hope you will be eager to help teach another new Junior Senator from Indiana the Ropes in congress since your counterpart needs to be retired....
@viperjbm2 P.S. One other trailing thought, Senator Coats. I would hope that you could help foster the defense of the 10th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America. For it is very easy to see that had our nation adhered to the spirit of that amendment the biggest controversial issues the federal government faced today would not be a problem and would be confined to a state by state basis where the citizens have a greater impact on government.
Dang it Dan. I thought you would be more explanative in the video but all you did was read from your post. As Bocacharles pointed out, your no vote could have doomed the country to default. The principles for those elected to congress is not to follow idealogy, but to join for a common purpose. The purpose is take care of business for the benefit of all Americans not the select few. Did the Senate Majority leader vote against it?
I appreciate you voting NO on this bill. I am sorry it passed
One small tidbit: We did not 'divert a default.' The yearly interest due on outstanding debt is only about 1/10 of the yearly federal tax 'income.' We would not have been able to spend all that was supposed to be spent, but a default was not going to happen. I wish you would not fall for that rhetoric.
bravo!!!! well done and thank you so very much for standing on principles! I hope you will continue strong....we are praying for that for you! Additionally, sir, I hope you will begin going after EPA and FEMA for what they are doing to America. They MUST be stopped, sir. They are creating law, and that is Un CONSTITUTIONAL. Please....go after them.
@matthewcjenkins The entire "default" threat was nothing more than smoke and mirrors. There was still plenty of money coming into the treasury to pay our debt obligations -- the definition of a default! There just wasn't enough money to continue pouring money into wasteful government programs AND pay social security AND pay the debt obligations. We could have easily continued SSN payments and debt maintenance, while putting other agencies on hold - like the FAA which is currently "closed".
Senator Coats -- THANK YOU for your vote against this Budget bill. What we have now is very little in cuts, with the prospect of tax increases and simply moving deeper into debt. I think we must continue to stand strong to our belief and commitment to trim the budget, to change the way the game is played in Washington and begin working to restructure entitlement programs, including Social Security -- and I am a senior citizen. Keep up the good work!
Dan, how do you explain your vote to permit a default on our debt obligation? You didn't mention that in your explanation.
If you think it's OK to put our economy at risk over not getting the cuts you desire, then you must separate the future budget from the past spending which you were complicit in approving. Our debt obligations may not be a negotiating point in future budget discussions. Please work to make sure that doesn't happen again.
My apollogies for the comment format, my original post was from my iPhone which didn't indicate it would be truncated. I have tried to recreate what I originally typed.
Please continue to post videos and explain your viewpoints. I would love the opportunity to discuss this with you in person. I hope you can continue to represent Indiana while exemplifying some of the most important values of our great state: compassion, practicality, and fairness.
Senator Coats, while I agree that more significant reforms are needed, I am appalled that the handling of the situation by the GOP. This was a dangerous game that didn't need to be played.
Now that the self created crisis is over, please work with members of both parties to develop legislation which protects the lower and middle classes and the programs put in place to support those who can't afford to cuts in their benefits.
Reforming the tax codes is very important and protecting jobs is
... paramount. Over the last decade, the income of the wealthiest Americans has grown disproportionately to the income of the lower and middle classes. Because of this and that there is no real empirical evidence to suggest that having a wealthier upper class promotes economic growth across the board, a fair approach to solving our problems would certainly include asking these wealthy Americans to share, proportionally, in the solution. A great first step will be to let the Bush-era tax cuts...
... expire. I only ask that all Americans fairly share the burden. Our entitlement programs serve to protect the most vulnerable of Americans. If you continue to cater to the wealthiest and most influential Americans, you are doing a disservice to the majority of your constituents.
I encourage you to work towards legislation that does help balance the budget while protecting those that need it the most. Please focus on what works for all Americans, and not a utopian ideology.
