lol the advice you gave on helping us remember 6-9 was the way i learned them a while back. I'm glad you thought of the idea too. Its really helpful to think of it that way.
The correct ASL format for numbers 1-5 is that the plam faces inward toward the signer. Those who don't do this are incorrect... unless it is a regional thing.
Thank you for the numbers video, I have since moved away from Greg the hearing impaired grader operator, he taught me the numbers last year,I had since forgotten, thks again for the included audio
Ahhhh, come on 21 gun salute! That's how I remember 21. Just a couple of things that I wanted to add, the palm orientation will always vary depending on HOW you're using the numbers. You have dates, money, time...etc. I understand that your just covering cardinal numbers, but its something viewers should be aware of if they are trying to learn numbers in ASL (the position of your hand will change). Also, the first way you signed 13-19 is the formal way of signing those numbers, its more clear.
OH! Good point about the 21-gun salute. I totally didn't think about that. And I did vary my palm orientation on 1-5. Also good points about differing orientations for date, money, time, etc. I didn't add that because I didn't want to go too in-depth which kind of seems counterintuitive considering the last minute or so of the video. Thanks for the useful comment! Much better than "you signed it wrong" like some people post. ;) Kudos and thanks for watching!
You need to emphasize the fact that numbers 1-5 faces the signer! The palm faces inward while siging these numbers :)

why do some videos show numbers 1-5 with the back of the hand and others with the hand facing forwards? is it all the same?

It's sort of the same as how people don't use perfect grammar. Technically, palm is towards you with 1-5, but either way will work, really.
