  • 1:52 thanks for answering the ultimate question of my childhood

  • yume nikki in a nutshell

  • research montauk project if u wanna know bout brain amplifiers

  • as long as dream is beneficial that's fine....but sometimes nightmare really makes you feel like you are in hell

  • true, when i was 9, I had a dream that my family turned into wolves and ripped my head off and ate my entrails.

  • wow, it's like talking to sheldon, spock and ted mosby at the same time!

  • in inside of it

  • The kids thing isn't so true.. I've never had a dream about animals being a bad guy or whatever. All my dreams are more like random stuff... For example, I was in an army airplane with a Portal 2 laser redirecting cube and then the plane exploded and I was blasted into a jail cell with the cube then it teleported me to the Eiffel Tower in France and we had to climb up to the top without falling and dieing and then we skydived... BTW when I mean climb up, I mean inside it, like there was a mounta

  • Mc donalds will put ads in our dreams

  • What a load !

  • omg so tru about the kids one! i had a dream once when i was like 5 that i was gonna get eaten by a gorilla. and i still remember it!

  • Silly. We dream because when we sleep our souls enter the Fade.

  • So I'm ready for a Mexican wresler to get hit by a train? Or when all the things in my room come alive and try to kill me? "two childhood dreams XD"

  • when i was a kid i \once had a dream my mom gave birth to a octacpus or how ever u spell it n i was running from it in the hospital lmaooo! i cant belive i rmember that dream weird

  • There are also things saying children dream about natural disasters....

  • I had a dream that I was going to watch this video.

  • i also want some info..it has happened to me, for other people i dont know but when i dream few days or months later it becomes real..has it happened to you? ...why does this happen

  • @manuelm90 it could be psychic tendensies or precognition. in other words, you can see the future.

  • @manuelm90 The Same thing happens to me ALL THE TIME. I thought I was the only one. I've experienced deja vu so many times already I just shrug them off now telling myself "Alright I saw this happen already, but whatever." So found any info since you asked? I'd like to know myself.

  • I had a dream about Killing Floor :D

  • I think the reason we dream isn't as profound a question as we're making it out to be. Consciousness is a product of higher brain function the brain never stops or "turns off" so we dream but since we have no external stimuli during our unconscious state the brain calls upon previous experiences.

  • now that's FOOD for thought.... now go dream about it.

  • 1:09 titties!!!

  • it can be used for both emotions and memory. it doesnt have to be one or the other. in my opinion if you try and translate your dreams by the symbols the dream gives you, it can help you with whats going on in your life currently. Aswell, if you say you dont have dreams, just remember you allways do, just sometimes you cant remember them aswell

  • wat about wet dreams?

  • still doesn't address why we are witness to dreams, only attempts to explain why we have them. the dreams need not be experienced to "reap the dream's benefits" as this video suggests.

  • I found this video very interesting. I can help translate this video to spanish. Just drop me a message.

  • LOL, Freud pulled that idea out of his ass. I see what they did there.

  • I often dream that I ride around everywhere & anywhere on a bicycle and always with the front wheel up in the air in a "wheelie" position. Riding only upon the back wheel, I go over or through any obstacle that I encounter & I enjoy having these dreams... riding wherever I please

I was riding only 2 nights ago

  • 0:05 BOOBIES!!!

  • So I guess I have been mentally preparing for the end of the wold/ a zombie apocalypse... or the rest of the time pimp slapping my former manager. XD

  • @drakewingfire I so see the world being saved by someone pimp slapping zombies now. Please sir...make that happen.

  • Drugs make us dream

  • Car keys on toast. Brilliant.

  • LOFL they put a patch on the wolf

  • Sooo inception anyone?

  • i could have said all of this its just a load of guesses

  • i cant wait until they can record our dreams!

  • @KiranGlitch Actually, that's a scary prospect, because the moment they can record our dreams, they will be able to record our thoughts, which will mean everything about you will be an open book. Such a thing could be easily abused by unscrupulous & invasive governments, destroying our last vestiges of privacy. Wearing a tin-foil hat might be the only way to keep them out of your head.

  • @dafttool yes but a law might come out that protects dreams from being used for inappropriate uses, and you would have to give your permission for someone to record your dreams, you can't just let then record every single dream you dream....

  • @KiranGlitch You don't seem to understand the repercussions of this technology you envision. America is the land of the free, a nation of laws, generally well-respected, yet is also where we now torture and wire-tap and snoop on your computer. If we can read your dreams, we will be able to read your mind. Who cares what your dreams are? It's your actual thoughts they will one day be after. Technology like this will make waterboarding obsolete, as well as the privacy to have a mind of your own.

