@SecularNumanist Actually Qui-Gon Jinn taught both Yoda and Obi-Wan Kenobi how to become Force Ghosts. Since he was the first one to discover how to do it though, all the other Jedis died in a more savage fashion.
but luke was the first could talk to ghosts with the force and without so he could also see padme and shmi ghosts it showed that on the star wars wiki
@Silverbullet89 he most lucky wanted Luke to choice for his self and not just come and say hello my name is Obi wan Kenob and I will train you for you can be a Jedi follow me.
Obi-wan also told Owen and Beru what had happened to Anakin and what he'd done, so Owen had the double burden of knowing that he was Darth Vader's brother (Shmi married Owen's father between Episdoes I and II) and keeping Luke safe from his father, so Owen lied to Luke about Obi-Wan and Anakin's exploits because Luke was like a son to him and he didn't want him sharing his brother's fate and to keep him safe from Anakin
@Silverbullet89 ..im no stars wars geek..but.. he may have had doubts about training luke because what happened the last time he trained a Skywalker!.. almost end of the galaxy and all!!!
Yes your right late 50's is probably more accurate. I think he looks right for that age other then the white hair, although the lose of hair color varies from person to person. I still do not think they look all to weak, unless you compare to the new ones. I think the old movies are cannon though(4,5,6) George should have had someone else write the preqeuls.
Yea I guess but remember the Jedi don't use the force to attack. I guess he could do a force jump but in the space they were in I see no need. Whether Obi Wan could beat Vader we'll never know. My take on it is he might have been able to but it was not his path and he knew it.
Well I like the fight. It wasn't perfect, Obi Wan's spin was dumb and it was a tad slow sometimes. But despite that it was acted well. Alec Guinness didn't look weak to me, he seemed to be coming strong. Great acting and dialogue. Thinking about it this fight could have got way more intense had it went on longer. There is really no place where you'd need to do a force jump in this scene. Its just classic sword play.
@Silverbullet89 well, a boxing champion which does not fight since 20 years will be also weak. Kenobi was alone on Tatooine, his last real swordfight was two decades ago.
1:46 is possibly my favourite second of Star Wars.
It's like he's saying, 'yeh you're about to kill me, but Luke's on my side, and he's going to kill you eventually, I'll win, despite this defeat, so fuck you, you prick.'
@blacky3ard well not really swords persay. They were props usually manufactured out of Flash handles and other unique things, with poles coming out the end for reference.
Why did Lucas forget that one of these duels can be just as if not more engaging without 10 minutes of cgi and choreography? The Luke vs Vader fights later on in the series were never topped by the technology fest.
1) in the first film only they used fragile spinning reflective rods as a part of the effect When they hit too hard, they break. So they're "pulling their punches" to keep from breaking the props.
2) If you look at Vader's costume, you'll notice that there's a section like a flap that covers his shoulders which makes it so you can't raise your arms over your head
Complex costumes are usually cooler on the outside looking in since they can be a hassle to move around in.
He looked more like he was around 40 in episode III, and here he should be somewhere around 60....... he did change quite a bit from episode III to IV though. I thought Lukes aunt looked way too old in episode IV.
in the universe of star wars they say that if a jedi deliberatly let himself go into the force, he can return later and with even more power, thats why he did that. sorry my bad english im from uruguay
In this particular fight, its not about the combat. Its the gravity of the situation. The meeting after all that went down. Yes, its a slow fight, but the intensity is great. If one cant appreciate this slower, yet classic fight, then you're not a real star wars fan.
@florgamary Slow? More like hard! Every strike was filled with power and as you said intensity. I think the only thing it needs to shut the haters up is to have the Rebel Fanfare playing in the background, that would make it even more epic than it already is.
Keep in mind most of the moves in this particular fight were done by Sir Alec Guiness playing an aged Obi Wan Kenobi. The 1977 Star Wars didnt have the support, in technology or budget then the ones made over the past several years. Still a classic fight never the less.
Obi Wan still has it after all these years. But he's past his prime for sure. I don't see him battling General Grievus with his 4 light sabers any more.
Obi wan hadn't lost strength (look at Dooku, Palpatine, and Yoda, who are older than him in this movie). Darth Vader had just become MUCH stronger than the last time they met, and much smarter. He would not be making a mistake like challenging Kenobi's high ground again. Kenobi realized Vader was now too powerful for him to defeat, and ALLOWED Vader to strike him down so he became one with the force. Obi Wan fights much the same in this as in Ep III. Classic Soresu.
Darth Vader actually became weaker, after he was put in the suit his power was nearly half of what it was without the suit. He didn't realize Vader was too strong, he just wanted to provide a distraction to allow Luke, Leia, Han, and Chewie to escape
if you were really versed in the series you will know that Vader's injuries cut his POTENTIAL in half. Lucas says Vader in the suit was 80% as powerful as Palpatine. Pre suited Vader had not even NEARLY reached his potential, as demonstrated by his defeat (though from overconfidence) by kenobi. I am claiming suited Vader is stronger than unsuited vader was at the time just before his injuries. Had he not been injured, he would have been far more powerful, more than even palpatine and yoda.
@Sexxor69 Agree wholeheartedly. Obi-Wan knew he had to sacrifice himself in order to let the others escape. Vader handn't won the duel yet... in fact it looked to me like Obi-Wan was moving to pin Vader against the wall, much like Obi-Wan did in their first duel on Mustafaar, Obi-Wan was maneuvering Vader around.
I agree that obi wan had not lost strength. But i dont think that vader was Much more powerfull than he was after ep lll, IN truth they prolly both were weaker in lV then they were in lll. IN the story palpatine even said that vader isnt wat he used to be. and ITS OBVIOUS that he isnt. His djem so style was stiff and lacked passion and strength. his djem so here was disgraceful compared to what it was. IF ANYTHING THEY BOTH were using classic soresu with basic shii cho techniqes
Another thing I love to watch is how Ben Kenobi is the aggressor in this fight, which highly contradicts his top notch, disciplined mastery of Soresu.
Obi-Wan is as gangsta as it gets. A top notch Jedi who looks like that guy that always asks you for change? Sign me up!!! By the way, Obi-Wan is the master of talking shit. "Only a master of evil, Darth!" That's to make fun of Anakin for being weak enough to fall to the Sith.
I remembered a scene with a forcefields, and them stopping to meditate while separated by the forcefield. And the apprentice trapped behind the last one, unable to join he fight. Perhaps it's another guy. I was 9-10 at the time...

Remember the end of revenge of the Sith? Yoda teaches Obi Wan immortality.
So Yoda and Obi wan both die this way because they have learned immortality, but all the others who got killed just died normally.

2 reasons
1) in the first film only they used fragile spinning reflective rods as a part of the effect When they hit too hard, they break. So they're "pulling their punches" to keep from breaking the props.
2) If you look at Vader's costume, you'll notice that there's a section like a flap that covers his shoulders which makes it so you can't raise your arms over your head
