  • I love Dune. I love Warhammer 40,000. I'm not a fan of Starcraft.

  • @Truth118 Heretic! :O

  • wow i clicking on random warhammer 40k and came to a Dune clip... both great storys and so forth but wow talk about random

  • @brass76 Me too. I think it's the 'Emperor' tag.

Do note that Dune was a HUGE influence on 40K. An Emperor, warp travel, huge armies of elite soldiers conquering the galaxy...

  • @SAMagic I'm not so convinced about that.... Especially since the primary influence on the Emperor is the Deified image of a Roman Emperor and the fact that a lot of scifi series feature large armies of elite soldiers.

  • @joentheamouni3 Roman Emperor - how so? I'm curious. The Emperor resembles more the Judeo-Christian God (and Jesus) more than anything, though my understanding of the Roman Emperors is limited.

Dune is the biggest influence on 40K IMO, right down to the novels I'm currently reading - though maybe I haven't read enough variety of other sci-fi universes to see. Googling for "Warhammer 40 Dune" brings up a number of forum threads with other perspectives too.

  • @SAMagic The Emperor might look like Jesus, but trust me, that's not his basis. The Roman people were pretty much forced to worship their Emperor as an Immortal god, who did not die, and was the shining light of the Emperor. How the influence cannot be seen is beyond me.

  • @joentheamouni3 I can't see it because I'm not massively aware of Roman Emperors, feel free to enlighten me with a brief explanation or link as I'd love to know more. There are certainly heavy shades of Rome (what with the Legions, a galaxy of barbarians to conquer and the names of marines) but I always saw the Emperor as the Judeo-Christian God out to save humanity, with Horus as the Fallen Angel, Satan, who betrays him.

  • @SAMagic 40k has three main inspirations, Dune, Battletech and Starship troopers and is largely an amalgamation of those with a sprinkling of high fantasy.

  • They say it as "Fayliure" when it's supposed to be "Failure" [Fay-il-ure]

  • When they said "Improvement is necessary" it sounded female.

  • this is what my dreams are like

  • fucking shit parody copying Darth Veider + da Emperor lol

  • @TrueSigismunT troll?

  • Nightmare fuel!

  • Why is my teacher on Youtube?

  • i want to kill this guy. really badly.

  • wait, who is this guy?

  • again, not a defeat screen, but a warning screen, freaky one too, get your act together or "Contract terminated"

  • This translatory machine DOES remind me of the Guild Agent from Dune, but similar creature appeared also in the Hellraiser movie series, and the whole idea of the translating device is much older and was, I think, first invented in the "Flash Gordon" series. Also, the agent from Dune had the microphone he was speaking to, while Ordos uses something elso.

  • @Sniffer194 there are some more similiartiies besides that, imo House Ordos is an executive branch of the Guild, i think they actualy are theyre secret force in order to fulfill special tasks.

why hiring some external forces while you can have a private army? besides that you don't have to kill the hired army evrytime after they saw forbidden tech or other heresy related stuff =P

  • WTF WHOS THAT DUDE?

  • @halo3killaxxx I think he works at the State building in Trenton, NJ.

  • @Spartacus217 I am from NJ and I endorse this theory.

  • The voice almost sounds like the voice in Team Fortress 2...

    "You Must NOT fail!"

    "Failure, is NOT an option!"

  • @DaUsher Yeah, the Announcer rocks xD

  • Failure, is NOT an option. You gotta love the Speaker

  • uh, wow nice

  • i heard dune was way after warhammer like 10 years or something

  • Dune was written in and published around 1956, more than a decade before Warhammer Fantasy was released, and that came before Warhammer 40k.

  • Dune was published in 1965, actually.

  • Warhammer 40k was inspired by Dune and the Foundation series.

  • Try Heinlein. WH40,000 is far more reminiscent of Starship Troopers than Dune.

  • Have you even read the background story for WH40k or Starship Troopers? They have very little in common.

  • If you can't see the parallels, you're blind.

  • Imperial Guard >> SST Soldiers & RNs

Imperial Navy >> SST Fleet ships

    Tyrannids >> "Bugs"

Difference: 40k IS the year. 40k has thousands of star systems under the Imperium's control. 40k has power armor and warships that can destroy planets (Exterminatis would solve the "Bug Problem"). The IOM wishes it only had one enemy to worry about, rather than 6 great enemies across the galaxy.

Thats how there's "Very little in common".

Read "Warhammer 40k" & you'll see it too.

  • I'll agree that the Ordos Xenos/Malleus as well as a few other elements were borrowed from Herbert, but the overall concept/attitude of humanity in 40K is decidedly Heinlein.

During the 1990's especially, GW were borrowing ideas from a good number of sources.

  • It has much more in common with the Foundation Series.

  • @billyboyjennings Yeah, I have to laugh when people say that ST directly influenced WH40K, and they are nothing alike. I don't remember seeing a God-Emperor or Angels of Death in ST. Or the Angels of Death's evil twins, in fact.

  • @PINGASFIST not directly, but some stuff indirectly did it

  • @PINGASFIST Power armor is the only thing they have in common.

  • @billyboyjennings Yeah, the first one is actually interesting and original, while the other one is simply a made-for-profits rip-off.

  • that guy is so creepy

  • only 3 letters wtf

  • Hey, all of this was the inspiration for the Imperium of Man in the Warhammer 40,000 Universe

  • Considering the Ordos as a non-canon faction in the Dune universe came roughly 10 years *after* the Warhammer tabletop game and its many spawned extra races and video games, you're flat-out wrong. The two have nothing to do with one another and even if they *did* the "inspiration" would have been the other way around.

  • He may be referring to Dune in general. I'll admit that not all elements of Dune were used, but then again it was a major inspiration.

But you're right, the Ordos definitely did not inspire Warhammer 40 K. Also, the Speaker's jewel is off center, and it looks like a delicious cherry ring pop, and also I'm going on a rant here, but I think they should have had the Executrix be some kind of borg-like board of directors on multiple view screens.

  • That guy looks just like Sean Connery.

  • when the voice goes low it sounds like john hurt

  • yeah, you are right! didn't noticed it at first... funny

  • Four beings who appear connected in some form of gestalt collective mind, known as The Executrix. All verbal contact between the rulers of House Ordos and the player is through the medium of a creature known only as 'The Speaker'.

  • empire is fackin great game! i loved it and iloved the story

  • Damn, that looked cool =D

  • Very creepy... but that has not longer much to do with the original Dune novels.

  • Dude this guy looks like the borg from star trek...

  • 'failure is not an option'

Wow, somehow the Ordos has some connection to Kane :P

  • Maybe Kane is a member of the Executrix Council...

  • Cool! where can I sign in?? XD

Got me playing the entire Dune game again!

  • I want a black diamond on my forehead too...

  • That looks badly CGI'd... :)

  • the game rulz

  • what is this? a movie?

  • FMV for the Ordos faction in Emperor: Battle for Dune gained I think when you lose a lot of territory and screw up.

  • i like the fx, nice eyes

  • I play this over and over when yet another one of my guild wars (would be) survivors die. lol

  • wish ordos stopped leto II :(
