At 14:35 you seemed a bit surprised about how your apoapsis "ran off", as you waited for the periapsis to "climb" above the atmosphere. The main reason for this is that your rocket's nose was pointing a bit above the horizon (Kerbin's curved surface had "bent" the horizon since you aimed at the direction-of-travel marker).

In the VAB, you can use symetry for the struts. just remember to edit only the "original" not the copies. editing the copies wont work at all with symetry on.(guess its a bug,getting the blue dots floating in space :) when remove/delete one off the copies only).

The symerty works only on the part you created first. that part you can edit easy with symetry on

Kurt, in the VAB, if you right-click the symmetry button, it will go backwards. So if you're at 2, right-click once instead of clicking forward 5 times.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!!! HDG should be 270 deg! You again went in OPPOSITE direction... this ep. saddens me :( And unnecessary fuel los when you start tilting when you're practically already outside the atmosphere. Pleas Kurt read PM's and at least try those ideas out :(

@StelarCF I meant potential fuel loss - it's much easier to miss the target on HDG 90 than 270 - you then have to level orbit with Mun or keep spinning and pray you'll eventually hit it... And don't get angry at me for no reason - if you read closely you'll see that fuel part was about takeoff - he tilted when Farlander was exiting atmosphere instead of ~16km witch is more cost-effective and is standard s.o.p. for takeoff.

Oh and I usually tilt when I'm at my apogee and then do an orbit burn (best place for orbiting with least fuel is 70-71 km... 100km uses much more fuel)

@StelarCF OK may be HDG is just a matter of habit, but on takeoff I must disagree. I tilt at 15-25km - it allows to get some horizontal speed early - saves time, fuel, and gives MUCH more control on initial orbit size. I get first Ap at around 85km. The way you describe requires 2 separate burns, each one is like basically starting from 0m/s...

@XeroGees The "gee" part in apogee and perigee refers to Earth. Since this is Kerban and not Earth, it uses the more general terms apoapsis and periapsis. As far as I know, these are the terms used for orbits around anything but Earth (except for the Sun, which has aphelion and perihelion). c:

Kurt, you are pronouncing them right, Apoapsis and Periapsis are just like Apogee and Perigee, but you say Apsis (app-sis) in there instead.

Glad you took my advice of adding the regular SAS modules, they helped Farlander IX stay rock solid. I hope you kept the second stage and used it for your orbital insertion.

9 rockets is overkill? I made a rocket that was almost the exact same as your F-IX, but there were more stages, and there were from 6 - 9 Solid boosters on the bottom. By the way, your takeoffs are slow because you need some Solid boosters. Just put them on radial decouplers and make a stage that separates them, but not the liquid engines.

Kurt, you want overkill, supe up the solid booster so that it has a massive amount of fuel, super light, and cannot blow up, ever. build a rocket with three of those and orbit the sun.

That design is actually very similar to one I was pondering in my head. But I wasn't sure how stable it would be.

I noticed that when I had a 4 wing design about mid ship (as long as it's not too long), that would work pretty well. 3 wings just don't seem to be terribly stable for whatever reason.

Fun fact: Jebediah will only frown if things go horribly wrong, like if he's about to die. I'm a tad ashamed to say he's frowned many times with me. xD

from the looks of kurts rocket design, it seems likely that when he reaches the moon and tries to touch down, he'll crush his remaining engine, stranding him there. However getting to the moon in itself is quite the achievement, and i can't wait to see what happens next

@ArmedFlygon I imagine he's just going to orbit the Mun then return. Currently the only way to "safetly" land on the Mun is by attaching winglets to the bottom of the final stage so that they are the lowest point on the craft and take the force of landing.

@harrisontan The advanced SAS modules help by managing the thrust vectoring and the winglets. The normal SAS modules help maintain atittude control by using a gyroscope to induce torque. The benefits of advanced SAS modules do not stack, yet normal SAS modules do. So if you put 10 A-SAS systems, it will be the same as putting 1 A-SAS
