The audience are told they are not just an audience but part of the show. So while to a sane person laughing at the bullet points would be crazy. A studio audience is coached and conditioned before the show to respond with a laugh and applause no matter what. Even if he admitted something like a murder they'd still laugh and applaud.

The show itself has been around since 1993, his son was not born until what? 2003-04? He didn't even marry his wife until this year. What needs to be remembered here is that he's a public figure, a celebrity, with his own television forum. Knowing of what's clearly going to appear in the media outside of his show, he did what was probably expected of him: come clean just as it begins to blow up.
If the news hit the papers and the syndicated TV media shows and he didn't say anything about it, it would be perceived worse than as it does now. His personal issues aside, using his own show to "come out" was a good move.
