I guess it depends on how you interpret meanings. If you believe in reader response then it doesn't matter what the author meant when writting the words, it only matters what they mean to you now. I can see some validity in this, but the meaning takes on whole new shapes and dimensions if you try to figure out what the author is meaning to say. For instance, without religion this song is being sung to a loved one and that is about all you can do with the lyrics.
