@jcfernandez27 : As I've said in many of my comments, Cebuano Bisaya is NOT considered a dialect. It is a language of its own. To be considered a dialect, it needs to be mutually comprehensible with a "mother" language - Tagalog in this case. A pure Tagalog cannot understand Cebuano, so does a Cebuano with Tagalog sans the Tagalization of the Filipino language. Boholano bisaya is a dialect as it is mutually comprehensible with a Cebuano Bisaya so too with the Dalaguetnon, Siquijodhon, etc..

@sloppyjoemagoo lol I'm half. My mom's full. She was in the audience along with my 2 cousins. haha. There was another half filipino in there and one full. So a grand total of 3 in the actual choir... and our families understood it haha. My mom actually broke down the lyrics for me when we were learning this piece. :P haha

As far as i know, this is one of the hardest traditional songs in the Philippines, considering it's aPresto-Type song. Good Job big time. I can understand the dialect used in the song coz i was born in a Visayan-speaking province.

To be completely honest, I'm not sure why our director chose this piece. We did Siyahumba, and Pseudo Yoik a few years back and our director just wanted us to be exposed to different cultures of music. :)

this is a cebuano filipino song. it is about a young beautiful lass who dances well and a young lad who admires her. while the girl dances during a fiesta, the boy would always watch her from afar, mesmerized and drooling at her beauty and grace ("nagtan-aw kang inday, nagtabisay ang laway")
fyi: my grandfather's brother, domingo "minggoy" lopez, a cebuano composer during the 60's and 70's wrote this song.---Mark Lopez, Cebu Phils.

well anyways im visayan and i came from davao del norte. everyone there (from what i can remember) who speaks this dialect calls themselves bisayan, but ive also heard it called cebuano as it is on this post. so im just wondering, is there actually any differnce in the dialect or is it just the name?
Very easy my friend. Visayan is a group of related(eg hilgaynon&ilonggo,cebuano&bohalo) and unrelated(ilonggo&waray) language and culture which came from visayas group of islands. You wouldnt be calling yourself visayan if you are from mindoro, right?
Cebuano by the way is a language in visayan group of languages. It might not be correct to say that you are a cebuano but not a visayan.
But bisaya is quite different, mostly cebuano speakers called themselves bisaya or bisdak which ilonggos argue that they are not.
Since there is no "v" in old abakada, Visayas and Bisayas is the same after all(might not true in present times). In is case all people which came from or having decended from this islands can be called bisaya.
most visayans are cebuano or its equivalent. about 5/8 of all visayans are cebuano (or its equivalent) we in davao speaks a dialect mutually intelligible with cebuano though we may not call it such bec the term cebuano speaks of a place (Cebu). but technically speaking, davao and most christian cities and towns n mindanao speaks cebuano.
I have seen to proofs about this concept..One is the movie starring Juday, i think the title was sakal sakali saklolo..the dialogue were the grandmother talks to the maid...Second proof is the White Glutathione commercial...airing and selling the product in Cebu and at the same time calling it a "PROBINSYA" since she cant get her skin to turn white in Cebu

Regardless of what you may think... you are considered to be from of the Philippines. Technically making you a FILIPINO. Although I may not agree about the ideas that my country has I still consider myself to be a proud citizen of the United States and not just a proud Californian. I have hundreds of cousins and friends who are from Cebu and consider themselves to be a PROUD Filipino.
it's different if you are living here in the Philippines. Well, try to ask your cousins if they consider themselves as Cebuanos than Filipinos. Most likely they would say, "I would probably love being a Cebuano than being a Filipino."
Well it's the same thing with states and cities in the United States. You may live in the United States but if were you actually were born and raised in New York for example, you would represent that city more so than your state.
So without the existence of the Philippines, there would be no islands, towns, barrios, whatever the terminology may be. =/
Good rendition of that song. The visayan lyrics must have been a real challenge to the singers. I will assume the lyrics were first interpreted to them before they even attempted to sing it.

