im a matt fan..love his style..gsp is a legend dont be a cock an say he aint..he is..but i love matt hughes...pickn them up runnin across the ring an slamming them..his style...il always be matt huges but show respect to gsp..knock em out an all tht shite..but no one done it like mattie for me..he actually brought me into ufc..him an frank shamrock...in his day..legends!
Im from carrollton, illinois which is very close to hillsboro illinois where matt huges grew up. My wrestling coach wrestled matt hughes in highschool and got his ass kicked. hahaha
@thesuperjooda at least Hughes never lost to Matt Serra!! If you want to be best ever you cant lose to chumps in your prime. Hughes in his prime lost to Penn, another stud but never to a chump like Serra. I like GSP and he might still earn the right to be called the greatest ww ever but he needs to do a little bit more still. Now if you reply use intelligence and not name calling lol it will make you look smarter.
matt hughes was famous or is most known for his power. he has great technique but what made him into a star was his powerful slams and thats whay he is the greatest welterweight of all time.
If Royce and Matt Fought BOTH in their prime, I think Royce would come out on top. Matts good, but Royce was so good at BJJ that he submitted guys WAY stronger than Hughes. Hughes is one of my favorite fighters but I think Royce would have taken him.
@thsdrkndheartxxx no the reason royce was so dominant was because nobody knew what he was doing. Both in their prime matt hughes would beat royce easily
I like him besides the fact he lays on his opponents the whole match and gets the decision most of the time, I'm not saying he's bad, I'm not saying he can't get submissions, I'm just saying I can't really get into his fighting style.
@SlingShotKid007 lol are retareded or some shit royce gracie is better technically , but matt hughes is stronger >>> i was tryin to point that out u dont need tell me about matt or royce cause i know more then u do .
@killyou45 lol no shit , he won alot of tournaments in which he used his technique but in this match he out powerd royce an got into a dominate position
@B9King937 fedor is in the heavy weight division 210-265 thats why hes smaller, royce an matt are the same weight, middle weight fedor had more of a challenge
@themagicaltragic the weight is 205.5-265........fedor fought guys who were above 300 pounds and still beat them.....its all in the technique not power
@B9King937 no he didnt hes heavyweight an you have to make the weights between 205-265 if not then u cant fight in the heavyweight match , an i said matt out powerd royce , to get to back mount an kept the position i never said anything about fedor ,
@themagicaltragic im using fedor as an example because you said "physical power beats technique most of the time" which is the most ridiculous thing i ever heard and fedor DID fight guys 300+ pounds they didnt stress weight classes in PRIDE and true matt hughes is stronger BUT royce alwayssss fought guys who were stronger than him and matt because he used 2 fight guys that were over 200 pounds and hughes and royce are the same weight that proves matt didnt just beat him on power
@B9King937 haha i know about both of them ur just givin me recap , but i saw all of royces fights an i saw alot of feodrs fights an fedor has a knock out punch , he has alot of physical power lol but matt out powerd royce in this one
@themagicaltragic if you seen a lot of fedors fight you would know in every single fight he was ALWAYS the smaller weaker guy. As for having a knock out punch most guys at heavyweight has knockout power. technique beats power almost everytime. It sounds like Your saying that matt only won cause he was the stronger guy even if he wasnt lets say it was dead even physically. Matt has a wrestling background hes a pure wrestler royce wouldnt have taken him down and hughes still woulda took him down
@themagicaltragic but your sayin he just powered everything in......any good BJJ guy off his back wouldnt have let that happen because matt always overpowers his guys and people defend against it using technique.
