It's meant to be a contingency to terrestrial providers and to give internet access to more rural regions like farm lands and fishing villages. It's cheaper and more efficient than setting up millions of kilometers of cable.
@VerticalhorizonXL - In my area Comcast/NBC charges $62.95 for 20mbps . . . and after using it for a few months I can say its terrible, it slows down during peak times between 7pm and 10pm . . . terrible service as well, they charge You $5 for a crappy modem that doesn't support wireless network and only support single wired connection.
What happened to anti-trust aka anti-monopoly laws in the US? Comcast, AT&T hold huge monopolies in the US and their only the tip of the iceberg.
i tried internet satellite and it has very high latencey, online games are unplayable 800~1200 ms

well internet over satellite is not very good ^^
it's fast but u get very bad ping times and it is impossible to play online shooters

Actually in Japan 80mbps is only $35 a month can you believe that? But Comcast's 20mbps in USA is the exact same price which sucks.
