What a tragic ending for Duncan's lover- The Beautiful Tessa and a whole new beginning for Richie,it just goes to show that we must enjoy the most out of every loved one in our lives because we never know when we will lose them,we must love and appreciate them as if it were the last.
When I watched the series for the forst time I think there was a different ending of this episode. When Richie awackes he notices that he's imortal and asks Duncan about Thessa.
Can someone plz tell me whether I'm wrong or not.
Yeah early in season 1 Duncan tells Richie after a couple hundred years he will get over never knowing his real family. That was forshadowing that Richie would be Immortal. "After a couple 100 years"
I thought he married kate like 200 years ago.. that is what ENDGAME said.. did that not count because she is immortal lol.. OR again Highlander Not showing any continuity between anything ever lol
@pimpprimetime21 Yeah thats what I hated about Highlander writers. They never were consistent with the story the powers or the history. I like the idea, but they really dropped the ball in the writing and stores matching up.
@1988emmah Which song are you referring to? The song that plays when Mac is remembering Tessa is "Dust in the Wind" by Kansas. The song that always plays at the closing credits is "Princes of the Universe" by Queen.
I gotta say this coz i've seen it alot on the comments: other immortals could sense richie was a pre-imortal, but ignored it. probably some code about him being the apprentice of mccleod
I'm so sad that Tessa had to die in this episode. She was a gentle and feminine touch to this testosterone-driven-head-chopping-immortals... And I truly disagree and upset with the music. Why the sudden change? Why did they use "Dust In The Wind" instead of the usual "Who Wants To Live Forever". I mean of course the song is still about the impermanence of human being as mortal but to me it didn't match the mood, the tone, and the feel of Highlander. It is so "not Highlander" :-(
what a senseless death for tessa,,,, now the show from hereon without tessa is less human... not to mention less beauty.... she's the reason why i got hooked on this show... :( ... now it's all just testosterone-filled head-chopping episodes.... which is not all that bad
that blond hair palm reader I have seen her in other shows can remember her name though. pain of the hart the end of this make me cry I have felt pain like that before. {who wants to live forever}/ nothing last for ever dust in the wind. they are both good songs I would of like d who wants to live forever, better.
@Thepaly Oddly enough, though they can repair pretty much any damage from cuts, gunshots, burns, resurect after electrocution, not drown in water, they can be gassed to death (and revive) but cut their throat and they keep a scar there, cut off a limb they lose that limb and it doesn't grow back. There are limits, even if those limits don't make much sense in some cases. Apparently they can reconect the amputated limb, but I've not seen this so far myself. Check out Xavier St Cloud.
@TheEverTwistedOne i watched in one of the movies... i think it was HL3, connor slashed an opponent (the one who was trapped in a cave for a long time) in half. he was cut in the waist....he just had to carry his upper body using his arms and put himself over the lower part of his body, and he healed again.... continued the swordfight agiainst duncan.... there writers of that movie were trying to be funny, since the first time the villain reconnected his body parts, his butt was in front
Am I the only one that knew Richie was gonna be an immortal? seriously even when i was lil i figured it out, he always had that apprenticeship kinda feeling to him. sad what happens to Richie later though.
hey did anyone notice in the first (and only) highlander movie that when connor dies for the first time he is supposed to lying dead but is clearly breathing?
I remember seeing this show for the first time on Sci-Fi and this very episode gave me a really bad impression of the show. For years I had no idea what I was missing until now.
@2199 Actually, in the first season opening, the show Ritchie's face as the line "I am immortal, I have inside me blood of kings" plays. Also I thought Richie might be an immortal when they couldn't find his real parents.
@imlikeagodtoyou I watched til the last show of the series.........then they got drunk with power and thought they would like Raven with Amanda. They thought wrong.
I hope I'm not the only one who was glad Who Wants to Live Forever wasn't used for the Tessa montage. Dust in the Wind really fits better with the manner in which Tessa died. However I did love how Who Wants to Live Forever was still used later when Duncan does think about Tessa in Leader of the Pack.
I think the scene with Mac telling Richie he always was immortal after he comes back to life was in a flashback of this scene in a future episode, they must have filmed more at the time and not used it.
I appreciate the fact that she is already dead when Duncan arrives and they don't get to the cheesy last words scene with her dying in his arms.
