  • Without question the best fantine. I love Lea Salonga as Eponine, and generally love Lea Salonga but I just didnt think her voice suited Fantine. The 10th anniversary cast was the ultimate cast and will never be beaten. Theres not a single member of that lineup that isnt the best for that role. No member of the current cast would get in the 10th anniversary one. Fact. As for Susan Boyle, its like comparing Usain Bolt to the fastest runner in your High School. Leagues apart.

  • Sorry eponine

  • I prefer ruthie's version over lea salogna, although lea is the best Ronnie I have seen. When I saw lea's I thought it was great but it was missing something. The desperation that fanzine was feeling. Keep in mind she is about to die. For me this song needed real emotion and hat I think ruthie achieved.

  • As if an xtactor retard could compare to greatness. This women looks like she means it .

  • Ruthie Henshall make me to love this song more than Lea or Susan! Sorry!

  • flawless

  • without fail, my dad ALWAYS cries to this song

  • I love how she put the roughness in her voice... I BELIEVE her. Listen to the lyrics... She has a right to have a roughness to her voice at that instant. It fits and it's passionate. She sounds perfect.

  • curse you Susan Boyle!

  • SUSAN BOYLE FROM ENGLAND IS WAAAAAY BETTER !!!!!!!!!!!

  • @TheZemun That's a matter of opinion. Personnally, I loved Susan Boyle's performance of 'I Dreamed a Dream'. It was phenominal and I had to listen to it numerous times. But (and no offense meant here) Ruthie Henshall's singing this song was just a lot better in my opinion. (I seem to ramble pointlessly)

  • @MsEmilyPotter First of all, I do apologize if I upset you , but, really , I watched both of them and in my opinion , somehow , i think that Susan was more honest than Ruthie . Because Susan was alone there , beginner , no background , no support and totally committed to win....

  • Loop or 10-hour version please

  • I love Ruthie and I've seen many of her brilliant performances, but I must say Lea Salonga took this role to another level. Salonga not only performed Fantine, she became Fantine.

  • @jlcal2012 nope not impressed with Lea. She is good. But this version touches me more.

  • @oilylioratuto i dont understand why everybody feels like this version is better. She messes up while Lea Salonga doesn't. I like Salonga's better.

  • @oilylioratuto Rutjie is perfect. She shows the perfect emotion and really tells a story. Lea's good but ruthie is great

  • that was fuckin, BAD-ASS.

  • Lea Salonga will forever be the best Fantine in MY OPINION. And her voice is so breathtakingly beautiful.

  • amazing song. but her voice cracked.

  • This video has a shockingly low view count... it's the best song ever sung.

  • @katydurpee i so agree, a very touching beautifully song, could listing to this 4 ever

  • This song isn't just show stopping, it's heart stopping. All the emotion she put into this song/character is so amazing!!

  • Pure, simple, lasting one of the best show tunes

  • Press Like if Susan brought you here.

  • i have the biggest chill dwn my spine ever listening to this ...angel....her passion her desire to sing this song so beautifully overwhelms me, this amasing song helps me put closure on love one,s ive have lost , i picture them smiling in heaven,, ruthie henshall .. thank you xxx

  • 2:56 Did she do that roughness in the voice on purpose?

  • @TakumiFujiwara80 Yeah, I think she did. Her voice is so pure that there was no need to put the roughness in her voice without emotional reason.

  • @TakumiFujiwara80 of course ...

  • Ruthie Henshall is amazing, but not just for her singing, I like her mainly for her stupendous acting and feeling.

  • @RyanLokan she is amazing.

  • no comparison

  • lejos lo mejor se las mando

  • if you don't like it, just listen to your own and shut the f@#k up...

  • wow,,,i want to make a sophisticated comment,,,,all i can say is,,,wow,,,,,perfection

  • the tenth anniversary rendition of this entire musical is by far the best.

  • Ruthie will always be Fantine to me.

  • @jmcferrer you must not have an understanding of what a good singer is

  • Im am in the purest listening heaven that can exsist. I am agog. I went to see Elaine Page in Les Miserables, I thought that was fantastic. I feel like I just had a lunch bag let down. I should have spent the money to see Ruthie Henshall instead, Her voice is like honey compared to Elaine. Pure magnificence.

  • @tinroofbusted really? Elaine Page never did Les Miz. she said it her self

  • @aikenemmanuel I am going to rely on you it was several years ago and I could have sworn that My aunt said it was Elaine Page we were going to see. Did she just do a choice of songs and this was included perhaps and I have mixed it up with something else. You might know better then I. Still Ruthie has a wonderful voice, It feels very emotional near the end. Ill ask the Old girl next time I see her at Christmas. Thanks for the correction much appreciated.

