You should send this to NOAA. This is a VERY valuable video. Thanks for posting it. I lived in Mesa for seven years and NEVER so anything this intense. As global warming proceeds, we'll see more and more of these. Already, AZ is entering its normal period - what would be drought to us - and leaving the abnormal with what we think is the normal amount of precipitation.
@natural381: No, not a lot of bad weather at all. May-Aug. is just a lot of sunny, scorching (110+), dry, still weather. People say Jun-Aug. is our "monsoon" season, but weather stats say most of our yearly rain is in the Spring.
@MrAnonymous483: They usually happen during the summer monsoon seasons. They're usually much smaller. The last one I remember that was this size was in 1997.
@isurfu2ube: I'm no weather expert, but I think they're basically due to downdrafts from nearby storms. Given we're in the desert and in a drought (as always), the winds pick up the dust along with it.
@natural381: They're high winds of course, but not like a hurricane or tornado speeds. It's dangerous if you're driving because it's basically brown fog. Visibility drops to near zero within seconds. If you're just standing on the porch like I was - not dangerous.
@shadowfaxx1: Yeah it is difficult to breathe by the time it arrives - dust gets in everything, from your eyes, nose, mouth, hair... everything. You can still smell the dust everywhere a week later.
@JerryFromNewJersey There is really not much excitement here. There are fun things to do in AZ if you have the money to do so (such as travel & outdoor activities that are out of the city). Summer is bad down here for outdoor stuff. Pretty much the only thing to do in the city is...shopping. Compared to other states, the weather is really quite a yawn. I was born here in '89 and have always lived in AZ - I can say it might just be a fun place to visit for a weekend.
True! It wasn't a disaster, but when people down here get anything weather-related (besides sun, heat, no clouds, and more sun), we go bonkers with excitement and run to grab our cameras.
@stephanie1989az Not trying to sound like im bashing anyone but it seems like thats the most excitement you get out of Arizona huh? is there really anything fun to do down there?
That's very Ominous
