The Irish have fought well in international wars all throughout history, they fought because they were displaced and it was a way of life that they had come to know back home.
@kaindrg Not Grenadiers they look more like Hessians. Hired by the British to fight against the Colonials. The Irish brigades on both sides of the war dreamed of taking their formidable brigades back to Ireland to oust the British invaders .
Like their forefathers in the War of Independence the Confederates were true Americans, screaming about ‘liberty’ and ‘freedom’ while living off the backs of slaves.
@Wingatewasright Funny you mention that when the majority of southerners did not own slaves. They were far too poor to afford such an expensive commodity. Most who had small farms eeked out a meager living right along side free blacks in the south. The majority of the southern soldiers fought because their homeland had been invaded by an army who was there to change their way of life. The same way England invaded Ireland.
@panzerabwerkanone Rubbish. The poor whites fought because they believed that the end of slavery would mean that free Blacks would be able to compete for ‘their’ jobs and a greater supply of free labour would drive down wages. Poor Whites fought for slavery just as surely as the richest.
@Wingatewasright Delusional. Your comment makes no sense in terms of the primary domestic prdguct of the South which was agriculture. It required huge numbers of workers on a large plantation pre industrial revolution. None of that labour could be could be considered free. Caring for and protecting an investment as they would any other piece of property they owned. Slavery was simply cheaper, more dependable and more cost effective than hired hands.
@Wingatewasright The competition you mention for wage earning jobs was more feared by poor immigrants in the North. They did not want freed slaves coming north to compete for their jobs. Look up the draft riots that took place in the large cities in the immigrant communities. Aside from the horrific slaughter many of the immigrant draftees didn't want to fight to free slaves. Southern plantations still would need large numbers of workers. Choice be free white or free negro.
How is it that america has fought wars to allow people to be SOUTH KOREAN and SOUTH VIETNAMISE yet devastated and raped the south of their own self determining population it was never about race or slavery it was $
You gotta give the south props for fighting hard and bravely but that still doesn't change the fact that the South was full of Faggot slave owners. General Sherman Southern bitchez beating the south at their own game !!

Many times soldiers had little to eat in the war and would many times fight mainly for food like one account of Confederate Colonel Len T. von Zincken from a Louisiana regiment heard a Irishman yell "Charge 'em, boys they have cheese in their haversacks!"
@IbroxSam ulster is an irish province you tit. And 'ultser' aka unionism/loylaism (which btw isn't ulster) is only right if 'right' is discrimination, collusion and rife sectarianism. If that is that you call 'right' then I'd say you guys get first prize you stupid sectarian idiot.

prehaps you can come up with a new response? Thats generally how arguements work, people say one thing, then the other counters it until the discussion ends. Repeating yourself in an arguement won't get you very far, it's also a sign that you have lost the arguemnt.
@IbroxSam I am an Irish American, so I am not as familiar with the issue, but why do you support the confederates? Is it because the paramilitary groups like the UDL have become increasingly hard right and racist?
some of my ancestors were irish who fought in the civil war and afterwards moved out west so this song is great! come to think of my granfather use to hum a song similar to this when was silversmithing.
Any Respect that was left for the CSA after the war was destroyed by the hate groups that used the her battle flag. God bless The USA that holds the CSA and The Union.
Dear and respected Zeus, I suggest that you block this idiot under the name "freelebenon". He gladly gives any of his time to offending anyone without any basis, truly. And he never stops - until someone makes him.
One of the greatest victories of Confederate Irish was Captain Richard W. Dowling, with 43 men armed with rifles and 6 small cannons defended Sabine Pass, Texas, in 1863 and defended against a Federal fleet trying to land 15,000 men. Dowling sank one gunboat, captured two others, and turned away the rest of the fleet. He took 400 prisoners and didn't take any losses. All the men got silver medals from Jefferson Davis.
im a boy from Ireland and i listen to this song and i understand wat the confederates fought for but we also have to remember that the irish fought against the southerners.
@freelebenon I certainly can. I've told you already to come to Debrecen, then I'll beat all your disgusting blasphemies out of you! In the meantime, punk, face the fact: it is you who needs to be fucked and raped. Probably by an elephant. Then maybe you'll be put down enough so that you'll give up writing unestablished and unrightful offenses.
@starinthehouse1 they also fought with us southerners this war was a war between father and son, brother and brother, cousin and cousin, friend against friend it don't matter where you're from it was what you fought for.
Guys, I don't understand. Kelly's Irish Brigade fought for the Union. This song is great, and I'm absolutely pro-CSA, but what Irish Brigade is being sung about here??
@kexember General Cobb had a Irish regiment that fought under his command at Fredericksburg, but they were from Georgia not Missouri. I'll get back to you on that one.............if I find an answer of course.

