In WW2, the Germans were able to find the position of American forces by tuning to radios that they were using. So, all personal radios were banned by Americans. Then GI's would use whatever they had to make crystal radios to listen to local broadcasts. (Google "foxhole crystal radio")

It would be very difficult for a radio station to hear others through this radio, and it would be impossible to see someone.

With modern technology, they don't need crystal radios to see and hear through walls.

instead of using a box could it be possible to fix in a more modern mic to the crystal or would the resistance of the mic wire be too much ?

It just happened that the magnet and vibrations of the box worked out to act as a mic in this case. The spirit radio is plugged in to the "sound-in" port of the computer, so a microphone would likely work fine on it's own without the crystal or the box at all.

The crystal is a germanium diode. The diode simply converts the alternating radio waves to a dc current so the audio can be heard in an ceramic earphone of high impedence, or heard amplified by the computer.

i was thinking of a batteryless mic , using the the diode principle and a source of light to power the crystal to transmit the radio waves to a receiver ,

Ok, I get it. The light has to be alternating current to get the diode to constantly put out power. A 60 watt AC bulb makes constant power through the diode, but a laser only works with one "shot" at a time, for example

There are un-powered transmitter circuits that work by talking into a speaker. The speaker coil vibrations produce enough micro-watts of power to the transmitter to transmit...but only within a room-sized area!

how does that work? do the audio sound waves influence the electromagnetic field? or does the crystal detect vibrations?? and transform them into electrical audio freqs through the radio components? so really with just a coil and a magnet you are creating a crude (but efficient) electrical sig. generater!

does it still receive radio freq. with the magnet attached? if it does then you have a simple (batteryless) two way radio... get two sets and tune them and see if you can send/receive audio at a remote distance??

Yes, it was kinda freaky to attach a magnet to the side of a crystal radio box and talk into it...imagine how I felt trying it the first time...and having it work !

The magnet is attracted to the loose ferrite coil inside the box, and when the box and magnet vibrates from the voice, it creates a varying electromagnetic field in the coil and crystal circuit, which is sent to the computer and recorded.

This radio circuit is a great multiwaveform signal detector!

have you tried recording EVP with the radio? I think that is why it is called "Spirit" radio lol

That is where the original "spirit radio" idea came from. There are societies with strict rules about EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena) recording. Talking with the dead was hot in the 1800's and early 1900's. In fact, folks were using electronic circuits to attempt to contact the dead even before radio.

If we consider that the dead may not be dead but exist in an alternate world, it may be possible to contact them.

I haven't attempted to do so, but I always keep an ear out for anomalies!

A magnet a coil and a crystal usually are the sorts of things that are used to make microphones. Not a surprise that it works. It is a surprise to see the magnet and crystal, in this case diode, working in single unit though; as microphones are usually magnets with coils or crystals. Not both.

Although I was aware that a magnet and a coil can make a microphone, I was surprised and delighted to simply attach a magnet to the back of the wooden Beta Blocker box and have it work!

At the beginning of the video, I can hear your recording of your voice from before you added the magnet. Without the magnet, the noise mostly washes you out. The magnet gave it a lot of gain.

it looks like an audio out cord leading to the laptop? is that what you used to record for the playback

That's right, the audio cord is soldered to the diode and ground connections in the radio. There's no batteries or power supply. It will only work well as a mike with a magnet stuck to the back of the radio box, so I assume the magnet vibrated with the box, similar to a real speaker or microphone.

The amplification (gain) and real-time effects came from an software audio program, Audio Hijack Pro.

I can understand your position, and I'm really not into spooky spirit stuff. But I am into altering my ordinary mindset without drugs, if possible. Beta, alpha, theta and delta brain waves are a fact, and learning to function in different states could be useful to those who are artists, musicians, and intuitive scientists. If this device can help me work in that manner, I'm all for it.