@CommandoSac Depends. Back than he was 1 of the best YEARS ago BJJ is evolving just like how mma is. Also theres a difference between regular BJJ and mma BJJ. You can be the best in BJJ competion but once you step into the ring its a whole different game your grappling can suck! cause now you gotta learn how to defend and deliver punches you gotta learn how to wrestler if you dont know that you may be out positioned just like royce was he didnt know wrestling
@ClarkRandomness thats un true cause jiu jitsu comes with over a 100 techniques an transitions to learn, wresltin has a few take downs an stances but wrestlin is mostly involve physical power .an matt has had more fights that royce so he is the better veteran lol but im just sayin lol im not startin a aguement
@themagicaltragic Royce Gracie is not the god of jiu-jistu, Mr. I Know More Than You Do. And Matt is not just a wrestler- he may not have trained jiu-jitsu with a gi on, but he knows what he's doing.
matt hughes will always be the most dominant welterweight champ.. if u look back at when he was at his prime, nobody wanted to fight him or didnt think they were rdy for hughes.. the guy used to finish fights.. unlike gsp who likes to dance in the cage and jab for 5 rounds.. its true gsp is more complete than hughes when he was at his prime but thats the way of mma.. new generation of fighters come.. but highes will always be my fave welterweigh
Matt Hughes is gonna make a come back and win the welterweight championship, just you all wait and see. Even if he does retire after his next fight! He is gonna be the next Randy Coture story!
@joman1993 Frank Trigg. That was their second fight. The first one Matt dominated, but the second was pretty damn good, with that epic finish. I suggest you check out both
Well I didn't really dig his harsh personality as he was a bit up tight but I witnessed his career from his rivalry with Carlos Newton and there's no doubting he was the first dominant champ in UFC history and was the GSP before GSP arrived on the scene, Matt Hughes is going down in history.
ya hes really good but gsp did get pay back on him!! while hughes was in his prime he won/lost to gsp and while he was in his prime he won/lost to penn! so yeah he was good and still is but not the best!! but deffinitly one of the best!!
He is a GREAT athlete and a GREATEST person ! People use the world GREAT very often but few really deserve it and MATT HUGHES is one of them ! RESPECT to one of my favourite fighters !
Only a true badass can walk out to the cage to good ol bocephus singin a country boy can survive. hughes is by far the best welterweight to step into the octagon to date. i dont beleive he will be surpassed any time soon. call me biased just cuz hes my hometown boy but just look at the stats, they back it up. hes done so much for the sport and will continue somehow.
I dont care what anyone else says, Matt Hughes is the most dominant welterweight to date. George St. Pierre is the most dominant right now, and Im a huge fan, but Ithink if Matt Hughes fought him while he was in his prime, he would beat him. Same with BJ Penn. There can be only one champion, and that Champion is, The Country Boy, Maaaaaaaatt Huuuuuuuughes
@greg6218 I like Shields a lot, but at UFC 129 Im gonna be rooting for GSP. I think hes a better overall fighter, and I like him a lot more as a person.
@wewerelegend1 Actually matt hughes even admitted gsp was the better welterweight and dana white even said gsp could be the best welterweighth ever...... and he did say that
@RyAnNoChAlLeNge I know everyone is saying that now, and I saw that at the end of the Hughes St Pierre 3 fight, where he said GSP was the better fighter. But I still believe matt hughes is the greatest welterweight in history. Thats not to say Im a HUGE GSP fan, I just like Hughes better
@wewerelegend1 TBF the first time GSP fought Matt Hughes, Hughes was in his prime. He had 6 title defenses prior to the bout. Yet he was still dominated until he caught GSP in an armbar at the end of the round. He then went on to have another succession of title defenses, which came to an abrupt end when he met a GSP, in his prime. So to say he was not in his prime when he met GSP is untrue as GSP dominated him right in the midde of his title run, suggesting GSP is the superior fighter.