@kexember This song is for the Confederate Irish Brigade headed by Joseph Kelly, NOT Patrick Kelly of the Union Irish Brigade. Joseph Kelly was an Irish immigrant and grocer in St. Louis, MO, before he joined the Confederate army. Cheers.
@freelebenon So we have Hungarians and Irish, but where do the Mongols come in, idiot? It is a genetically proven fact that both peoples are European by blood. Both of our nations are being raped by liberal democracy, the financial manipulations of worldwide banking dinasties, moral depravity, materialism and a lack of spiritual nobility... But by a worm like you whose idiocy and primitivity are beyond imagination... Come on! You're nothing.
@AmericanZeus Thanks for posting this sir. I'm a huge Civil War backer. Screw what is marked in the high school history books. General Robert E. Lee was an awesome General. Much respect and Aloha from Hawaii!
@AmericanZeus Robert E. Lee was my hero, and a TRUE Confederate and American. It took a true man and hero to surrender his entire nation to the grip of the oppressive Union. anyways, fantastic song! greetings from Alberta, Canada!
@SlyFox70100 You do realize that Robert E Lee was opposed to slavery correct? The Union was not and is not "oppressive", slavery is oppressive. The CSA refused to change to reflect changes in attitudes of society (Slavery was illegal in most of Europe already, the Royal Navy sometimes intercepted slave ships even). They started the war.
Davis called the Emancipation Proc. the most vile act man has ever committed. It is clear the south was fighting for slavery. They have blood on their hands.
@DELTA1978THETA ya the union had sucky top generals who didnt play to their advantage until grant came along while the confederates had pretty good top ones
@kexember The U.S. 'Irish Brigade' was actually the NY 69th Volunteer Infantry. Kelly's Irish Brigade refers to the a regiment in the 6th Division of the Missouri State Guard that was under the command of Capt. Joseph Kelly, an Irish immigrant and a grocer in St. Louis in the years before the war. After the Battle of Pea Ridge in 1862, most of the regiment joined the 5th Missouri.
Tiocfaidh Ár Lá. that Proud fenian brotherhood kept that flame burning im sure, until they finally brought their cousins and most powerful tyrant to their knees at that time in 1920, which my grandfatherv fought in
The US was set up as a CONFEDERACY by the "Founding Fathers". Any state could leave if it wished. Unfortunately, Abraham Lincoln (most overrated US in US History) and the Northern States declared an ILLEGAL war on the South. Slavery had nothing to do with it!
Wuuuaaahhh...stuff about the tough irish volunteers... they stand against the black horse southern cavalry. but what the hell have this to do with the gen. lee`s rebells, expect they `re beaten in the end??
great song, but there where also irish brigade in north army, in one battlefield they where charging at each other (cant remember the name of battle)...
i dont speak english very well.but ihave to tell you one single thing : i have a picture of mister jefferson davis in my appartment.beside some other famous people of the modern history.
may god bless the good old south ! may god bless the unforgotten heroes of the greatful south.
all the best, all my good wishes to dixie from germany
@HeFightsForFreedom -- Irish Confederates were not as numerous as those who fought for the Union; an estimated 150,000 Irish served in the Union Army while only 30,000 served in the Confederate Army. Irish Catholics were not as persecuted in the South as in the North, mainly because they were so few in the South that they did not draw attention to themselves as those in the North could not help doing by their sheer numbers.
@WintersWar If the writer is interested he or she should google about the Saint Patrick's Battalion. This was an artillery battalion mostly comprised of Irish deserters from the army of the USA, who during the Mexican American war changed sides because they saw that a poor poverty stricken people were being horribly killed by a modern military force. Most died or were hanged as traitors. I have been to a memorial for them that is in Mexico City.
You are absolutely correct, their grievance being, the realisation of serving a protestant government. For all concerned, this was too much to ally themselves with, considering their background and ideals of a free future. Speaking as an Irishman, I must say though, their desertion was a disgrace.
@WintersWar To be fair, while those statistics do have some merit it's important to keep in mind the differences in the size of the armies and population. The South had a population of 9 million people ( 6 million being free ) and the North had a population of 22 million ( about 800 000 slaves from the border states). So while there were fewer Irish in the South they had fewer people to blend in with.
Loved N & S Carolina when I went there. They're the only States I've been to. Great places and great people. I've been all over Europe but have never met people so polite. Also learnt their side of the story which is rarely told. God bless 'em.
Im a union reenactor and i fought against Kelly and his boys, they're southern but god almighty they are tough to beat on the field even against another irish brigade such as ourselves. My hat's off to their boys and ours!!!
@GladiatorShield Irish immigrants fought on both sides throughout the war. Just because a specific unit of Irishmen has more notoriety specifically doesn't mean there weren't others.
@Kozzy06 They are not all that bad.. please stop it.. I love the south but please dont hate all the blacks. Please, Love thy neighbor as you love God. :)
I wonder why the Irish came to the south for? Maybe the English where on the other side? *HINT HINT* Well, I think they where involved in weapons trade in the west coast. At least it would make a little sense, wouldn't it?
There were proportionately an equal number of Irish who fought for the South and the North. Since more Irish emigrated to the North, more Irish fought for the North, however, the numbers were proportionate. The Irish, it seems, revere and are loyal to, their country, no matter.
I love how people say is "americas enemy" when the highest number of soldiers are from southern states and we grow alot of the cotton grain tobacoo and sugar cane that ppl.use everyday so in other words shut up and y would any yanks listen to a good ol rebel song
i may be not from south usa but i know a call for freedom i from ireland myself have see suffering of my land but the conquers must alway remember "theyre have to build the forts but all we need is the night"
I am a proud American, it is from our many differences that gives us Strength. I would wish to see the whole world united in one Government for peace and prosperity. That aside I would gladly join the Army and burn the South down for daring to fracture our Glorious American Nation. U.S.A
@HolyTerranEmperor beauty song!!... so one goverment in the world? sorry, but sound like a tiranny, monarchy the diferrences with tolerance are us better people, sorry for my english ...greets from Argentina
@XxValleyIndianXx Wait, you mean the "Confederacy" right? Way to show your southern heritage, I believe in the cultured, educated, southern gentlemen. Not the trailer trash you see so often flying the fricking Confederate Naval Jack.
Spoken like a true sheep. The movement was about States rights, the Cotton Gin is what kept slavery in business. If you know you're history you know that the North loved slaves until they didn't need them to build their cities and factories. Then those same northerners realized they couldn't compete with the south's economy due to paid workers and lobbied for imposed abolition and war against the seceding states.
this makes me proud to be Irish respect from empire state of the south Georgia