  • @KiranGlitch id rather they not........

  • @KiranGlitch That may likely be in the near future. Artificial neural networks can now reconstruct fuzzy images from firings in one's occipital lobe in the brain.

  • @KiranGlitch recording and reviewing dreams? welcome in the reign of Chaos, because is what common dreams are.

  • @KiranGlitch

I really would like to avoid the source of the "morning wood" Dreams should stay personal...

  • @KiranGlitch

Yes yes yes every time I have a really good vivid unique dream I FORGET IT and i'm like :(

I know we'll one day be able to record our dreams hell we'll even be able to have shared dreams like a forum online or xbox live

    Dream Trollz O___O

  • @KiranGlitch big brother is surely on to that one

  • @KiranGlitch why do you watch porno in your dreams?

  • @KiranGlitch I can't wait until they can make our dreams a reality.

  • @wo0obly funny..while your dreaming..that is your..reality!!!

  • @danksmokaz Well it's not really I have no real control and it's not physical either. I meant a reality as in everyone can see it.

  • Love this. Knowledge truly is beautiful and fascinating.

  • dreaming is the dress rehearsal for the after life, which in my opinion is a non physical world. Perhaps what we perceive as reality is in fact us dreaming of a physical world in our own afterlives.

  • Why is this styled like something for a five-year-old?

Though I did enjoy "but Freud's methodology left much to be desired" paired with an animation of him pulling a lightbulb (idea) out of his ass.

  • I think kids dream of villainous animals because half of freaking kids toys and cartoons feature anthropomorphised animals - and deep down they know this is freakish and wrong.

  • It's simple - we have to sleep because otherwise, we'd would burn too much energy and have no time to recover after a hard days work. Dreams are just simulations our brains put us through so we're doing something useful during that time. People who dream were selected for because it provides utility. There, end of discussion.

  • @coolman9999uk End of discussion folks, his theory fills in a few puzzles he's got it down. Coolman9999uk, definantly an intelligent name to go down in history...

  • @coolman9999uk you realize you don't stop 'burning' energy once you go to sleep, right? Brain activity doesn't run free of fuel.

  • @wirtlo I think you didn't read my post properly. I said END of discussion.

  • @wirtlo maybe that is why i like eating sugar type foods before bed.

  • i havent watched the video yet, but this is a subject i feel i know well. I believe we dream for many reasons, a nightmare can help us feel better when awake aswell as prepare us for real life shocking events w/e they might be. to avoid the "dear in head lights" effect that can cost that life, it builds the freight and flight response. when not in actual shock we respond accurately, with confidence due to the brain having experienced far worse"nightmare"

  • Comment removed

  • human conscience inhibits the rate in which we except and process information, example, when asleep we can literally dream a whole life time in seconds! i have experienced this myself in which an alarm clock would sound (real life). in dream, i dreamed whole events leading right up to the alarm clock waking me up in my dream, then waking up in real life, hope that made sense, i feel it possible the brain being able to think at speed of light (subconsciously), but first, conscious blocks this.

  • in summery, "good" dreams promotes procreation (of the gene), "bad" dreams promotes survival, i do not believe people who claim they solve problems when asleep, however dreams of flying (not in plane) can promote inventions! which is survival unless of coarse you fear flying.

    problem solving requires conscious effort.

nature makes sure (when asleep) that all our time here is not wasted. we live on average 80 years, 1/ 3rd of that we sleep, so 26.666 years we sleep in life.

  • dmt?

  • I have dreams of solving physics problems.

  • i just want to dream about that boob lady all the time

  • why i don't dream anymore :'<

  • OMG That is SO awesome!!! I guess I will never have an outragous dream, cause I never hit REM! lol But I guess that does explain why I had a dream about college lol

  • So is visualization (acting out/practicing in your mind an upcoming real event), in effect, a waking dream?

My dreams typically consist of things I've been thinking about the during the day, bits and pieces of thought thrown into a blender on high and played out as a movie in my mind. Weird stuff.

  • STAR WOLF

  • .... WOW. A lot of this stuff is REALLY wrong!!

  • @SpaceMasterRahel How? What is?

  • @Wilzaza well, all the weird sexual stuff for one.

Not that it isn't a brilliant video though! :)

  • lol "things that can be put on toast"

  • this makes me sleep and dream

  • blind people dream

  • last dream I had the sun came to close to the earth, and to avoid being burned alive I guided a group of people over a fence where we hid in the shade.

