I'll never forget sitting in the Palestra in Philadelphia watching a Big Five college basketball game, having just arrived with a friend of mine after a six hour drive from Boston. We knew the USA-USSR hockey game was in progress and was close in the second period. We had no updates after that, until the Palestra crowd erupted in a deafening roar that had nothing to do with the basketball game. We knew it could only mean one thing - and looked up at the messageboard... USA 4, USSR 3...
Бывает и такое, не все же время выигрывать, что было то было, зато сейчас вы и в до полуфинала еле-еле доходите, глупые америкашки))) Этот матч - прошлое, нужно жить настоящим, а в настоящем вы сосете!
And the Russian Bear was such an easy thing to hate and fear back then, so it made it so much better. Imagine how the Russians felt. They took this game for granted, having beaten us 10-3 in a game in NYC days before the Olympics opened. This is the single best game in the history of hockey and helped put hockey on the sports map in the USA.
I believe the funniest thing is when Herb Brooks told his incredulous assistant coach (Patrick) that the reason the Soviets did not pull their goalie with a minute remaining was they did not know how to do it because they were used to creaming people and so they didn't know how to react.
In the film there is commentary which mentions that the USA team is so well conditioned and are out skating the russians late in the game. Is that part of real commentary or is artistic licence commentary that was only in the film?
@generalbullmoose in hockey they can go for like 9 min without a goal its just harder to get i guess but the sad thing is you can go 9 min without a goal turn around and completely miss the shot.
Why does Al Michaels say Jim Craig played every second of every game in the Olympics when he was pulled in the last minute of the game against Sweden so the USA could put an extra skater on the ice? I'm not really up on hockey rules and regulations and whatnot. Does that not count against Craig or did Michaels just make a mistake?
there are about as many Vs in the names of the players as the number of players Ilya Bryzgalov Evgeni Nabokov Semyon Varlamov Sergei Gonchar Denis Grebeshkov Konstantin Korneyev Andrei Markov Ilya Nikulin Fedor Tyutin Anton Volchenkov Maxim Afinogenov Pavel Datsyuk Sergei Fedorov Ilya Kovalchuk Viktor Kozlov Evgeni Malkin Aleksey Morozov Alexander Ovechkin Alexander Radulov Alexander Semin Danis Zaripov Sergei Zinovjev
@trueblue724 I disagree, it should be about the best athletes in the world..So you're going to disallow the best speed skater for instance just because they received a $50 dollar lunchean..Silly..If they are the best, they should compete against the best, if you want amatuers then watch college sports...
@rencro123 i understand, but the olympics were originally made for amatures until our country started using professional players,i just think they should stick to the way it started,i mean we get to see our pro athletes perform year round here,as well as our amatures, but just not as much as the pro's,i just think we should stick to the original script, but everyone is entitled to their opinion :)
@trueblue724 Wow, not used to that type of reply, its refreshing.. Makes me feel as if I was over aggressive on my stance. I agree with your counter argument as well, we do get to see them all the time, as well this great moment would not have happened if the current system were in place. But, the old system was exploitable, the Soviets had the Red Army team so as to keep their amateur status, yet none of them actually served, and were they really amateurs?
1 good game by US team. First and last. Hockey world is about only between Russia and Canada. And some Sweden with Chehz :D

Greatest upset in sports history. A bunch of no name college kids taking out a super power. Fantastic. Dreams do come true.

Nope. We'll never see another game like that ever again. The setting, the political environment, the place....never to be replicated again.

So in the last 6 1/2 minutes, the USSR only had three shots on goal. THAT is a great team effort on the part of the USA.
