they fired dennis connors from the NY YC AND HE WENT HOME AND DECIDED TO NOT SIT AND SULK BUT TO REBUILD HIS REPUTATION AND CAMPAIN AND HE BEAT EVERY BOAT NEWYORK HAD AND WENT ON TO WIN IT BACK IN 1987 REPRESENTING HIS YACHT CLUB IN SAN DIAGO NOT BAD AND HE WOULD GO ON WITH JOHN BERTROM AS HIS ASSISTANT SKIPPER IN 1990 CAMPAIN
@MynameisElliott No, people race over to the winner to get a better look, celebrate etc. Happens at most regattas no matter who won, so don't jump to conclusions.
l was there and it was an unreal time so proud to be an Australian this was a race l didnt go to watch but l was on the warf when we docked it was fanbloodytastic
This was the greatest moment in Aust history. better than olympic medals, ashes series anything like that. Those who were around at the time will just have tingles up their spine watching this.
i have one of the commemorative 1983 america's cup v-neck, short sleeved jumpers that i found in a vintage clothes shop. does anyone know how much it is worth? were there many made?
We all had the day off from school because we where all so tired from watching the race - What a great feeling. I still get goose bumps from pride. Such formidable opponents - unfortunately only one team could come first but it was not given away. The Americans should be equally proud to have been such tough competitors.
Legends... I was 8yrs old and had just started competitive sailing. I remember my mum not letting me stay up to watch this... I woke up to see the finish and watch my father almost jump through the ceiling. Hard to believe a sailing race stopped the nation, but it did. One of my fondest memories as a child and has shaped my life. I now work with AC and VOR teams and whenever i get p***ed off at work i rewind back to this to focus again... Great stuff...
I may be a New Zealander, but I'm the first to say that Australia's achievement in winning the America's cup in 1983 was ABSOLUTELY MAGNIFICENT !!! well done my Aussie brothers ! I'm tremendously proud of you !
@sequana8 It opened the door for you guys to dominate it. Pity they changed the nationality rules, there is little doubt in my mind you'd still have it.... (and we wouldn't be using bloody cats in 2013!!)
Amazing accomplishment. Not only did Australia II break a winning streak that was 132 years old, it was behind 3-1 in this series. They had to win the last three.
This is footage from the Australian film "Aussie Assault" which cannot be found anywhere. I had the VHS tape but lost it when I moved in 1993. I could kill myself it was such a great film.
I remember watching this in the very early hours here in Australia. They messed up when they tried to defend it with the Kookaburra yachts as the media showed Australia ii could still go faster
to hear John Bertrand tell it KA-6 was quite a tetchy yacht, and the keel only gave a clear advantage in tight tacking... Linerty wasn't an inferior boat, the Aussies out-thought the rest... the key to their victory was their pysche, and a lot of hard work in the sail loft each night...
I'm looking for the footage after the race where the PM (Bob Hawk) says that any boss not give his workers the day off is a bum. I know he said it because I was watching the telecast at the time with my boss. Yes, I did get the day off.
This clip is from a documentary called Aussie Assault. Does anyone know where I can get a copy of this either on VHS or any other format. Amazon says this is currently not in production. So if there are any used copies out there let me know !
Liberty was not an inferior boat, it was the mistique of the Australia II keel that rattled the american's confidence. Read the book by John Bertrand: "Born to Win" in which the skipper from Australia II explains how they did it. Superior sail design and strong team-work.
@bashuibers Nonsense. Dennis Conner admitted in a tacking contest Australia 2 had it all over Liberty. Granted he made some mistakes in the last race, hopeing to head off A2's speed advantage. The fact that nearly every boat since has copied A2's winged keel demonstrates it was a quantum leap in technology.
@morfrey Australia 2 benefitted from a wind shift, but it was still a far faster boat. Dennis Connor kept Liberty in the race with his sailing skills.
@Sodnal And too end the bullshit, Bob Miller (AKA Ben Lexcen) experimented with a winged keel on his 18" skiff Taipan. He asked permission from NYYC and took the concept to a Dutch testing tank. It was developed there but the idea was always his.
@bashuibers Liberty was a great boat and would have beaten any other except Australia II. Dennis is an absolute professional and his crew exceptional. The Aussies knew crew work was key and developed them to be IMHO almost as good as the Americans. The winged keel was meant to reduce hull drag which was predicted to be an advantage upwind. This didn't turn out to be so true as the Aussie thought Liberty was quicker upwind. Australia II's main advantage was its super quick tacking. & a good gybe
What a great time to be an Australian.. No fuckin ethnic gangs, no fukn muslim terrorists operating on our land, no weak dogs king hitting and killing people outside nightclubs. How i miss those days.
@morfrey Same thing happened to Australia as happened to US. Doors thrown wide open on immigration with NO rhyme or reason and in comes the riffraff. Destroyed two good nations.
I had this uploaded too and it was dragged also. Is the owner of youtube a former crew member of Liberty???? One wonders... My video had such a great response
YEAH - NOW THAT's WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT!

The Coast Guard needed to protect the Australian boat from the Americans who were watching the race? Thats shameful.

The winged keel did it - and what an effect it had on from there on. Many private boats have the winged keel today.

Aussies battled it out for the win in 1983. Dennis Connor sailed very well in an inferior boat.