Very good performance. My only other comment is that this is one of those pieces where the part of the lyrics "nagtan-aw kang inday" was changed to "nagtan-aw si inday". Doing so means, the girl (not the guy)is now the one looking and drooling. I prefer sticking to the original "kang inday" as it portrays the true story of the original composition, plus it's more fitting that a guy is the one who drools with excitement
Sounds really good, and i like the soprano descant. It's not in the original score but it adds an original touch. Although I think it would be better if it were added only to the repeat.
Dear CBHS Choir salamat! We are Visayan from an NGO (SOLFED Philippines) whose goal is to preserve our languages and we are so totally honored by your rendition of Rosas Pandan, so amazingly alive! In the Philippines, the non-Tagalog languages are not nationally recognized; consequently they are dying. If surveys are correct, the Cebuano Visayan language that you are singing in will be dead in 300 years. Words can hardly express it but in behalf of the Visayan peoples thank you so much!
I don't believe that Visayan Language will die... Because Filipino our national language recognize Visayan Language as one of the 8 major dialects in our country... The fact that people still use the language plus the emerging BISROCK (Bisaya Rock) proves that Visayan Language is not neglected... Linguists are conducting studies for Philippine dialects for them to preserve the 154 dialects in our country... BTW im a Language Student Studying Filipino language...
government "recognition" isn't enough. tangible support is what is needed. most filipino LANGUAGES beside Tagalog is being affected by diglossia. tagalog expands its literature and everyday use while non-tagalog native speakers are disapearing. if you really love the philippines, it's time to wake up and smell reality of imperial manila's subjugation of the "provinciano's" language and culture in exchange of the alleged united filipino identity which pretty much means- TAGALOG.
Visayan is not a dialect. If you are really a student of Language, you will know that Visayan is not mutually intelligible with any of the Tagalog variants. Visayan is a Language while Cebuaano, Waray-wary, Hiligaynon are DIALECTS of Bisaya.
I will reiterate, ad nauseam, since when did Bisaya become a dialect? It never has been one. It is a Language. You need to study more on Filipino Languages to realize that.
I think Cebuano is a language, not a dialect, and is one of the languages spoken in the Visayas region under the Visayan family of languages which also includes Ilonggo and Waray-Waray.
Cebuano sounds very expressive (like Italian, Greek or Spanish)and often misinterpreted by some Tagalog speakers as "hard" or sounding a bit angry. To me, Tagalog sounds somewhat timid and soft and lacks assertiveness. Just my opinion.

this is a cebuano filipino song. it is about a young beautiful lass who dances well and a young lad who admires her. while the girl dances during a fiesta, the boy would always watch her from afar, mesmerized and drooling at her beauty and grace ("nagtan-aw kang inday, nagtabisay ang laway")
fyi: my grandfather's brother, domingo "minggoy" lopez, a cebuano composer during the 60's and 70's wrote this song.---Mark Lopez, Cebu Phils.

the ingredient of truly cebuano. our culture is verse on music. filipino is broken down to relatively visayans language. thus far cebuano was colonized long before the entire philipinnes.

that was great. but ive noticed that there are a lot of people here arguing about "this and that", cebuano vs blah blah blah...
well anyways im visayan and i came from davao del norte. everyone there (from what i can remember) who speaks this dialect calls themselves bisayan, but ive also heard it called cebuano as it is on this post. so im just wondering, is there actually any differnce in the dialect or is it just the name?

Very easy my friend. Visayan is a group of related(eg hilgaynon&ilonggo,cebuano&bohalo) and unrelated(ilonggo&waray) language and culture which came from visayas group of islands. You wouldnt be calling yourself visayan if you are from mindoro, right?
Cebuano by the way is a language in visayan group of languages. It might not be correct to say that you are a cebuano but not a visayan.

But bisaya is quite different, mostly cebuano speakers called themselves bisaya or bisdak which ilonggos argue that they are not.
Since there is no "v" in old abakada, Visayas and Bisayas is the same after all(might not true in present times). In is case all people which came from or having decended from this islands can be called bisaya.

most visayans are cebuano or its equivalent. about 5/8 of all visayans are cebuano (or its equivalent) we in davao speaks a dialect mutually intelligible with cebuano though we may not call it such bec the term cebuano speaks of a place (Cebu). but technically speaking, davao and most christian cities and towns n mindanao speaks cebuano.