  • @mrboxleytheonly government brainwashing of global warming must be getting to you... Now im not saying that global warming isnt real but government hysteria and the constant one way propaganda certainly is.

And before anyone attacks me on being a conspiracy theorist why dont they look at the "solutions" proposed and the details of how they "work".

  • You lie! Dreams are sometimes things that come up from our brain randomly but they can also be messages transmitted to us by angels.

  • WOOT! GO ONEIRONAUTS!

  • I had a sexual dream about Marylin Monroe.

    and I don't why lolz

  • Freud was a nut - no one understands dreams - we may understand dreams more when we understand parallel universe theory better

  • why the hell are they making mistakes?

REM sleep is NOT* deep sleep.

all dreams are is the rearranging of thoughts and everything. coincidentally, almost everything in our minds was put there by stimulus from the outside (things we see, hear etc.) during the rearrangement of those impulses can propagate the signal and parts of ur brain not yet "asleep" process that as incoming info. that's why it only happens on ur way to deep sleep. (REM/stage B4 deep sleep) when part of ur brain is still awake

  • I want to record my dream at 1080p or bigger, and project it at the big screen for watching with friends (if the dream isn't too personal:P).

  • sensationalist pseudoscience drivel

  • this is so inception

  • 1:49.. idiot u have a shotgun.. stop looking around and KILL SOME ZOMBIES ALREADY!

  • @lagas5

    I was like... SHOOOOT!!!

and then I see your comment it made me laugh so hard... thanks

  • Dreaming is Defragging the brain...

  • Pirate Hedgehog!

  • More of these!

  • Anyone write their dream soon after waking?

  • @Shaunt1 I try to. I found I dream a lot about zombie/zombie related events.

  • TITS!!!

  • @sukiwang oh shut up its art..... stop being so perverted

  • reminds me of the film vanilla sky, i think i might be the only person ive met who liked it.... what about reoccurring dreams. very annoying they are...

  • Here's what I know about dreams, that, I can't control them, and that I don't dream often. It somewhat ticks me off.

And the times I do dream I have stupid nightmares. And I'd really rather be dreaming about something I like, that something I dislike.

  • Finally a video that will bring us closer to curing...

    INCEPTION

  • Inception

  • superperfoondo on the early eve of your morn.

  • I never dream

  • it's only the REM dreams we remember, but yes we're dreaming at all stages of sleep.

    icem300 ...watch Paprika.

  • 2:03 Can't let you dream that, StarFox

  • whenever i dream its always something that deeply moves me. The most prominent dreams i remember are ones that always involve love, but not plain and simple. Theres always a longing for something unreachable and some great desire for it.

  • Great video. Keep on dreaming!

  • religious persons theory on dreams: a dream is just god talking to you and telling you what to do nothing more and if you say otherwise you are going to go to hell and burn for all eternity!

rational thinking non-religious person: dreams are the subconscious thinking of a persons desires problem solving and thoughts of a random occurrence we should study this to better understand it.

    which is the bad person?

  • people can try to analyze these things all they want, but honestly i don't think we'll never know the whole truths abt dreams and other things we baffle over like that through just scientific research. maybe we aren't even supposed to know at all.

  • This is how new scientist videos should be. Not (necessarily) animated, but informative, well narrated and capable of standing on their own as opposed to being simple imagery for their website's articles.

  • Some dreams are also excuses to stay asleep.. ever had that dream where you wake up and get ready for work( or school ) and then when you do wake up you relieze your late?

Stupid brain making me look bad at work.

  • Sometimes I have dreams about doing cocaine and when I wake up, I feel exhausted and like I need to sleep.

  • I have the most RANDOM And INSANE Dreams ever they make no sence it's so weird...

  • I don't know if its because I'm super smart, handsome, and observant, but I'm pretty sure that if you pause it at 0:05 and look really, really hard, you can see some BEWBS!!!!! Lulz, Troll.jpeg Face ON!

  • Cheers guys I learned something new.. Carkeys can be put on toast.. who would of thought!

  • I really hope i have a dream about hedgehog pirates when i go to sleep tonight. Sounds awesome.

  • @Trickycandyfloss thanks for the tip :}

  • Oh wow, this video was genius. The information was interesting too.

  • @Trickycandyfloss well i get random hours, 5hours to 8hours and no matter what im still fatigued.

and sometimes i over sleep with 10-11 hours and feel amazing. lol

  • How can we be sure that our daily life isn't a dream and in that life we have dreams too...

