  • It's simple now! Just go to ubuntu (dot) com and download the installer for Windows, and you simply got dual boot!

  • shrinking 100 gigs would be crazy for me cuz im running a laptop that has 150 gigs and 100 free gigs LOL and way would it work if i just burned ubuntu to a disc and did it that way? thanks!

  • Thank's

  • thanks ;) it worked.

  • is ubuntu linux

  • If i decide in the future i no longer want to dual boot is it possible to take ubuntu off?

  • can they see eachothers filesystem.

  • im not sure, linux can read ntfs and fat filesystems but i dont think windows can read ext drives :(

  • yes

  • can i run linux without lag on a noteboook?

  • @codicer1 yes

  • dual boot in a netbook. 60 gb hd, half of that to linux. good idea or bad?

  • I got mine to work but im using Ubunu 9.04 and Windows Vista Ultimate SP1... but the Vistas resulution sucks on my acer aspire one

  • Damn, I can't even get passed the first step.

When I go to disk management I can't see any unallocated space and when I go to Shrink the windows partition It's showing 0 space to shrink... despite having some 300GB free.

  • what does the swap area do and why we need it?

  • The swap file is used to page memory to disk. Essentially it creates virtual memory so that programs don't crash immediately if you use up more memory than your system has. This is almost exactly the same thing as Windows pagefile.

  • I am using a laptop, and I have 2 HDD. So can I use the other for ubuntu?

  • yes

  • Do i must using partition at me second HDD? Or can I leave it just how it is.

  • If your booting off the second hard drive no, you just need to set it \as the boot drive. but partions are always a good idea

  • lol im quad booting linux, mac, xp and vista. and im about to install windows 7 aswell

  • wow that is pretty cool. I did not even know that was possible.

  • Any amount of OSs is technically possible.

  • Please someone tell me if I can run off of my External hard drive!!

  • yea u can i did it

  • yes, you can for sure

  • no, i would asume not, unless your computer could boot form a

  • I think so, you need to change your BIOS on a pc.

  • yes you can

  • Of course! Just make sure it's in as your main disk when you wanna boot up.

  • nice thxz, in future it will be useful =]

  • This made it so much simpler, I asked a friends about it and he gave me this long response where everything was utterly confusing and I didn't understand any of it. This made it so much easier. Thank you.

  • YEAH TY FOR VID

  • can you help me? i have a 250gb hdd and i want to shrink 20gb of it for another os, but it will only let me shrink 466mb, i already have a recovery drive that is 12gb, what do i do?

  • download easus partition master.

  • This will work for all versions of ubuntu for all who are asking.

  • does this work with ubuntu 9.04?

  • this video was extremely helpful for me- I'm not incredibly good with computers but this made everything very easy to understand :)

  • Thank you for the help, it worked great for me

  • it sau\ys 0 mb are available to be shrinked! wat do i do?

  • i think wubi would be lot easier :)

  • dude your computer is slow. must be a Pentium D

what it cost 300 dollars no offensive just sayin and your bios is pretty old lookin

  • Does this work with Ubuntu 8.10?

  • how do i do it its a hp laptop compaq 1 it h8s it

  • can u just use the cd without installing it ubuntu

  • yes u can run it on the cd

  • i want 2 switch between the 2 wen i take my laptop in school i can tease my i.t. teacher and the head of i.t. lol

  • mate i couldnt see ur computer screen like the text and stuff lolz

  • haha your comp sux.

  • Great tutorial. However, my HDD doesn't want to shrink it's volume (crappy, cheap HDD wtf!) so i think i'll just use wubi. Still, great guide.

  • outrageousmayo what kind of computer did you buy

  • A custom built rig, um, E2160 processor, some cheap ram (2GB of it), a gigabyte GA-945GZM-S2 motherboard, the NZXT hush case, and a cheap 500GB HDD. Oh, and a 8600GT GPU.

Why? If you mean OS, i have vista home premium. It doesnt support dynamic disks, so sometimes that stops me from trying to partition, other times it just continues to load indefinately, for hours maybe. And i've tried it on the command prompt, still doesnt work there.

  • When I'm portioning the drive what exactly do I do? I click on free space, create new partition, choose 20GB for use for the Ubuntu, from there what do I do?

  • Thanks. Can you tell me if i wanted to go back to vista like single boot how do i do it should i just delete the allocated space im not being very clear, i mean if i wanted just vista on no other OS should i just delete the partitioned part of the hard drive if you understand me ?