  • Ruthie set the bar so high that no one has ever come close to emulating her performance as Fantine.

  • @ThefightingCelt well said and very true. she is amasing

  • The best version of I dreamed a dream I ever seen T_T

  • Just awesome, no matters who sing it.

  • Ruthie ..... really nails this , both in voice and emotion shown ..... bravo

  • my favourite fantines are

    1 rebecca seale

    2 ruthie henshall

    3 lea salong

    4 pattilepon

  • Ruthie is better, Lea just screams all the time

  • Ruthie Henshall is my favourite Fantine. Followed by Lea Salogna. That is all.

  • Very AWESOME! SERIOULSY!!! NOT HEARD ANYTHING LIKE IT! +630

  • try watching lea salonga's version on the 25th anniversary...

  • I prefer Lea's version... I think she has better tone, and articulation. I like her clear voice that reverberates through the room...

  • This is my favorite Fantine

  • one of the few recordings of one of the few songs that brings tears to my eyes every time...that's real power...ruthie is amazing!

  • I can't decide whether I like Lea or Ruthie better...

  • Better then Susan Boyle anyway.

  • this is why the 10th was called the dream cast

  • i think lea's version is better..

  • I've heard SO many Fantines over the years, and she remains my absolute favorite. <3

  • I think Ruthie just has a better voice than Lea

  • you gotta be kidding.

  • This was Tupac Shakur's favorite song.

  • i was singing this song while drinking CocaCola and my friend looked at me and I started laughing and Coke came out of my nose and I started choking on it....Did i mention I love this song?

  • so much emotion shown by Ruthie as she belts this one out - very moving and utterly fantastic rendition

  • she is amazing &heart;

  • Comment removed

  • Chills everytime.

  • she sings to be on stage, not to sell albums <3

  • big like to her <3

  • <3

  • outstanding!!

  • thats a great song sung by a great singer!

  • these are the real singers. classic singers

  • Best version ever! IMO

  • Susan Boyle is an amatuer. A fine voice. Lea and Ruthie are pro's and it shows. The pro's will dothis 1000 times ina row and never miss, trust me I know. This song along with many in this show devastate me when done well. All three of these talented women do it well. How can you choose. Worst of all ... this world is so sad when crap gets 2 million hits and this masterpiece has 22,000. I'm glad I'm old.

  • @dabermanator The reason is that youtube keep removing this version due to copywright - previous postings of this clip have been well over a million.

  • How the fuck can this only have 41k views and Glee has over 2 million? There are no words.

  • Such refined emotion. She better exemplifies the defeated sorrow that Fantine feels than anyone else who's performed this song.

  • i think i'm loosing the plot i've stooped needing a beat in music

  • Well, I don't know both of Ruthie and Lea. But then, I so much love how Ruth singing this song...Oh God...it's full of emotions, not an empty one. So full till my tears are flowing...beautiful Ruth, very beautiful

  • "Now life has killed the dream...I dreamed..."

    TEARS ARE FLOWING LIKE RAIN.

  • i just love ruthies soft voice gives me a shiver sown my spine, if i were 2 die tomorrow this would be played at my funeral

  • What I like about Ruthie Henshall is it looks like this song comes effortlessly to her. Lea Salonga sang it beautifully, but she was trying too hard, the acting wasn't quite as natural...if that makes any sense at all. I just think Ruthie portrayed the character of Fantine better.

  • 30,000 view, this play is absolutely amazing and this song is magnificent.

  • @yoh1954 lea has brilliant voice but this song needs passion.

  • JUST FABULOUS .

  • Beautiful! Her voice is breathtaking, and her performance is so lively and filled with emotion.

  • i absolutely love her in this song. I have never heard another version that is as heartfelt as this one <3

  • Ruthie was undoubtedly good here. I think Lea Salonga had the edge in her 25th anniversary interpretation, however, as she had the better and stronger vocals, plus her embodiment of the character was so natural: I could feel Ruthie acting as Fantine, but Salonga BECAME Fantine.

  • @woodlandb234 I agree. Ruthie looked quite wooden to me here, while Lea just oozed with emotion. Plus, Ruthie's voice wasn't acting "rough" - that was her natural voice, which, depending on your taste, might be uniquely lovely or downright unpleasant. But I've seen Ruthie perform well in other roles, so she's definitely got the talent.

  • Her voice is amazing.

  • Ruthie is incredible... Lea is one of my favorite singers ever, but this song is out of her range.

  • My absolute favourite interpretation of all the Fantines I've heard. Ruthie simply rocks this. Her acting and emotions are absolute perfection.

