There is a story that his agent insisted he attend a few meetings with alcoholics anonymous, and he did; but claimed he wasnt there for himself but to enquire about rehab facilities and counciling for friends he considered to be in need of help. By most accounts River had a tough time admitting he had a problem at all, and he deflected further by organising and paying for friends treatments. Hard to help someone in denial i guess..

Until that happens it wont work.It is a very hard thing to accomplish and the quickest way to derail it is to not want it, to be attempting it for the wrong reasons(others). Even if his family or friends had gotten him into treatment, he would not have STAYED clean unless it was his choice.
this all makes sense to me now... if he was off drugs for two months, then started back up on them again taking the same doses he took two months prior, it would be too strong for him as his tolerance would've decreased. that makes it all the more sad, his death was very preventable even if he had continued to do drugs, but use less of them...

For what it's worth, his hair WAS in a black buzzcut around the time of his death- there's a photo of him in his coffin & he looks completely different to this.
But they at least interviewed people who actually knew him, so this isn't a complete disaster.

If he had hid his habits and held no platform about drink and drugs then that would have been another situation entirely however, he did speak out against those things, while all the time he was using them.

You're right about that! But personally, for me motives are important, why someone does something. If his reasons for hiding his habits were noble, for me he wouldn't be a hypocrite. If he had negative reasons for hiding them, then yes, I would see him as a hypocrite and dislike his character for that, though still admire his work (for example, to maintain a nice image in front of everyobdy, only so he can make more money, those would be greedy reasons and negative) But we don't really know.