  • I have a 250gb hd, and it will only let me partition 10mb.. Any ideas?

  • why does ur computer has screwy noises??

  • It's the microphone you retard.

  • i installed it on my acer aspire 5735z and ubuntu loads good, but when i start vista it says its restoring to factory defaults but never gets anywhere. any help would be good

  • With a computer like that, invest in a sick monitor like me. Dell 17" are just too old now.

  • This is a bit off-topic, but why are is your computer disconnected from the internet?

  • Because the internet is disgusting, an abomination, the death of humanity?

  • No, Republicans are. Count it!

  • if you have a ubuntu 8.10 live disk you can do all this from the disk just put it in your drive and let it do it for you easy.

  • This is nice i been running it off a flash drive :) but i want to switch it to my 2nd hdd.

  • yea, flash drives might be slower to transfer data from the drive to pc so it could have effects on your ubuntu os speed.

  • look my video , much easier..

  • can i install ubuntu on a formatted recovery partition of my hard drive? plz i need help!!

  • Yes, but that is risky. Make sure you have a backup of your files and a windows installation CD in case it fails, otherwise you got a broken system

  • Is dual booting reformating ur computer??

  • partitioning.

  • nice

  • Ill give you some credit but the random trailing off on other subjects is a no no. Other then that not to bad but you should of given people links on where to get the iso's for ubuntu and also a way to repair longhorn if it goes south.

  • Wow, thanks for posting this video. It was easy to follow, and I had no trouble dual booting Vista with Ubuntu. =D

  • downloading the ISO now, thanks a bunch

  • Hey thanks man! One thing, I installed it and I am on Firefox and it's like the stuff surrounding Firefox is like huge and zoomed in. How do I change it so I have it like a regular one?

  • good work

  • well done

  • Hey i have a laptop with two HDD's would i just be able to install ubuntu on the second HDD?

  • ya u can, but it will delete everything on whichever hard drive u choose.

  • but could you try speaking more clearly and a little slower?

  • Thats a pretty sketchy dual boot.

You assume ALOT with this vid.

I had to manually input the boot loader settings on my setup. Windows must be there first or you WILL have to manually input the boot loader settings. What to do if you have drivers missing? no mention of unpacking the data to a directory in Root? No com line interface? I think most Linux users would agree that this "Instruction" is more than a little lacking. Especially for a 9 minute video.

  • when going to shink the allocated space it is telling me the max i can shrink it is 6.3gb even though i have 59.3 gb available on my hard drive. i defragged my computer, but im still coming up with the same thing. whats that all about?

  • thanks so much for this video

  • my wireless internet doesnt work on it??

  • you probably have a broadcom card, a mess to deal with. search "ndiswrapper" in google

  • i did but i didnt work..

  • @soubannarath my wireless card is an intel something 5000 so i had to search for it on my own and download it

  • If i use Ubuntu 7.04.1 can it be done the same way?? thanks

  • you mean 8.04? if so, yes

  • Hey, do you have aim or skype? If so can you contact me to help me. When I go to shrink it only offers 7GB's of shirnk... I only have a 1 250gb harddrive with about 120GB's of free space (just deleted all my videos lol :)) Well contact me on aim: IVIonsterAddict (same as my youtube account so just copypasta)

  • You computer seems slow for that beast

  • The screen recorder messed it up when i was in vista.

  • When u load ubuntu from the disk its slow no matter what machine ur using

  • well, even in vista... Mine is faster

  • well maybe cuz your computer sucks

  • You can choose guided, you do not have to choose manual. If you use guided it will automatically install on the largest contiguous space (ie the space cleared earlier when partioning).

  • you can, but i did it once on accident, and it claimed the whole drive, using manual is more of a...... precaution

  • ahhh. I forgot to say good video by the way. It is people like you who make linux possible. Def. subscribing.

  • thanks.

  • Thanks a million, I just installed ubuntu on my dell inspron 1520 and followed your instructions to the t. Everything is working great. thanks again.

  • cool, how do you like it

  • u men got a question i know how to do this lol but umm just asking when u installed ubuntu did it mess up all ur drivers like aduio video internet or it dint lol im 14 holla back cous im start downloading my ubuntu iso later

  • no, it affects nothing in vista

  • Heh, when I was 14 I got my first PC. And back then I was only crapping around with dos. I gotta say I'm pretty impressed how you handle this at such a young age. :D

  • heh, DOS, i still play a dos game occasionally, havent in like a year no though

  • how old are you dude?