@djrussell1989 He wasnt exactly dominated the first time, as he was able to take GSP down, and gain top position. GSP was winning on the feet, but Matt Hughes has never had the greatest boxing in MMA. And when GSP took his belt away, he was around 35. That is out of his prime, which was around 30-33. I think GSP has a wider skill set, and currently puts them to better use, but 5-10 years ago, I would probably bet money on Hughes
@wewerelegend1 Age doesn't really have anything to do with prime. Look at Anderson Silva who is currently mid thirties and yet is the No.1 PFP fighter. Or the best Example, The natural 'captain America'. Hughes was brilliant, however GSP in his prime would definately beat, if not dominate Matt Hughes. Even if we look at the best opponent each has faced i.e. BJ Penn GSP beat him twice while BJ beat Hughes twice. I believe Matt Hughes is a brilliant fighter and epic champion however GSP is better.
@djrussell1989 But look at Chuck Liddell and Ken/Frank Shamrock. Those guys were legends, but they all did or need to retire, they just cant/couldnt cut it. And I have to say that Im a little biased, Im just to big a Matt Hughes fan. I wish he would go train with GSP or BJ Penn more, so he could gain some of their skills
@wewerelegend1 Matt Hughes is awesome but GSP is the superior fighter. I don't think it would matter if he trained with GSP because the difference between them is genetic i.e. GSP's phenomenal athleticism. As for BJ i'm pretty sure they have trained together. I think it was in preparation for BJ vs Fitch.
@djrussell1989 Matt Hughes did train with Penn for the Penn/Fitch fight, but that was AFTER he fought him for a 3rd time. And I know GSP is better, I would just like to think Matt Hughes could somehow find a way to beat him. Oh, since you seem to know what your talking about, who do you call in the GSP/Diaz fight?
@djrussell1989 Oh, and to point out one more thing, BJ Penn is actually a better fighter than GSP, he just is worse conditioned, so he couldnt keep up with him, but skill wise, he really does have the edge over pretty much every fighter in the world
@wewerelegend1 Conditioning is an important factor in fighting though. Its like saying he is only a better fighter because he can punch harder, they are both important factors. However i don't really disagree with what you say about skill. However GSP just should always win because of his physical abilities i.e. strength, explosive power and conditioning.
@djrussell1989 And yes, that is true, but based just on skill alone, BJ is superior in grappling and striking, but not wrestling and conditioning, which is why GSP beat him
@wewerelegend1 That is probably true but like I said you need to have the physical ability to impliment your skills, they are just as important as the skills themselves, which BJ does not and thats why GSP is the better fighter.
@djrussell1989 I can agree with that, but I believe BJ Penn has the potential to be the best, and if he beats Carlos Conduit, then he will get the chance to prove it
@wewerelegend1 I think he can beat Condit but i don't believe he can beat GSP these days, he couldnt even beat Fitch, a guy GSP dominated a couple of years ago. GSP has improves tonnes since then.
@djrussell1989 I agree that GSP would definetly be the favorite, but I would never count BJ out, especially now that hes really starting to improve his game. I would love to see a BJ motivated enough to actually get in great shape, and go to war, instead of getting dominated, like last time.
@djrussell1989 I agree, but I say you can never count BJ Penn out, if he gets his cardio good, and devolps some more muscle, then the odds will definetly be evened, and GSP will have his hands full
@wewerelegend1 You can never count anyone out but BJ has had two attempts and failed, failing badly on the second one. Its not like he wasnt training and attempting to develop his cardio, muscularity and strength especially for the second fight, he just lost to the better fighter.
i've been trying to get into watching mma as my mates love it but it just doesnt do it for me. i find boxing much more exciting to watch...there anyone that sees my side and can point the direction of some vids or fighters that i might like? cheers anyway
@dasmonkeyman hey man id love to give you a list of fighters who love to just slug it out and pound ...check out ...wanderli silva , dan henderson , fedor emilinanko , gilbert yvle ,chuck liddel (maybe) , dont watch ufc they suck cuz they like to hump each other on the floor ...go get your hands on some PRIDE FC fights ...these guys fought in japan and they are all about ACTION
@MyBlackenedLungs dude i have to say a massive Thank You for pointing me towards that PRIDE FC thats mma i can get into most definitely ....is it still going?
best welterweight ever!!!! he finished his title defenses unlike a canadaian guy i know... and so what if he beat an outta primed hughes 2x.... young hughes woulda smoked him... IMO
UFC 52. The 2nd Hughes/Trigg fight. Absolutely phenomenal. To turn it around after getn low blowed, Matt Hughes is a hero. Probably my favourite fight ever, period!
