  • @thisisbrianful

    That is correct!

  • "roturner" *is* "right", "art" is subjec"tive"

    *

  • @Bloodydigger you're supporting roturner, yet your are mocking him at the same time?

  • @JamesTR4 my teacher ( piano ) said it was just like that

  • @Ormusn i can and i'm 10

  • @harutuniananna are you 10?were you going to play this after a 2 piece invention by Bach?

were you able to play Nocturne B-flat Minor ( which is not very hard for me )huh?

  • @mcrettable this song is by Chopin and i don't think Liszt was even alive at the time. This was on of his latest songs at the time.

And I just can't belive that i have to play this.I'm only 10.And i'm scared.i have to play this at a recital in June.JUNE!!!.

  • Bees!

  • Amazing =O

  • Did you know Liszt played this piece with right hand octaves at the correct tempo xD

  • @mcrettable impossible

  • @stoni90 not probable.. look it up ^^

  • someone make her play prokofiev .....

    such as

    sonatas 1-8

    concerto 2,3

  • cuanto pianista envidioso ronda por aqui.. :-)

  • surprised that she aint asian.

  • Yes, so what, it is quite fast, but you get a much better feel for the triplets, which is the focal point of this piece.

  • My god, I'm training on this etude.. and seeing Valentina playing this,, just makes me want to quit piano.. damn.

  • music its a language not a circus

  • @mpzstudio Music critics always try to make it appear as though speed has no place in music. The piece is meant to move fast. Pardon me if my mind does not think "slow and moderate" when playing a piece to mimic the antics of bees.

  • @hypacam12 I'm still thinking is too fast, if you speak too fast is dificult to understand what you're saying I mean ok we know who is valentina, this is not a critic to her, just trying to remind people that fastness is not virtuosity scuse me is my daily war with my students ;)

  • @mpzstudio ah, but you see, not all music tries to communicate a message, some music is just to mimic a situation or paint a picture. So, yes chopin's Op 25 no 2 should be played fast because its not a piece that speaks about bees, its a piece that expresses their nature (blindingly fast and erratic!). I don't see how this piece will remind anyone of a swarm of bees if its played at any speed lower than this.

  • How difficult is this to play actualy? I have seen the sheet and on the paper it doesn't look very difficult, but how is it in practice?

And is there any "easy way" to begin learning a piece like this one - or rather: what do I begin with if I want to learn this?

  • @harutuniananna The easiest way to learn this, is practicing every day a lot of technique, lots and lots :)

  • @josetex Actually I started to play Bach to be able to learn this :D

  • After having heard this Etude as a child when I saw the music for the first time I was confused lol

  • its funny becuase this is chopin's 'easier' etudes

  • Though this Étude may be depicting the soul of Chopin's betrothed Mario Wodzinska, the fact that it's sometimes called "The Bees" is not a surprise. I never knew about its nickname until now and before now I was always reminded of bees when listening to this. This Étude reminded me of Rimsky Korsakov's "The Flight Of The Bumblebee" and still does. Valentina, you play this Étude very well! :)

  • BRAVAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

  • She is so talented ... and smiling - her videos are a gift for everyone who likes Chopin's music.

According to Chopin himself, this étude depicts the soul of his betrothed, Maria Wodzinska, and not a swarm of bees.

  • faster please : )

  • Valentina Lisitsa!!! Can you please answer my question please please please? I want to play opus 10 no. 5 by chopin and i started it but idk if i can do it. can you check my video and tell me if you think im able? Pleaseeee!

  • to fast

  • I'm in love with this piano sound. It sounds in a certain way old and from another time. Great! Not to mention your musical and technical niveau. Thanks for sharing this with us!!!

  • I've listened to this video now a few times. As a professionel organbuilder and audio engineer I think that the piano is deliberately (is this the right word?) not 100% in tune (in each key itself), which makes the sound a little bit more "wide" and soft. It is hard to tell because of the minor quality on youtube. I love this sound, and when I have to buy a grand piano in the future, I will have a closer look at Bösendorfer.

  • It's not that she plays it too fast. That noone else can do this fast enough.

  • Lo escuche lento por primera vez cuando una niña lo estudiaba desde entonces me gusta lento y no rapido...alguien lo haria lento por mi?

  • man!!! she makes it look so easy :S

  • wer so Klavierspielen kann, kann nie wirklich unglücklich werden

  • WOW, amazing

i can lay this fast but not with this much intonation

    BRAVO

  • gorgeous playing by a gorgeous lady

  • Sheesh, it's pieces like this where your idedic memory probably comes in really handy o_O This looks like it's not anywhere close to just chromaticism -- it's like Chopin went out of his way to make these crazy scales as difficult to remember as possible.

  • she played this a lot faster than me.

  • Valentina~

I am in awe, you are such an amazing pianist. Where can I hear you play??

    Great job, as always!

    ~Violet~

  • I came to think of "Fantasie Impromptu", when I heard/saw you playing this etude a week ago;

it has been one of my favourites since childhood 60 years ago.

Have you done that one too on YouTube?

  • Yes, of course it *can* be played this fast. Stop "thinking" about it and just "listen" to it.....Piano playing isn't like chess; there are no "good" and "bad" moves.... Music is emotion..... Feel it.... If it "speaks" to you then it is *perfect* at this speed. Like many other works it's also *perfect* at other speeds too depending on what you want to convey.

