cont. She performed admirably and valuably throughout WW1, even earning the nickname "Old Reliable' I believe, and the fact she was the only ship left out of the original 3 is even more reason she should have been kept. The only real positive I can see in her demise, was she proved invaluable to the workers on the Clyde still realing from The Great Depression.
I hope this helps clarify my original point. All the Best, I will never forget my time on the QM1. Long may she live on. Regards
To everyone that keeps complaining,I was only pointing out to someone who stated the English would have taken care of QM1 better than the Americans, that the British have a less than perfect record in looking after her ships. As for not being a ship of any note, she is all but identical to Titanic, built during the same period, by the same men, and would be only the second last original White Star vessel afloat after the SS Nomadic (Titanics tender out of Cherborg) currently undergoing a refit.
If I'm not mistaken, doesn't the QMII have one of the QM's horns? I used to live in LB and I have to say, hearing that magnificent whistle blow was something I always looked forward to. The Tuesday noon Disaster Warning SIren in San Francisco just isn't quite the same...
@Gryphonalia you are Correct. the Queen Mary 2 is sounding her combination of two brand new horns and an original 1934 Queen Mary horn here (on loan from the City of Long Beach)
Im searching for information on the RMS Queen Elizabeth 2, now in all her years, has she ever came to Long Beach, California to visit the RMS Queen Mary??
I've noticed from my visits to the QM that the horn sounds much better from behind the funnle than in front of it. I gess it's just how sound travels. They both soud magnificous anyway.
Both such beautiful ships. I remember being in awe that the QM2 was so massive, she was too large to fit beneath our Bridge connecting to Terminal Island ( Vincent Thomas Bridge). Both ships are beyond awe!
Interesting thing, you can hear a guy say, "Ours is more farty!" Then somebody starts laughing. Was he referring to the Queen Mary's whistle? Funny story, I was with my family in Long Beach, and we were waiting for a boat to take us to Catalina Island, and when the Queen Mary whistle went off right at 12:00 Noon, my sister looked over at my stepdad and said, "Oh my gosh! Nice fart Dad!" LOL LOL Lol!
That's so cool. I remember that. Wasn't there, but wanted too. I've been on board the QM1 and she's gorgeous. Very classy/classic and one of a kind. We're taking good care of her in Long Beach. :)
Side note, I'm in the UK for a year and just visited Queen Mary's apartment at Holyrood Palace. Once I connected the pieces, it was cool to have been on the original boat named after her, back home in LB, and then to be in her castle in Scotland. Small world, after all. :)
i hope u r keeping good care of the QM! she was built on the river of my city, glasgow, the river clyde @ the john brown shipyards! also the same place where the QE2 was built as well!
I lived in Long Beach back when this happened so my friend and I went out to the harbor to watch the historic meeting. It was AWESOME! A total carnival atmosphere with people everywhere, it was more crowded then it is for the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach and it was a mid week day! Everyone skipped out of work to be there I guess.
I had the misfortune of standing right under the horns when they sounded. They go off every three hours I think in daytime. Naturally I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. My ears are still ringing now.
A Vigo..llegan todos los grandes barcos del mundo, siendo vigo el segundo puerto mas grande del mundo..yo puedo verlos desde mi ventana..pero nunca los grabaria..es más..me aburro de verlos jasjajs
As has been noted, the original horn from RMS Queen Mary now sails with QM2. It can be heard from a distance of OVER 9 miles and up to 30 on a direct line. There is a lot to be said for traditional engineering.
QM2 horn sounds good the QM1 horn beat it hands down! When I live in California used to visit down Long Beach many of times. When the Queen Mary blows her horn, you can hear it though down town Long Beach. the QM1 was a beast!( That A Good Thing)

America is the most treacherous country on earth ^_^ give us back our Queen Mary 1! Its unbelievable that it was sold to u bastards for u to turn it into a sleazy hotel. Such a shame, there is so much history there and it will be for ever docked in long beach. Its no wonder its haunted the ghost or pissed off LOL
@mickrise Why would we have wanted to look after the Olympic? She was just another ship. She did nothing worthy of historical note. We can't preserve every single ship! 2 out of the 3 ships of that class sank. Not a particularly glorious record.
Besides, many of her interior fittings can be found in hotels and other fixtures around Britain.
your dumb asses sold it to us, and im sorry but it would be doin the same damn thing in one of your docks too and in even shittier condition...eat those apples...*spits in face*
Hey, a hotel beats the ship breakers any day. I'd rather see the Olympic and Mauritania as floating hotels than something only remembered in pictures. Long live the Queen! (And are you going to be mad at Dubai for making the QE2 a floating hotel?)
I'm from the UK and I think she should stay where she is. I've stayed there twice on holiday and if she were moved to the UK there would be such a pampering fuss for about two months then she would be left to rot in our miserable weather.
QM2 transatlantic, New York to Southhamton, the greatest six nights of my life...Long may she reign. What an amazing ship. She will never be equalled. At least not in my lifetime. Cant wait to sail on her again...
Both are queens. Both known throughout the world. One is classic, and will always be rembered. The other is modern, and will prove herself in the oncoming years
I was there...I balled like a baby...my two Queens meet...I stood on the older sisters dock...I could feel her tremble and hear her sigh...it was very moving...
Ive grown up around QM1. There is a 5 star restraunt next to QM1, and we always go there. Its so nice to be able to see QM1 just outside. Last time we were there, there was a royal carribeian vessel there, but I still favored the QM1 over the newer ship. I like the classic look better
Sorry I meant the Tyne,no the Clyde.

@comisariosp Well one of the Queen Mary 2's horn is the original from the Queen Mary, it was donated to Cunard by Long Beach. For the QM2

You're the ones who sold it. Just so you know, we outbid an asian scrapping company. Rather a hotel than sold for scraps right?

Perhaps you poms could look after her like you did RMS Olympic (Titanics twin sister). Oh thats right, you sold her for scrap in 1935
