The biggest mistake the United States made was to turn its back on Ho Chi Minh when he asked the US to make Vietnam a part of America. Instead, we let the French go back into Vietnam after the Japanese had run them out. Then we didn't fully support the French fighters when the Ho Chi Minh and the Communists attacked them. The same thing we did to the South Vietnamese when the Communists attacked in 1975. I am ashamed of how the US handled Vietnam.

President Johnson was micro-managing the war instead of letting his generals fight it. Air Force bombers were bombing outhouses outside Hanoi and Haiphong instead of directly striking those cities like the Eighth Air Force did in Nazi Germany, thus destroying the will of the Communist North Vietnamese to press the war against the South Vietnamese people.
@doorgunnerAmerical --I meant air power. Germany didnt surrender in WWII smply because its cities were bombed. You need ground troops to win a war. LBJ did foolishly micromanage , but with fighting guerrillas in jungles, we couldnt make them surrender. No matter how many we killed, they alwasy had fresh recruits. They were fighting for their cause (regardless of how bad Communism is/was), the S Vietnamese didnt have as much incentive, and we didnt fight the war very intelligently.

One can be falsely accused--, this is why the obviously guilty (like Calley), as well as everyone else, has that protection in US and West. Even if the crimes were murder and rape. In US, courts often release an accused criminal outrught if the police violated his legal rights---study the US Constitution---4th, 5th amendments

Oh, do u know who support them at that time? American, due, not anyone else, he he. So, there was a legal government for VietNam. 1954, well, 2 years truce agreement was just for an re-election for which, even CIA admitted that Uncle Ho was going to win again. So, why the heck the Commies had to broke it?

@phungvietanhao I lived in vietnam for many years and I still have a lot of relative there. I came to US for less than 5 years and join the airforce. Both my parents work for the south Vietnam before the Fall of Saigon. I love my country but hate living under the communist. I'm very talented and smart in many ways but was denied by the communist gov't from job and even in military. Many dumb people ranks ahead of me because their parents was a VC unlike mine.

The biggest mistake the United States made was to turn its back on Ho Chi Minh when he asked the US to make Vietnam a part of America. Instead, we let the French go back into Vietnam after the Japanese had run them out. Then we didn't fully support the French fighters when the Ho Chi Minh and the Communists attacked them. The same thing we did to the South Vietnamese when the Communists attacked in 1975. I am ashamed of how the US handled Vietnam.

Unfortuanalty the North started the war again in 1974 and the USA did not come back to help the South this time. The South bravley fough on but by April 1975 the South lost the war with the north. In this video we see american navy help evacuate citizens of the south.

@50poiuyt ---no we didnt. Our goals were noble---to stop spread of Communism, the enemy and biggest danger of those times. Regardless of whether we should have fought there, look at how brutal the Communist regimes were in SE Asia afterwards. You think those Communists were good people? What kind of liberties did they enjoy? If we only were able to install a truly democratic governmnet in S Vietnam, and insituted land reform, etc to improve conditions, this ending may neverhave occurred

President Johnson was micro-managing the war instead of letting his generals fight it. Air Force bombers were bombing outhouses outside Hanoi and Haiphong instead of directly striking those cities like the Eighth Air Force did in Nazi Germany, thus destroying the will of the Communist North Vietnamese to press the war against the South Vietnamese people.

@doorgunnerAmerical --I meant air power. Germany didnt surrender in WWII smply because its cities were bombed. You need ground troops to win a war. LBJ did foolishly micromanage , but with fighting guerrillas in jungles, we couldnt make them surrender. No matter how many we killed, they alwasy had fresh recruits. They were fighting for their cause (regardless of how bad Communism is/was), the S Vietnamese didnt have as much incentive, and we didnt fight the war very intelligently.

@loyaldude10 -- I talked to an Army NCO after we captured a "kid" who looked like he should have been in elementary school. The NCO explained that we had killed all the grown men the NVA had hurled at us and now they were rounding up kids to use as cannon fodder.

Can all citizens practice their religion freely (places of worship, manner of dress, observance of holidays)? Can they travel freely around the world? I have yet to see a Communist (or socialist as some poeple like to say) have these liberties.

Western countries maintain law and order, but we have the freedom of voting out those leaders who perform poorly or we disagree with. Socialist countires are stuck with leaders who keep the job as if they are the Pope.. And rightly or wrongly, N Vietnam broke the 1954 truce/boundary agreement

The radical ones r the biggest threat to the Western world, and they live silently within us. While we may monitor them, we dont stop them from assembling or worshipping. They laugh at us, in that they can penetrate our borders, take advantage of freedoms we have---they enter the country for work/ education, live with our freedoms and plot against us.

Maybe Vietnam is different, but muy understanding is that Vietnam has very poor record on human rights. In US, every person accused of a crime, any crime, has right to a competent attorney and a fair trial. I would like to see such a trial in Vietnam for someone politically unpopular.

Case was politicized, and that is why he only served a few yrs in jail. But I dont understand your point. this is another example of someone who is obviously guilty, but still enjoys legal rights to fair trial, appeal rights, even rights against cruel/unusual punsihment while in jail. He he, VietNamese soldiers dont have the same comfort sentence if they commit the same crime, he he. Only for rob civilians, convicted soldier can be dismissed from army and serve some years in prison. Raping and massacre, well, an absolute execution awaits any soldier who gets convicted. is it fair enough?

@phungvietanhao ---u r right. The Calley case, him not being given a long enough sentence was an injustice becuase there is sometimes TOO MUCH freedom or rights here. One can be falsely accused--, this is why the obviously guilty (like Calley), as well as everyone else, has that protection in US and West. Even if the crimes were murder and rape. In US, courts often release an accused criminal outrught if the police violated his legal rights---study the US Constitution---4th, 5th amendments

@phungvietanhao --Laws containing basic freedoms in our Constitution cannot be revised or changed easily---this is done purposely, so that a new regime or group of leaders cant come in and repeal them. Police could be sued civilly for $---I doubt if u have that in Vietnam.

Oh, do u know who support them at that time? American, due, not anyone else, he he. So, there was a legal government for VietNam. 1954, well, 2 years truce agreement was just for an re-election for which, even CIA admitted that Uncle Ho was going to win again. So, why the heck the Commies had to broke it?

However, Stalin sure knew how to make Soviet Union women into baby-maker when the population grew year by year from 1920 to 1941 (look at Soviet Union demographics in wiki). Both my parents work for the south Vietnam before the Fall of Saigon. I love my country but hate living under the communist. I'm very talented and smart in many ways but was denied by the communist gov't from job and even in military. Many dumb people ranks ahead of me because their parents was a VC unlike mine.
