You know, for a camera that was less than $20, that was really cool. I've been looking for something really cheap and easy to get on-board video of my rocket flights, this looks like the best, easiest solution. Thanks so much for posting this. Have you done this with larger, higher flying rockets?
@LeosLeisureSite we did a tutorial on our channel how you can turn that annoying date stamp off with a hardware hack if you have the 720x480 camera. We also show how to disable it in software on the HD version (type #11).
do you think i could put the camera in the nose, and reflect the image downward with a mirror? Or would the weight on the top make the rocket to unstable? Im trying to avoid putting it on the outside because i worry it will upset the balance. I could put it inside the rocket tube by the base, but i worry the back blast will destroy the camera. Thanks, Scott
We have the exact same camera and tried strapping it to a "sizzler" estes rocket, but the thing just went into a death spiral immediately after liftoff. Any suggestions? We put it near the base, so you'd think it wouldn't negatively affect the balance.
Unfortunately by placing the camera at the base you moved the center of gravity with it. That's why it became unstable. I would suggest you place the camera in the center of your rocket next time.
This is a cool video!!! Where did you hit the camera? It would be good to use on the rocket my classmates and I are making in our aerospace engineering class at school
Very nice showing how easy it is to get cool videos of rocket flights. Believe it or not, I'm considering using "this technology" for a space shot, minus the taping to the outside part ( :
so im conducting an experiment with an Athena Estes rocket with a B6-4 engine and the same camera attached. The purpose of the experiment is to find the drag force of the camera, however ive noticed that there is little deflection from a vertical flight path in your videos (except on the last on). Was there wind, or even a slight wind, countering the deflection? or did you adjust the launch angle?
The flight on the video "Solaris-Flugtag 2010" had some wind, thus making the rocket arch in to it a bit. I'm sure it would have been less If I had placed the cam more to the center of the rocket.
Launch angle was always vertical.
It is important that the cam be taped on the top accordingly so that the drag is at it's possible minimum.
Also make sure the launch rod is always clean so that the friction with the launch lug is at it's minimum.
Does the drag and weight from the camera affect the flight at all? Seems like it would make the rocket want to veer off to the camera side, though it doesn't look like it did in the video?
Very cool! I used to play with rockets in the 90's, but there were no key chain cams back then. I think you could get a 4mb compact flash memory card and that would cost about $20 in itself! Horray technology!
Nice footage! I just got my Key Chain today and it has very decent quality. I made a bet with some dude that it wouldn't be shit (i seen its vid quality before i purchased) and i told him that i would post a vid when i got it. Got mine for $10.
if anyone has the estes ELECTRON BEAM black starter , how hard do you have to push in the safety key and how long should it take for the light to go on????
LeosLeisureSite - I am thinking you should use the biggest engine you can due to the added weight. Also you should use the smallest delay for the ejection charge. Try a C6-0. It will give you the most power and most amount of thrust to get you up there, although it will have a little shorter burn time. As soon as the burn is over the parachute will deploy as there is zero delay. This will get your chute out before the rocket starts building speed which will maximize your video time.
very nice work ,back in the day we were trying to shoe-horn hi8 cams into our rockets , thanks to the wonders of modern tech i'm currently re-fitting one of my old birds with a modern hi-res spy cam/dvr and reloadable motor i'll post if everything works out ok , once again good job.
I got a couple (for R/C purposes). 1st pair took 5 weeks around the xmas season. The 2nd pair took about 2 weeks. Both from Hong Kong. price can't be beat. Don't use High Capacity memory to be on safe side. Nice footage. I like the 2nd one, was very clear.

@szelle63
Putting the camera in the nose cone is possible. It really depends on the rocket.
I've flown so many rockets, big and small with this little cam mounted to the side and have never had a failure.
I recommend placing the cam in the center of the rocket to ensure the most stable flights. Avoid placing the cam at the bottom of the rocket.
You do not need a weight on the other side of the rocket to balance it out. That has been my experiance.

Go to eBay and look for "Key Chain Camera".
Be sure the version is a 720x480 Video @ 30FPS. They cost about $15 US shipping included.
Or better yet look for the HD version which goes for around $40 US.

Try to get the new HD version cam. Resolution is at 1280 x 720 @ 30FPS.
Also consider testing if these cams if they can stand the cold and the use of a seperate power supply.