  • just beautiful. makes me want to cry every time, she makes me feel every single word shes singing. pure emotion and i love when her voice croaks..its as though shes telling the story and wants to cry. i feel it. i love it.

  • Aye Ruthie shows more passion than some, but Lea Salonga is a strong contender as well.

  • @yoh1954 I agree. I prefer Ruthie's version over Lea's slightly, but mainly because I think she looks more the part of Fantine. Although Lea also has an incredible voice sometimes I feel she comes across a little young, I think I much prefer Lea as Eponine.

  • @RuthieHenshallFan Agreed, but I would put Randy Graff (the original Broadway Fantine) up there as well. I think Randy's voice is the best suited to Fantine. It's deep and rich, whereas Ruthie, and especially Lea, have more soprano. All are worth the listen.

  • if you watch this video and compare it to lea's version of the song in the 25th anniversary of les miserables, i think lea is better

  • @RuthieHenshallFan Agreed on all points! I feel like Lea wastes too much time over acting rather than focusing on putting her emotions into the music.

  • @RuthieHenshallFan I agree, I much prefer Ruthie as Fantine but the character is not meant to be old at all, she is meant to be in her 20's :)

  • @yoh1954 It really isn't that close. I don't think this song has EVER been performed better than it was right here by Ruthie.

  • stunning beautiful.....song aint bad either....MUCH better than Boyles

  • Been listening to the pro's and then Susan Boyle. The pro's have better diction, but not a better voice or emotion.

  • @Tonithenightowl I think they do have better emotion too. At least definitely more than Boyle had on her BGT audition. Maybe Boyle's improved since...haven't seen her perform it again. Boyle's voice is undeniably amazing but her actual performance of the song is lacking.

  • @RuthieHenshallFan Well she's not a polished professional. Don't know if she will ever be.She's more a singing in the tavern type but with an exceptional voice. Could she be trained to sing opera like the pros? Maybe but then she wouldn't be herself anymore.

  • @Tonithenightowl rubbish

  • @murphy1980100 Not sure what you are referring to as rubbish but whatever you are entitled.

  • @Tonithenightowl referring to Susan Boyles I dreamed a dream. good but cant compare to the pros.

  • @murphy1980100 Pros are better trained, that doesn't mean they have a better voice than Susan.

  • @Tonithenightowl no it doesn't, but personally I still think they do

  • @RuthieHenshallFan Boyle was only amazing because of the surprise effect. If there would be a beautiful woman with no story, her voice was good but not amazing...

  • @RuthieHenshallFan she's not a pro. She's still great.

  • @Tonithenightowl The "Pros" (a name used for a reason) are also trained ACTORS who convey way more emotion.

  • @Tonithenightowl it's funny how your comment has no likes

  • @zaneearldufour I know apparently there are those with no taste wink wink

  • As an afterthought: what IS wrong (when considering Boyle and Henshall) is the paltry number of hits this version has compared with Boyle's TV clip. Though it has to be said, I found this site (Henshall) because of Boyle, and I doubt I'm alone in that. But isn't it such a shame that things of such quality as this don't always get the exposure? Our culture is often like a little child who pushes away the best food....

  • Incredible control, amazing expression (listen 3:41 with the entire orchestra in competition!!) - purity. She sang her potent heart out for this anniversary - talk about a sense of occasion! And yet, I can't dismiss Boyle - like Pavarotti, Boyle has such incredible volume. Not the same subtlety, but on the biggest notes something opens up in Boyle's voice & the hairs stand up on your neck. Boyle probably didn't have the same opportunities to perform regularly, to hone. Let's keep both, eh?

  • scrap susan boyle RUthie was and always will be the best at singing this beautiful song...=)

  • this was such a good song to ding then susan boyle went and vanalised it. now it's impossible to sing the song without anyone thinking/saying 'hey isn't that susan boyle's song?'

  • I'm really blown away by this....it leaves you in tears...Bravo!

  • It takes a rare talent to convey that much emotion in a vocal performance. This is an extraordinary delivery of a song too often sung 'beautifully' but without the truth and pain Ruthy Henshall manages to convey. Just brilliant!

  • ever

  • i have to sing this for school and man she is awesomee

  • Doesn't matter what u listen to before......Ruthie is fantastic!

  • heartbroken

  • I cant forgive her voice because it sounds great , I love her version of I dreamed a Dreamed.... i feel the voice of cries

  • This is awesome. Thanks!!

  • Amazing!

  • best performance of this song ever

  • i agree!x

  • @angelicvoices amen, make me cry, such passion she is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G l am worldless

  • You are simply the BEST, Ruthie!

    Thank you very much, RHF!!
