It's sad to read some of these infantile remarks. Daniels is one of the few who can REALLY operate at the top of the heap in the musical worlds of Mozart, Coltrane, Stravinsky and other giants with such consistency. That he also does it with such ease might irritate some who are looking for an excuse to shoot him down. But even they know that there aren't too many clarinet players around who can play ALL of the music on this DVD with not only great chops but in such a musically convincing way.
THANK YOU!!!! Anyone that's ever met and talked to Eddie Daniels, especially clarinet players, would know that he is in my opinion one of the most vain people I've ever met. BUT DAMNIT he can play~~
The best? Really? According to what yardstick? Whether you like it or not, such statements are completely subjective. Technique is not the only aesthetic in music.
That was a sarcastic statement. Eddie Daniels is great. As a clarinet player myself I love his music. However I like the "One of the best" statement better than "the best". Eddie Daniels playing, although great, is mostly all the same and he doesn't have half the soul or swing as Paquito D'Rivera, Tony Scott, Don Byron, Artie Shaw, or even Sidney Bechet. As much as I love is tone, technique, and use of articulation listening to him play I can't learn anything. Just digital patterns and scales.
Don Byron is no one's hack. He himself being a Juilliard graduate virtuoso clarinetist comfortable in both the jazz and classical world doesn't play it safe like Eddie Daniels. I like Eddie Daniels and I play clarinet myself but his whole approach to jazz, although somewhat like a Bill Evans on clarinet, is far too clean. Dry. His tone and technical prowess is what he relies on to play. I rarely hear anything come from his heart. If I did it certainly wouldn't sound so perfectly crafted.
A hack is a hack. Some people dig Don because it doesn't take much to play like. He played a Clarifest a while back and they hated him. He sucks dude. Get back in the practice room. This sucking on the clarinet and calling it heart is complete bullshit. Take it somewhere else and learn from me. Don't learn from me at your own peril. Out.
Indeed - I think your points are true. Except that last one I would not say "just," although certainly a lot - and of course this is true of many fine improvisers.
Eddie Daniels is genius incarnate. If you have heard him in "Under The Wire" by Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Pack, you will understand. His teechnique, tone, and expression are perfect.
alokinnina no se trata de quien toque mas, son estilos de interpretacion, y en lo q a mi respecta eddie toca muy bien y obvio q aparte de èl hay clarinetistas muy buenos.....su comentarrio es muy impetuoso.

No one can touch Eddie. There are a thousand clarinet players that play as well as Paquito. He is good but not Eddie. No one is.

He indeed is. Good thing that Paquito is out there, who is probably the most humble musician I have ever met.

Comments like this are inappropriate. If you don't like the way a man plays, fine, say so, but a comment like this makes you look like a jerk.
