i usualy tell the difference with the stripes on thewater snakes side of the mouth. Moccasins dont have thin stripes on the side of their mouth like that and it is noticable from a good distance away, especially when they stick their heads straight out the water, that's when i know whether to just grab him out the water rapidly or to catch him more catiously if it's a cotton mouth.

I rescued a water snake just yesterday from a shovel. Neighbor chased him up my tree and my bro-in-law called me. I got over there and said "don't kill my snake". Got him out of the tree and into a box and relocated him.

Small head and docile nature made me think it was a water snake and I was convinced after looking at more pics later.

Well there's another senseless killing of a harmless water snake. The above snake was clearly a water snake due to its slender head and body, lack of neck, round pupil. Another name for water moccasin is cotton mouth due to the white lining of its mouth cavity; this is very distinctive, and the cottonmouth (water moccasin) will often coil and display its open mouth. Oh, and it's pronounced moccasin, not moxacin, unless moxacin is some kind of unkown subspecies living only in this guys backyard.

If it is harmless (which they are pretty easy to tell apart in most states since there are only a handful of venemous snakes in the US) then just give it some room and let it wander off.

Also water moccasins are very aggresive and will attack you on sight usually and/or chase you away. I was bit by a moccasin last year while i was fishing, i was walkin downhill next to some boulders an i saw the snake sittin there but i was just goin to walk on by it like i had done before an as soon as i got up next to it, it lunged out an bit me in the calf, i started to back pedal real fast an the snake began to chase me for about 25ft.

A good way to tell if a snake is venemous or not is to look at it's eyes. Round pupils=Harmless. Verticle Pupils=Venomous.