I read that the actress left because she didn't like to spend 9 month a year on the other side of the planet away from her family. I can understand that but it is also a shame because the on screen chemistry between those two was really good. I bought that they were a couple which I seldom do... At least they gave her a good death.
I was just surprised they killed her off so early on in the series. Only a few episodes into the second season. I was surprised when I watched this back in the 90's.
lol this was filmed in the 90's. the spin off movies were made years later so yeah, they kinda changed the story of him married. i mean they changed this series to from the original Highlander movie story. thats hollywood for ya.
Actually, I really like that Tessa was killed in a mugging. A series like this runs the risk of having so many dramatic threats from fantastic people that the series no longer feels like it happens in the real world. Tessa wasn't killed by a secret conspiracy or a supernatural entity, she was killed by a threat that you or I might face. That makes MacLeod's situation easier to empathize with, and grounds the series in reality in a way that's reiterated every time a character mourns Tessa.
It's been a long time since I watched this show, and I don't think I saw this episode back then. I vaguely remember richie being immortal and tessa being dead but I couldn't remember for sure. I spent this whole time waiting to see if I was right and how it happened and after all they've been through... they got mugged? That seems somewhat anticlimactic.
Screw honor. If I was Duncan I'd put some training into close quarters firearm training and start packing. We know bullets will slow an immortal down so why not. Plug them a few times then cut off the head.
I believe the actress that played Tessa wanted time off to have a child. Even besides that I think the writers want to show what it is like for the immortals to live and out live their mortal lovers/friends. I believe that is one of the prices for their immortality.
I found this to be a very unsatisfying way of getting rid of a main character it was almost as if it was written in at the last moment after some massive off screen argument. I would have preferred if she took a break and came back or her character was killed off in an end of season finale.
Great choice of music for the final montage though!!
Thank You, Thank You for clearing that up for me! These are the only replays I've seen of this series, so I was unaware other releases had also been altered.
I wonder if the time was made-up by adding back previous footage edited-out or if the episode is just shorter period.
The one 'thing' I did NOT like about the death scene was Richie 'coming back' like he had been napping. No gasping breath, no shock or freak out. He slowly opened his eyes, looking slightly dazed, and kinda sits-up. Lame.
When this episode originally aired, wasn't there more to the Tessa/Richie death scene?
I remember Richie 'waking up', realizing what happened to him and asking Mac,"You knew all along?" Mac shakes his head or says "Yes", and Richie asks, "Tessa?" and Mac shakes his head or says "No". Then the scene change and Tessa montage.
Am I wrong about this?
neostardust: Your post indicates you're new to Highlander? Enjoy! I love martial arts and this series is one of my all time favorites.
Tessa's death influenced the rest of the series, making it more pessimistic, and creating a significant precedent; Tessa was the first main character of the series to die.
Her performance was generally praised by reviewers, who especially praised the strong on-screen relationship that Vandernoot and Paul created between their characters. When Vandernoot decided to leave the show, her character was killed, leading to fierce protests among the show's audience and subsequently prompted the producers to have Vandernoot play an evil lookalike of Tessa in the episode "Counterfeit". Despite her return,
i think it's funny how now that duncan knows about these watchers, they've gotten really bad at not being noticed. i mean, come on... standing right in view not 5 feet away, staring right at him? (taxidermist scene)
Bobanort: Yes, I also caught the "watched over" part, but missed the "trained" part of that short exchange. I must revisit that...
If I remember correctly, an [already] immortal can sense a yet-to-be immortal, but not vice versa. However, the level emanating from the yet-to-be is less intense?
I've often wondered why the writers never explored the scenario of a yet-to-be dieing of old age because no one took their head first. The character becomes immortal at, say, 97? Intriguing to me...
@volleydrummer however, there were several episodes in season 1 when older immortals weren;t able to sense ritchie (eg. amanda and zachary and that guy who played rayden).... i think he was only sensed by gregor... 2 episodes back when he was hinting that ritchie was an immortal.
@waltermh111 i belive the way tessa died was better than if the watcher that was holding her would have killed her, it shows that no matter what lengths we go to save someone death is always just around the corner ( or accross the street)
wow what an episode full of passion and desire but it really didn't say how Richie became an immortal

Theres no true way to avenge her death, to bring highlander style justice.

The ending was well done, great acting, the sort of smirk and yet obvious sadness in the scene where he tells ritchie to watch his head.
