The kids thing isn't so true.. I've never had a dream about animals being a bad guy or whatever. All my dreams are more like random stuff... For example, I was in an army airplane with a Portal 2 laser redirecting cube and then the plane exploded and I was blasted into a jail cell with the cube then it teleported me to the Eiffel Tower in France and we had to climb up to the top without falling and dieing and then we skydived... BTW when I mean climb up, I mean inside it, like there was a mounta
I had this really weird dream the other day I was talking to this blond girl in a bar when this person approached me saying that he was the head of my subconscious security, he told me to follow him so i did, then a bunch of people appeared including the girl from Juno which was a bit strange anyway it turns out my dead dad loved me all along and that he wants me to break up his energy monopoly. odd huh?
when i was a kid i \once had a dream my mom gave birth to a octacpus or how ever u spell it n i was running from it in the hospital lmaooo! i cant belive i rmember that dream weird
i also want some info..it has happened to me, for other people i dont know but when i dream few days or months later it becomes real..has it happened to you? ...why does this happen
@manuelm90 The Same thing happens to me ALL THE TIME. I thought I was the only one. I've experienced deja vu so many times already I just shrug them off now telling myself "Alright I saw this happen already, but whatever." So found any info since you asked? I'd like to know myself.
I think the reason we dream isn't as profound a question as we're making it out to be. Consciousness is a product of higher brain function the brain never stops or "turns off" so we dream but since we have no external stimuli during our unconscious state the brain calls upon previous experiences.
it can be used for both emotions and memory. it doesnt have to be one or the other. in my opinion if you try and translate your dreams by the symbols the dream gives you, it can help you with whats going on in your life currently. Aswell, if you say you dont have dreams, just remember you allways do, just sometimes you cant remember them aswell
still doesn't address why we are witness to dreams, only attempts to explain why we have them. the dreams need not be experienced to "reap the dream's benefits" as this video suggests.
I often dream that I ride around everywhere & anywhere on a bicycle and always with the front wheel up in the air in a "wheelie" position. Riding only upon the back wheel, I go over or through any obstacle that I encounter & I enjoy having these dreams... riding wherever I please
@KiranGlitch Actually, that's a scary prospect, because the moment they can record our dreams, they will be able to record our thoughts, which will mean everything about you will be an open book. Such a thing could be easily abused by unscrupulous & invasive governments, destroying our last vestiges of privacy. Wearing a tin-foil hat might be the only way to keep them out of your head.
@dafttool yes but a law might come out that protects dreams from being used for inappropriate uses, and you would have to give your permission for someone to record your dreams, you can't just let then record every single dream you dream....
@KiranGlitch You don't seem to understand the repercussions of this technology you envision. America is the land of the free, a nation of laws, generally well-respected, yet is also where we now torture and wire-tap and snoop on your computer. If we can read your dreams, we will be able to read your mind. Who cares what your dreams are? It's your actual thoughts they will one day be after. Technology like this will make waterboarding obsolete, as well as the privacy to have a mind of your own.
@KiranGlitch That may likely be in the near future. Artificial neural networks can now reconstruct fuzzy images from firings in one's occipital lobe in the brain.
dreaming is the dress rehearsal for the after life, which in my opinion is a non physical world. Perhaps what we perceive as reality is in fact us dreaming of a physical world in our own afterlives.
I think kids dream of villainous animals because half of freaking kids toys and cartoons feature anthropomorphised animals - and deep down they know this is freakish and wrong.
It's simple - we have to sleep because otherwise, we'd would burn too much energy and have no time to recover after a hard days work. Dreams are just simulations our brains put us through so we're doing something useful during that time. People who dream were selected for because it provides utility. There, end of discussion.
@coolman9999uk End of discussion folks, his theory fills in a few puzzles he's got it down. Coolman9999uk, definantly an intelligent name to go down in history...
i havent watched the video yet, but this is a subject i feel i know well. I believe we dream for many reasons, a nightmare can help us feel better when awake aswell as prepare us for real life shocking events w/e they might be. to avoid the "dear in head lights" effect that can cost that life, it builds the freight and flight response. when not in actual shock we respond accurately, with confidence due to the brain having experienced far worse"nightmare"
human conscience inhibits the rate in which we except and process information, example, when asleep we can literally dream a whole life time in seconds! i have experienced this myself in which an alarm clock would sound (real life). in dream, i dreamed whole events leading right up to the alarm clock waking me up in my dream, then waking up in real life, hope that made sense, i feel it possible the brain being able to think at speed of light (subconsciously), but first, conscious blocks this.
in summery, "good" dreams promotes procreation (of the gene), "bad" dreams promotes survival, i do not believe people who claim they solve problems when asleep, however dreams of flying (not in plane) can promote inventions! which is survival unless of coarse you fear flying.
problem solving requires conscious effort.
nature makes sure (when asleep) that all our time here is not wasted. we live on average 80 years, 1/ 3rd of that we sleep, so 26.666 years we sleep in life.
OMG That is SO awesome!!! I guess I will never have an outragous dream, cause I never hit REM! lol But I guess that does explain why I had a dream about college lol
So is visualization (acting out/practicing in your mind an upcoming real event), in effect, a waking dream?
My dreams typically consist of things I've been thinking about the during the day, bits and pieces of thought thrown into a blender on high and played out as a movie in my mind. Weird stuff.
last dream I had the sun came to close to the earth, and to avoid being burned alive I guided a group of people over a fence where we hid in the shade.
@mrboxleytheonly government brainwashing of global warming must be getting to you... Now im not saying that global warming isnt real but government hysteria and the constant one way propaganda certainly is.
And before anyone attacks me on being a conspiracy theorist why dont they look at the "solutions" proposed and the details of how they "work".
all dreams are is the rearranging of thoughts and everything. coincidentally, almost everything in our minds was put there by stimulus from the outside (things we see, hear etc.) during the rearrangement of those impulses can propagate the signal and parts of ur brain not yet "asleep" process that as incoming info. that's why it only happens on ur way to deep sleep. (REM/stage B4 deep sleep) when part of ur brain is still awake
reminds me of the film vanilla sky, i think i might be the only person ive met who liked it.... what about reoccurring dreams. very annoying they are...
whenever i dream its always something that deeply moves me. The most prominent dreams i remember are ones that always involve love, but not plain and simple. Theres always a longing for something unreachable and some great desire for it.
religious persons theory on dreams: a dream is just god talking to you and telling you what to do nothing more and if you say otherwise you are going to go to hell and burn for all eternity!
rational thinking non-religious person: dreams are the subconscious thinking of a persons desires problem solving and thoughts of a random occurrence we should study this to better understand it.
people can try to analyze these things all they want, but honestly i don't think we'll never know the whole truths abt dreams and other things we baffle over like that through just scientific research. maybe we aren't even supposed to know at all.
This is how new scientist videos should be. Not (necessarily) animated, but informative, well narrated and capable of standing on their own as opposed to being simple imagery for their website's articles.
Some dreams are also excuses to stay asleep.. ever had that dream where you wake up and get ready for work( or school ) and then when you do wake up you relieze your late?
I don't know if its because I'm super smart, handsome, and observant, but I'm pretty sure that if you pause it at 0:05 and look really, really hard, you can see some BEWBS!!!!! Lulz, Troll.jpeg Face ON!
i actually dream about killing zombies all the time, and most of them are super vivid.
or i have sex with someone that has never wanted to screw me before lol and there just like okay whatever.
i actually wish i could just dream forever, because my dream worlds are always better then the reality. also when i wake up im just so tired i want to sleep more, even when i have more then 5 hours of sleep.
YES, when i am playing a video game and get stuck on a puzzle, i will go to sleep, and when i wake up i can complete the difficult part of the game, i always thought this was really weird and its cool to know scientists have found this as well. this also helps with school homework, its like a magical power lol
Most of my dreams are on the subject of suicide or death. Anything that isn't is passionate loving (not lustful intercourse, that is to say).
I believe those two statements summarise me quite nicely: I'm scared of and so am trying to prepare myself for a suicide-that-may-or-may-not-happen over the fact that my life would be meaningless and futile were I to not get a loving partner.
Occasionally i have a dreams and when i do their usually weird but i must of been in a non REM dream once cause i dreamt that one of my family members died and i was crying then i woke up and i had tears down my face
@Cuddlebunzzzz because they are a manifestation of the brain which is an evolutionary product which is a natural process which is not the result of a consciousness with which to assign purpose.
@volound every evolutionary product has a purpose: to enable an organism to better adapt to their environment. the use of "purpose" in this context does not imply a conscious creator, but rather refers to a goal that a physiological process aims to accomplish. you're thinking of the word "purpose" as it is used in a philosophical context, which is a completely different subject than this.