@lewiskincaid1 me and my friend were grappling and he tried to put me in a triangle and i picked him like that and slammed him... first thing he said when he woke up and we showed him the video... "wow that was a lot like hughes"... great fighter one of my all time favorites... gsp is a close 2nd
agreed many people talking shit about hughes now. BUT THE DUDE IS fucken 37!!! in UFC age thats a fossil. I still think hughes is the most dominant welter weight ever lived. I respect GSP as a fighter but i want to see by the time he hits his mid 30s can he still dominate like hughes did.. my guess is not even a chance.
Yeah he is haha. Him and Gracie both. Too bad he lost to BJ but he needed a win more than Matt did so its all good. Btw anyone here play the UFC 2010 game? If so im on a good caf making website called wwwdotmma-cafdotcom. My username is BWR450. I take requests.
gsp is awesome and great, but i still consider matt hughes to be the face of the welterweight division.

best walk out song in ufc history. not just because i love the song (which i do) but because its true to him and not just another metal or rap song
lmcctd 10 months ago
I dont care what anyone else says, Matt Hughes is the most dominant welterweight to date. George St. Pierre is the most dominant right now, and Im a huge fan, but Ithink if Matt Hughes fought him while he was in his prime, he would beat him. Same with BJ Penn. There can be only one champion, and that Champion is, The Country Boy, Maaaaaaaatt Huuuuuuuughes

@TruNikkaz Thanks. Matt Hughes will never be forgotten
wewerelegend1 9 months ago
@wewerelegend1 fuck yes. hughes wouldve beat there as. but i think its sheilds time to rise with the belt hopefully
greg6218 9 months ago
@greg6218 I like Shields a lot, but at UFC 129 Im gonna be rooting for GSP. I think hes a better overall fighter, and I like him a lot more as a person.
wewerelegend1 9 months ago
@wewerelegend1 hughes did fight gsp im his prime... made gsp tap out
smhpgh23 9 months ago
@wewerelegend1 Actually matt hughes even admitted gsp was the better welterweight and dana white even said gsp could be the best welterweighth ever...... and he did say that
RyAnNoChAlLeNge 6 months ago
@RyAnNoChAlLeNge I know everyone is saying that now, and I saw that at the end of the Hughes St Pierre 3 fight, where he said GSP was the better fighter. But I still believe matt hughes is the greatest welterweight in history. Thats not to say Im a HUGE GSP fan, I just like Hughes better
wewerelegend1 6 months ago
@wewerelegend1 TBF the first time GSP fought Matt Hughes, Hughes was in his prime. He had 6 title defenses prior to the bout. Yet he was still dominated until he caught GSP in an armbar at the end of the round. He then went on to have another succession of title defenses, which came to an abrupt end when he met a GSP, in his prime. So to say he was not in his prime when he met GSP is untrue as GSP dominated him right in the midde of his title run, suggesting GSP is the superior fighter.
djrussell1989 6 months ago
@djrussell1989 He wasnt exactly dominated the first time, as he was able to take GSP down, and gain top position. GSP was winning on the feet, but Matt Hughes has never had the greatest boxing in MMA. And when GSP took his belt away, he was around 35. That is out of his prime, which was around 30-33. I think GSP has a wider skill set, and currently puts them to better use, but 5-10 years ago, I would probably bet money on Hughes
wewerelegend1 6 months ago
@wewerelegend1 Age doesn't really have anything to do with prime. Look at Anderson Silva who is currently mid thirties and yet is the No.1 PFP fighter. Or the best Example, The natural 'captain America'. Hughes was brilliant, however GSP in his prime would definately beat, if not dominate Matt Hughes. Even if we look at the best opponent each has faced i.e. BJ Penn GSP beat him twice while BJ beat Hughes twice. I believe Matt Hughes is a brilliant fighter and epic champion however GSP is better.