The US was set up as a CONFEDERACY by the "Founding Fathers". Any state could leave if it wished. Unfortunately, Abraham Lincoln (most overrated US in US History) and the Northern States declared an ILLEGAL war on the South. Slavery had nothing to do with it!

Wasn't the Irish Brigade part of the Union army?
HeFightsForFreedom 2 months ago in playlist Songs of the South
@HeFightsForFreedom -- Irish Confederates were not as numerous as those who fought for the Union; an estimated 150,000 Irish served in the Union Army while only 30,000 served in the Confederate Army. Irish Catholics were not as persecuted in the South as in the North, mainly because they were so few in the South that they did not draw attention to themselves as those in the North could not help doing by their sheer numbers.
WintersWar 2 months ago
@WintersWar If the writer is interested he or she should google about the Saint Patrick's Battalion. This was an artillery battalion mostly comprised of Irish deserters from the army of the USA, who during the Mexican American war changed sides because they saw that a poor poverty stricken people were being horribly killed by a modern military force. Most died or were hanged as traitors. I have been to a memorial for them that is in Mexico City.
cjc1948 2 months ago
@cjc1948
You are absolutely correct, their grievance being, the realisation of serving a protestant government. For all concerned, this was too much to ally themselves with, considering their background and ideals of a free future. Speaking as an Irishman, I must say though, their desertion was a disgrace.
frankeeg83 2 months ago
@WintersWar To be fair, while those statistics do have some merit it's important to keep in mind the differences in the size of the armies and population. The South had a population of 9 million people ( 6 million being free ) and the North had a population of 22 million ( about 800 000 slaves from the border states). So while there were fewer Irish in the South they had fewer people to blend in with.

GladiatorShield 3 months ago
@GladiatorShield Irish immigrants fought on both sides throughout the war. Just because a specific unit of Irishmen has more notoriety specifically doesn't mean there weren't others.
Floridanon407 3 months ago
@GladiatorShield okay.....but the title of this should be Kelly's brigade not the irish brigade.

They have called us rebels and traitors,
But themselves have thrown off that name of late.
They were called it by the English invaders
At home in the eve of ninety eight
The name to us is not a new one though,
Tis one that shall never degrade
And it's true-hearted Irishmen

I wonder why the Irish came to the south for? Maybe the English where on the other side? *HINT HINT* Well, I think they where involved in weapons trade in the west coast. At least it would make a little sense, wouldn't it?
Bidmartinlo 3 months ago
There were proportionately an equal number of Irish who fought for the South and the North. Since more Irish emigrated to the North, more Irish fought for the North, however, the numbers were proportionate. The Irish, it seems, revere and are loyal to, their country, no matter.
TheMacGhabhann 3 months ago
Can someone explain this to me, the Irish Brigade was part of the Union army, Kelly was a union commander, so why is this song about the confederacy?

@Thoran666