  • I'm 13

  • After I pressed Install Ubuntu I gets the loadingbar, and after that the screen get black with a white "_" blinking in the left corner, Need help!

  • Go to the ubuntu discussion boards and search for similar errors with you computer model.

  • I have tried but it seems like no one else have this problem, Maybe you could link to a good ubuntu forum?

  • does your vista stuff and info get deleted by doing this?

  • No, the only way you can mess up Vista is by messing up in the partition editor.

  • did u shrink the C drive?

  • no he partitioned it, like taking 1 piece of wood and cutting it into two secitions but in two sizes of whatever choice...

  • In vista, yes.

  • can you extend the system drive?

  • What? explain, as in extend vista or extend ubuntu once you install it

  • i mean like extend xp while u ur on xp

  • At 5:29 what option did u pick?

  • Your PC is to slow to be running Vista.

  • LOL thats a custom made gaming computer.

  • thanks :]

  • Ideally, even though you dont *need* the swap partition in today's day of OS's (a swap file is just as good), your partition should really be as big as the amount of RAM you have in your machine. This way, you can make full use of the extended address space, and the suspend-to-disk feature of the Linux OS, where your RAM contents are dumped to the swap for later use.

See the Ubuntu forums for setting up a swap file after installation.

    Nice tutorial

  • Thanks and yes i know you dont *need* it, but it is always good to have at least alittle space

  • Just glad I could provide any advice :)

  • thanks

  • fast talker.. -.-

  • and thats easier to dual boot vista and ubuntu then vista and xp :)

  • lol i wanna get linux so i can play mta!

  • I do like it Thanks man

  • I got to the bit where u boot from CD to get onto the ubuntu set-up but it just goes straight into vista even when I select startup from CD/DVD drive, any ideas?

  • maybe the cd you burned is corrupted....

  • You may need to go into your BIOS and set the boot device priority to boot from CDROM first. It will only move to the next boot device if there is a failure with the boot on the one before it.

Try that and see how it works for you.

  • can u download itunes and all those other programs for ubuntu

  • no, but some major programs work in a windows emulator called wine and although not all programs work in wine more and more support for more programs is happening all the time

  • can i run limewire on ubuntu

  • no, but you can run bit torrent

  • you CAN run limewire in UBUNTU!!! i am running it as we speak!!!

i recently got ubuntu...had to burn the ISO file to a disk....was a bit of a pain, but luckily it worked out for me.

    total after shrink 140714

what do i do? how much do i shrink?

  • hmmmmmm... you may nede to delete some things off your hard drive, as 1.2 gigs is not enough space.

  • Good Job Jeffrey !

This is way better than the classic tutorials.

I hope you'll improve your website as you learn HTML. You're the best help I can get as I'm young like you and dumb like everyone else.

  • Thank you and yes i am going to update my site soon its just with school i dont have much time.......

  • hey how do u get the "live cd"

  • u go to the website and then itll take 4-10 weeks for them to send it to u

  • yes or you can download the iso file from their website

  • :/ I cant see clearly the vid but whats the different using wubi and this?

  • wubi is for the new Ubuntu 8.04 but that should be seen as a temporary setup to try ubuntu before doing this.

  • Excellent video, Jeffery!

  • thanks!!!

  • whats ur sn on halo? and what map do you normally use?

  • My name is usually just Jeffery but i think im going to change it..... BLOODGULCH

  • yes

  • nice presentation man!

  • thanks!!!

  • i got 400 gigs for ubuntu and 363 gigs for vista

  • is this work with windows xp

  • it will, but you will have to use the xp disk to make a new partition then you will have to format that partition to the ext3 file system

  • i hope mine works cuz i used up all my free lives already.

  • on my computer it says that theres 22 gb free but it only lets me shrink about 1400 mb WTF

  • hmmmm have you tried not using the arrows, and is there 22gb free or is that the total drive?

  • yeah dont worry i fixed it all i had to do was defrag my page files

  • when at the starting screen do you press F9 to tell the com. where to boot from

  • no with the grub boot loader or any bootloader for that matter you will never have to press anything just the up, down, and enter keys to select the os to boot

  • thank you