  • @lceus you're an idiot thats how

  • i actually dream about killing zombies all the time, and most of them are super vivid.

or i have sex with someone that has never wanted to screw me before lol and there just like okay whatever.

i actually wish i could just dream forever, because my dream worlds are always better then the reality. also when i wake up im just so tired i want to sleep more, even when i have more then 5 hours of sleep.

  • i love not learning anything when i watch these videos

  • @tailzz14 lmfao so true.....

  • @tailzz14

    so true

  • @tailzz14 you are dreaming, this reply is fake confrontation

  • dreams are video games but in out brain. fucking cool.

  • INCEPTIONNN

  • so REM is our brain defragging?

  • but can this study cure cancer?

  • @warcrap But can you? No.

  • If i dream of penises, am i gay? i like girls

  • I want to have a damn window installed into the side of my head for people can always see what I'm thinking about.

  • YES, when i am playing a video game and get stuck on a puzzle, i will go to sleep, and when i wake up i can complete the difficult part of the game, i always thought this was really weird and its cool to know scientists have found this as well. this also helps with school homework, its like a magical power lol

  • @themilkmister ME TOO!!!

  • I hope they do research on how to alter dreams..

  • Can dreams cause deja vu?

I feel like i have had many instances where i would dream something, forget about it, then live it... causing deja vu.

  • Thank you! Great video!

  • i hate when i have a dream then wake up and feel like ive had a very similar dream before.

  • That explains why for about a week after finals I always dream that I forgot to study for an exam for a class I forgot I had.

  • The guy using MS Paint to do this video is a pro ! Give him a bonus.

    On topic- Great Video :)

  • finally you fired the annoying woman

  • Most of my dreams are on the subject of suicide or death. Anything that isn't is passionate loving (not lustful intercourse, that is to say).

I believe those two statements summarise me quite nicely: I'm scared of and so am trying to prepare myself for a suicide-that-may-or-may-not-happen over the fact that my life would be meaningless and futile were I to not get a loving partner.

At least I think that, anyway.

  • im having sex in my dreams 0_o

  • sometime is dream like a story,

sometime it's like a message from another person with "real" content,

sometime with concrete people, concrete numbers,

(my statistics about dreaming = 0-5 dreams per night , from 25days was with dreams 12days; and average is 2dreams per dream_night :-)

it's interesting to think about it after; with dream-book

we know, dreams are here, but don't know why, how, and what for ???? :-))

  • i just whant a way to record my dreams so i can watch them when i awake.

  • @icern300 lucid dreaming my friend.

  • @icern300 That's what I always say, that I wish I could record them.. (and maybe upload them to youtube).

  • @icern300 lol you just want a porn vid of you and a supermodel

  • @icern300 Ya same, unless they're a nightmare, in which case I'd be like "AHHH!!!! DELETE, DELETE, DELETE!!!" lol

  • @icern300 That would e scary. We would nees DreamTube to see those.

  • @icern300 You can. I've done that. Ohh what.. was that a dream?

  • yea, kids dreams are more like those of our ancestors so they dream about animals, because back then people weren't a threat like raccoons were..

  • Occasionally i have a dreams and when i do their usually weird but i must of been in a non REM dream once cause i dreamt that one of my family members died and i was crying then i woke up and i had tears down my face

  • More videos like these!

  • 2:06 — Threat = eyepatch

  • i had a dream i was in a really cool prison. sounds strange and it was but it was kinda neat, and yes i was a prisoner.

  • And lucid dreaming would completely destroy the uses of dreams if either of these hypothesis were correct...

  • @ 2:00

He's back! Hedgehog Black-patch the Sinister, my arch nemesis from nightmares long forgotten.

Now he will haunt my sleep yet again for years to come.

    I must make preparations!

  • i am loving this amusing video!!!!!!!!! i want moar of thissssssssssssss!!!!!!!

  • I've had that same zombie dream!

  • So MLK was just preparing for an unsegregated society

  • finally a science video, well done "newscientist"

  • great!

  • why do we look for purpose that isnt there?

  • @volound what makes you certain that dreams have no purpose?

  • @Cuddlebunzzzz because they are a manifestation of the brain which is an evolutionary product which is a natural process which is not the result of a consciousness with which to assign purpose.

  • @volound every evolutionary product has a purpose: to enable an organism to better adapt to their environment. the use of "purpose" in this context does not imply a conscious creator, but rather refers to a goal that a physiological process aims to accomplish. you're thinking of the word "purpose" as it is used in a philosophical context, which is a completely different subject than this.

  • @Cuddlebunzzzz the word in the title is "why" not "how"
