this is honestly one of the best films ever made - not so much on story - but on the use of visuals to make a boring old tired plot way way more interesting - this ranks up there with carnival of souls!
There are literally thousands of low-budget, B-grade, unknown, cult-followed, shlock, horror movies from the 1950's, 60's, 70's and 80's that were made, but I can honestly say, "The Mask" (1961) is definitely way up there on my "Top 5" list as far as creepy, cool, atmospheric and even a tad avant garde and artsy goes. This movie comes highly recommended by me to anyone who's into this particular genre of movie. : )
The trailer's kinda cheezy, but this is actually a very eerie movie if you catch it under the right mood. The 3-D sequences are very surreal. I've no idea why this doesn't have a bigger cult following.
That's not so. This movie has nothing to do with Jim Carrey's "The Mask." Carrey's green-faced character is directly related to an old comic book detective/hero from the 1940's -- i saw copies of it and it looks basically the same as in the Carrey film. The film trailer above is for a movie circa 1960 that was an original screenplay about an evil mask in a museum.
THis movie, despite the lousy trailer, was actually kind of spooky and according to B picture lore, inspired the comic book series that the Jim Carrey film "The Mask" was based on.
