shrinking 100 gigs would be crazy for me cuz im running a laptop that has 150 gigs and 100 free gigs LOL and way would it work if i just burned ubuntu to a disc and did it that way? thanks!
When I go to disk management I can't see any unallocated space and when I go to Shrink the windows partition It's showing 0 space to shrink... despite having some 300GB free.
The swap file is used to page memory to disk. Essentially it creates virtual memory so that programs don't crash immediately if you use up more memory than your system has. This is almost exactly the same thing as Windows pagefile.
This made it so much simpler, I asked a friends about it and he gave me this long response where everything was utterly confusing and I didn't understand any of it. This made it so much easier. Thank you.
can you help me? i have a 250gb hdd and i want to shrink 20gb of it for another os, but it will only let me shrink 466mb, i already have a recovery drive that is 12gb, what do i do?
A custom built rig, um, E2160 processor, some cheap ram (2GB of it), a gigabyte GA-945GZM-S2 motherboard, the NZXT hush case, and a cheap 500GB HDD. Oh, and a 8600GT GPU.
Why? If you mean OS, i have vista home premium. It doesnt support dynamic disks, so sometimes that stops me from trying to partition, other times it just continues to load indefinately, for hours maybe. And i've tried it on the command prompt, still doesnt work there.
When I'm portioning the drive what exactly do I do? I click on free space, create new partition, choose 20GB for use for the Ubuntu, from there what do I do?
Thanks. Can you tell me if i wanted to go back to vista like single boot how do i do it should i just delete the allocated space im not being very clear, i mean if i wanted just vista on no other OS should i just delete the partitioned part of the hard drive if you understand me ?
i installed it on my acer aspire 5735z and ubuntu loads good, but when i start vista it says its restoring to factory defaults but never gets anywhere. any help would be good
Ill give you some credit but the random trailing off on other subjects is a no no. Other then that not to bad but you should of given people links on where to get the iso's for ubuntu and also a way to repair longhorn if it goes south.
Hey thanks man! One thing, I installed it and I am on Firefox and it's like the stuff surrounding Firefox is like huge and zoomed in. How do I change it so I have it like a regular one?
I had to manually input the boot loader settings on my setup. Windows must be there first or you WILL have to manually input the boot loader settings. What to do if you have drivers missing? no mention of unpacking the data to a directory in Root? No com line interface? I think most Linux users would agree that this "Instruction" is more than a little lacking. Especially for a 9 minute video.
when going to shink the allocated space it is telling me the max i can shrink it is 6.3gb even though i have 59.3 gb available on my hard drive. i defragged my computer, but im still coming up with the same thing. whats that all about?
Hey, do you have aim or skype? If so can you contact me to help me. When I go to shrink it only offers 7GB's of shirnk... I only have a 1 250gb harddrive with about 120GB's of free space (just deleted all my videos lol :)) Well contact me on aim: IVIonsterAddict (same as my youtube account so just copypasta)
You can choose guided, you do not have to choose manual. If you use guided it will automatically install on the largest contiguous space (ie the space cleared earlier when partioning).
u men got a question i know how to do this lol but umm just asking when u installed ubuntu did it mess up all ur drivers like aduio video internet or it dint lol im 14 holla back cous im start downloading my ubuntu iso later
Heh, when I was 14 I got my first PC. And back then I was only crapping around with dos. I gotta say I'm pretty impressed how you handle this at such a young age. :D
Ideally, even though you dont *need* the swap partition in today's day of OS's (a swap file is just as good), your partition should really be as big as the amount of RAM you have in your machine. This way, you can make full use of the extended address space, and the suspend-to-disk feature of the Linux OS, where your RAM contents are dumped to the swap for later use.
See the Ubuntu forums for setting up a swap file after installation.
I got to the bit where u boot from CD to get onto the ubuntu set-up but it just goes straight into vista even when I select startup from CD/DVD drive, any ideas?
You may need to go into your BIOS and set the boot device priority to boot from CDROM first. It will only move to the next boot device if there is a failure with the boot on the one before it.
no, but some major programs work in a windows emulator called wine and although not all programs work in wine more and more support for more programs is happening all the time
no with the grub boot loader or any bootloader for that matter you will never have to press anything just the up, down, and enter keys to select the os to boot
It's simple now! Just go to ubuntu (dot) com and download the installer for Windows, and you simply got dual boot!