djrussell1989 6 months ago
@djrussell1989 But look at Chuck Liddell and Ken/Frank Shamrock. Those guys were legends, but they all did or need to retire, they just cant/couldnt cut it. And I have to say that Im a little biased, Im just to big a Matt Hughes fan. I wish he would go train with GSP or BJ Penn more, so he could gain some of their skills
wewerelegend1 5 months ago
@wewerelegend1 Matt Hughes is awesome but GSP is the superior fighter. I don't think it would matter if he trained with GSP because the difference between them is genetic i.e. GSP's phenomenal athleticism. As for BJ i'm pretty sure they have trained together. I think it was in preparation for BJ vs Fitch.
djrussell1989 5 months ago
@djrussell1989 Matt Hughes did train with Penn for the Penn/Fitch fight, but that was AFTER he fought him for a 3rd time. And I know GSP is better, I would just like to think Matt Hughes could somehow find a way to beat him. Oh, since you seem to know what your talking about, who do you call in the GSP/Diaz fight?
wewerelegend1 5 months ago
@djrussell1989 Oh, and to point out one more thing, BJ Penn is actually a better fighter than GSP, he just is worse conditioned, so he couldnt keep up with him, but skill wise, he really does have the edge over pretty much every fighter in the world
wewerelegend1 5 months ago
@wewerelegend1 Conditioning is an important factor in fighting though. Its like saying he is only a better fighter because he can punch harder, they are both important factors. However i don't really disagree with what you say about skill. However GSP just should always win because of his physical abilities i.e. strength, explosive power and conditioning.
djrussell1989 5 months ago
@djrussell1989 I agree with that, but Matt Hughes is by no means an unconditioned fighter. He probably is less powerful than GSP though
wewerelegend1 5 months ago
@djrussell1989 And yes, that is true, but based just on skill alone, BJ is superior in grappling and striking, but not wrestling and conditioning, which is why GSP beat him
wewerelegend1 5 months ago
@wewerelegend1 That is probably true but like I said you need to have the physical ability to impliment your skills, they are just as important as the skills themselves, which BJ does not and thats why GSP is the better fighter.
djrussell1989 5 months ago
@djrussell1989 I can agree with that, but I believe BJ Penn has the potential to be the best, and if he beats Carlos Conduit, then he will get the chance to prove it
wewerelegend1 5 months ago
@wewerelegend1 I think he can beat Condit but i don't believe he can beat GSP these days, he couldnt even beat Fitch, a guy GSP dominated a couple of years ago. GSP has improves tonnes since then.
djrussell1989 5 months ago
@djrussell1989 I agree that GSP would definetly be the favorite, but I would never count BJ out, especially now that hes really starting to improve his game. I would love to see a BJ motivated enough to actually get in great shape, and go to war, instead of getting dominated, like last time.
wewerelegend1 5 months ago
@djrussell1989 I agree, but I say you can never count BJ Penn out, if he gets his cardio good, and devolps some more muscle, then the odds will definetly be evened, and GSP will have his hands full
wewerelegend1 5 months ago
@wewerelegend1 You can never count anyone out but BJ has had two attempts and failed, failing badly on the second one. Its not like he wasnt training and attempting to develop his cardio, muscularity and strength especially for the second fight, he just lost to the better fighter.
djrussell1989 5 months ago
@djrussell1989 Thats true. I just want BJ to perform at his best, because if he does, it really will be an amazing fight
wewerelegend1 5 months ago
@wewerelegend1 i think gsp would beat him, but matt hughes is still a great fighter

MOST dominant welter weight ever!. I want to see gsp keep up when he hits his late 30s... my guess is not a chance. True pioneer of UFC.
bhsin1 1 year ago
agreed many people talking shit about hughes now.