YES, when i am playing a video game and get stuck on a puzzle, i will go to sleep, and when i wake up i can complete the difficult part of the game, i always thought this was really weird and its cool to know scientists have found this as well. this also helps with school homework, its like a magical power lol

Can dreams cause deja vu?
I feel like i have had many instances where i would dream something, forget about it, then live it... causing deja vu.

That explains why for about a week after finals I always dream that I forgot to study for an exam for a class I forgot I had.

At least I think that, anyway.

sometime is dream like a story,
sometime it's like a message from another person with "real" content,
sometime with concrete people, concrete numbers,
(my statistics about dreaming = 0-5 dreams per night , from 25days was with dreams 12days; and average is 2dreams per dream_night :-)
it's interesting to think about it after; with dream-book
we know, dreams are here, but don't know why, how, and what for ???? :-))

And lucid dreaming would completely destroy the uses of dreams if either of these hypothesis were correct...

why do we look for purpose that isnt there?
volound 11 months ago
@volound what makes you certain that dreams have no purpose?
Cuddlebunzzzz 11 months ago
@Cuddlebunzzzz because they are a manifestation of the brain which is an evolutionary product which is a natural process which is not the result of a consciousness with which to assign purpose.
volound 11 months ago
@volound every evolutionary product has a purpose: to enable an organism to better adapt to their environment. the use of "purpose" in this context does not imply a conscious creator, but rather refers to a goal that a physiological process aims to accomplish. you're thinking of the word "purpose" as it is used in a philosophical context, which is a completely different subject than this.
Cuddlebunzzzz 11 months ago
@Cuddlebunzzzz the word in the title is "why" not "how"
