  • When I saw Joe Pass live, he was in his 80's at the time. Surely he was able to stand up if he wanted to. He sat down.... then asked the soundman to turn the volume down (opener was too loud for his taste).... and then he proceeded to completely blow me and most of the audience away.

After the gig I saw some dude outside whining: "how boring! why didn't he come in swinging from a cable like David Lee Roth in 'Panama'? i want a refund!"

    Lighten the fuck up...

  • @JonP1961 That story is pretty impossible, Joe Pass died when he was 65

  • @boertush

fair enough. this would have been early 80's when i caught him and he looked fairly tired by the end of the gig.

  • @JonP1961 haha owned

  • Sounds kind of noisy to me, musically no that interesting. I do Love Kev's playing, but not this so much

  • Hoopermazing - most of us can play without a pick, it's part of every pros' performance bag Banjo roles are expected and required when playing without a plectrum. . What impressed me was his speed, accuracy and endurance. Sometimes my fingers stiffen up and hurt when I finger pick too long.

  • He does it without a pick...fantastic!

  • @guitgeo - He is a fantastic guitarist, but surely you must realize that there is nothing unusual about playing guitar without a pick.

  • The guys burning, who cares if he`s running across the stage or pulling shapes.Close your eyes and groove with Kevin...

  • i like kevin and all, but why the hell does he always sit down? soo drab. stand up & move. unless of course he can't (i'm not sure)

  • i prefer sitting too:P

i guess its what youre used to.

  • yea thats cool. I sit too for certain songs but i'm not the focal point all the time. to me its an energy thing. like for a ballad type tune. if i see the lead guy sitting all night i get bored.

  • The way he's sitting says a lot to me. It says, "Me or my actions are not to the main focus... the music/creations are the main focus." I like that.

  • I feel you man I really do. But the main reason why our more "artistic" forms of music don't get the attention they deserve, is because people want a show. They want interaction.

When the front man is sitting, its just not exciting. I believe our job is to entertain truthfully and to our best ability. I love Kevin's work, his live work just isn't worth my time or money when he's gonna just sit there. I remember getting on katz in my own group. Like "yo man, move around or something"!

  • The only person you can depend on pleasing is yourself. If you're in music to please other people, you're in it for the wrong reason. It sounds selfish, but really, If you stop trying to make other people happy and just concentrate on what you want, other people will come to you.

  • Alright so if i came to your show and told you "man you played great, but i felt like it was just you up there. I didn't feel like you were here with us." what are you gonna tell me "yea man, I play for myself... "?

Well, speak for yourself playa. Me, I share my feelings with the people through music, with the HOPES that they all like it. Yea i know everybody won't like it, hell a lot of people don't like my work. But enough do, to keep me working and climbing.

  • Why'd you come to my show if you don't like how I play?

  • Cause I heard your record and I wanted to experience the show! duh lol

  • So then shut up and listen to what I have to say, haha. If I'm playing a show, I'm there to create and interact with my fellow band members. Everyone who comes to see us is merely a witness. If I'm busy concentrating on you, the music will be sacrificed. It also could lead to being a sellout, since you keep making music for more and more people, having to reach a more general audience (Ei; Chris Botti, Dave Koz). I make music for musicians. I like to be challenged when I play or compose.

  • Ahh, thats the language I was waiting for! And I quote, "I make music for musicians." Nothing wrong with that.

I used to be a fusion kat, trying to write & play the most difficult stuff... "challenging myself". But it stop having meaning to me when i noticed that less and less people could understand what I was saying. The reason I tour is to communicate with people from the stage and for 2-3 hours and be in one mind.

  • So I started to think "what is the point of talking, if no one understands the words?" At that point I decided that I was going to finish the tour with my group and end it. Now my focus is not what notes I play, how many there are or how fast I play them, but on what each not means to me and conveying that to the listener. I think Chris or Dave tapped into the idea of POP. Which is fine too. I don't dig it, but I don't dig playing fusion or Straight ahead like i used to either.

  • We are arguing the same perspective.

  • According to that logic we can raise the entertainment value by throwing out piano and drum stools as well. Keith Jarret might be on to something there. You are a dick.

  • @trwylekat - Wes Montgomery sat and played. Joe Pass sat and played. Django Reinhardt sat and played. Charlie Christian sat and played. Shall I go on, stupid?

  • And they were all great guitarist, just like Kevin. But that doesn't erase the fact that sitting on a stool for a 2 hour concert is boring as hell, it lacks entertainment value, there is no wow factor. If i'm paying $50 a ticket, at least stand up, if you can of course. Mike Stern, Al Di Meola, Alan Holdsworth all stand... Shall I go on, stupid?

  • @trwylekat I

ts about the music...not a circus act.

you wanna see someone jump around go and watch gymnastic tumbling.

  • @KillinDaWelfareMCs Personally I want to see a performance, not a recital. But You know what, it doesn't matter. This is what makes the entertainment industry what it is. Some people like this... others like that. Its whatever, Kevin is a great guy and a very great player. I would see him in a club like Ronnie Scotts, but in an arena or theater... its just not enough for me. Thats just me. You and everyone else has the right to their own opinion.

  • Kevin,

    Eres el mejor.

    Yo the quieo mucho.

    F.

  • burn a little ....i wish the sound was better....

  • Love Kevin playing...