I have seen to proofs about this concept..One is the movie starring Juday, i think the title was sakal sakali saklolo..the dialogue were the grandmother talks to the maid...Second proof is the White Glutathione commercial...airing and selling the product in Cebu and at the same time calling it a "PROBINSYA" since she cant get her skin to turn white in Cebu

By the way whose accompaniment is this? It is somehow different from what the conductor taught us..esp. the obligato and I (or should i say the choir) was both taught to sing the song with a minus 1 or A cappella like CBHS Choir...MORE POWER TO YOU GUYS !

I have goosebumps listening to them singing the classic Cebuano song ROSAS PANDA. Just FYI this song is not in Tagalog but in Cebuano, a dialect in Central and Southern Philippines. Good job guys!

Come to think of it, people come here to watch and enjoy whatever... but to read all your comments/rants that has no bearing or whatsoever except for the language of the song just spoils the whole experience. I would suggest that you make a video presentation of your "dreamed republic" and see what it generates instead.

Regardless of what you may think... you are considered to be from of the Philippines. Technically making you a FILIPINO. Although I may not agree about the ideas that my country has I still consider myself to be a proud citizen of the United States and not just a proud Californian. I have hundreds of cousins and friends who are from Cebu and consider themselves to be a PROUD Filipino.

it's different if you are living here in the Philippines. Well, try to ask your cousins if they consider themselves as Cebuanos than Filipinos. Most likely they would say, "I would probably love being a Cebuano than being a Filipino."

Well it's the same thing with states and cities in the United States. You may live in the United States but if were you actually were born and raised in New York for example, you would represent that city more so than your state.
So without the existence of the Philippines, there would be no islands, towns, barrios, whatever the terminology may be. =/

Good rendition of that song. The visayan lyrics must have been a real challenge to the singers. I will assume the lyrics were first interpreted to them before they even attempted to sing it.

Very good performance. My only other comment is that this is one of those pieces where the part of the lyrics "nagtan-aw kang inday" was changed to "nagtan-aw si inday". Doing so means, the girl (not the guy)is now the one looking and drooling. I prefer sticking to the original "kang inday" as it portrays the true story of the original composition, plus it's more fitting that a guy is the one who drools with excitement

Sounds really good, and i like the soprano descant. It's not in the original score but it adds an original touch. Although I think it would be better if it were added only to the repeat.

Dear CBHS Choir salamat! We are Visayan from an NGO (SOLFED Philippines) whose goal is to preserve our languages and we are so totally honored by your rendition of Rosas Pandan, so amazingly alive! In the Philippines, the non-Tagalog languages are not nationally recognized; consequently they are dying. If surveys are correct, the Cebuano Visayan language that you are singing in will be dead in 300 years. Words can hardly express it but in behalf of the Visayan peoples thank you so much!

I don't believe that Visayan Language will die... Because Filipino our national language recognize Visayan Language as one of the 8 major dialects in our country... The fact that people still use the language plus the emerging BISROCK (Bisaya Rock) proves that Visayan Language is not neglected... Linguists are conducting studies for Philippine dialects for them to preserve the 154 dialects in our country... BTW im a Language Student Studying Filipino language...

government "recognition" isn't enough. tangible support is what is needed. most filipino LANGUAGES beside Tagalog is being affected by diglossia. tagalog expands its literature and everyday use while non-tagalog native speakers are disapearing. if you really love the philippines, it's time to wake up and smell reality of imperial manila's subjugation of the "provinciano's" language and culture in exchange of the alleged united filipino identity which pretty much means- TAGALOG.

Visayan is not a dialect. If you are really a student of Language, you will know that Visayan is not mutually intelligible with any of the Tagalog variants. Visayan is a Language while Cebuaano, Waray-wary, Hiligaynon are DIALECTS of Bisaya.
I will reiterate, ad nauseam, since when did Bisaya become a dialect? It never has been one. It is a Language. You need to study more on Filipino Languages to realize that.

I think Cebuano is a language, not a dialect, and is one of the languages spoken in the Visayas region under the Visayan family of languages which also includes Ilonggo and Waray-Waray.
Cebuano sounds very expressive (like Italian, Greek or Spanish)and often misinterpreted by some Tagalog speakers as "hard" or sounding a bit angry. To me, Tagalog sounds somewhat timid and soft and lacks assertiveness. Just my opinion.