  • @roturner good comment sir/lady. good comment

  • @roturner I do not think the same..we all know Chopin's (or anyone else!) music and people who play this piece should know what the composer wanted..and I think of the sound intensity and the tempo! In this case it IS a good tempo - just check the title! "The bees" - like the Humble bee :) But I do hate when somebody (just because he/she is a piano virtuoso) play' faster than the presrcibed to show his/her talent..

  • @mommyslittlemonsta But Chopin did not call this piece "the bees", did he?

  • @roturner I agree with you. The sheet music may say one thing, "Presto" as a tempo marking in this case. Yet, what would then be the point of all these pianists and artists and their interpretations and creations of music if they all strived for the same, original thought that Chopin had?

  • people for saying its too fast...i think valentina knows what shes doing and as she says its marked presto meaning quickly :)

  • @supergaybot It's right, I play it now and it's 112 presto, so Valentina played it perfectly! :)

  • absolutely beautiful. your fingers are so blithe and smooth on the piano

  • every second is like an orgas!m

  • Hermoso! :)

    Very nice, Valentina!

  • I wonder why nearly no pianist does respect the text in the right hand in this etude. there are two triolets for six notes and everybody plays three times two notes.

I wonder why... the written version is possible to play and sounds good....

  • not so good....no forte no piano..no nothing......sorry...

  • I play it at around the same speed now. Inspired by your version. :) I wish I had a teacher though that could get me improve my technique. Here's my version of the same etude (I'm not a music major, so don't be harsh on me, I do this during my free time): wwwDOTboxDOTnet/shared/t2kamep7kq (Replace DOT with an actual .)

  • Bravo.

  • I thought the triplets should be emphasized like ta-ra-ra- Ta-ra-ra Ta-ra-ra Ta-ra-ra and not like Ta-ra Ta-ra Ta-ra Ta-ra Ta-ra Ta-ra...I think i can hear the difference in the end of the first section... :S confused...

  • @JamesTR4

this is the same reason i looked up this video.i guess when you play this fast its all the same.

  • @Vampiresss8 true true

  • You are amazing!

  • Perfect :)

  • this is 1 of the easiest?

  • sounds just like a swarm of bees :)

  • I just would like to say that you are one of the most talented and blessed musicians on the face of this earth. When I'm listening to you, I feel as if my ear is being filled with a beautiful scenery, sunbeams, I don't know. Thank you.

  • I just learnt the piece.. am working on getting it up to speed. Any tip/advice that you can give me is highly appreciated but I don't expect a person as busy as you to be able to do this. Doesn't hurt to ask, does it? ;)

  • I tried to put in a link to my version of this but youtube doesn't accept links maybe?

  • @liszt85 When I started learning this, I practiced playing small snippets fast, even just half a bar at times, pretty soon you get the feel of it, and it comes. Good luck!

  • @cnlewis03 Thanks mate. I can now play it almost as fast as 'valentina does in this video but there are some inaccuracies that I'm still working on but I'm close :) Here's something I played a month ago (I'm much better now): h ttp://w ww.box.net/shared/zgmpyn7874

  • You're amazing!! I love to listen to your stuff!! :)

  • With my coffee, closing my eyes, and dreaming

    Ty Valentina :-)

  • I've played that before it was kinda hard

  • sounds Russian

  • What's her name ? @.@

  • wow!!!

    EXCELENT really super kiki^^

  • Amazing, I'm learning to play this one, and yes to those of you who think this is too fast - it's not to fast, it's just right. If you want fast, listen to Pollini play this song ;)

  • do you use the pedal?

  • When I first heard this, I thought of Fantasie Impromptu. This is a great etude. I see why the people of Vienna accused Chopin of playing too soft.

  • How long does it take to play a song like this

  • Just by listening to this I can tell: this is exactly how fast it should be played! Great!

  • i love how people continue doubting lisitsa's tempo, when she CLEARLY informed people three times that the tempo marking is presto, as is Op. 10 No. 4.

  • wowwwwwww

  • Valentina. This is a question to you. Are you coming to Vancouver to perform a concert this year of 2011? Because that will be amazing please.

  • Wow! Very Clear!!! BRAVOOOOOO>....<

  • Comment removed

  • My copy here indicates a metronome pace of: Minim (половинная нота) = 112.. Which is indeed this fast. I think if you're looking at the sheet music it looks slow to the eye - because it's all crotchets and quavers. Anyway.... I would think Valentina Lisitsa would be the expert and final word on the matter! ;-)

  • Personally I do not know this etude any slower. It is (as V notes) marked presto and it is a study for precision and speed in the right hand playing lots of notes close together. What VL dioes wonderfully is control it even at that tempo. It is fast, but doesn't sound rushed to my ears. That is the trick.

  • Sympathetic!

  • yes. this is very fast. i have score and this is like this.

  • Chopin is Very GOooD!

I mean,, how did he come up with this piece and how did he "TAUGHT" about the sound of this piece...

    he is so good!

and VALENtina played it So WELL! :P

  • she has great expression, but sometimes it seems like she runs the notes together. I really enjoyed it.

  • — Это и я так могу! — А что ж сыграть-то ? — ...Мурку!

    Здорово-здорово)

  • That was breath taking, I really like this piece.

  • you learned all the etudes

  • I just wish she could tell me the secret to getting the LH triplet crotchets timed correctly with the insane flurry of right hand quaver triplets!!! It is insanity! Valentina is brilliant...oh well back to the metronome for me...

  • @Chopianist3

If your being serious then the answer (for me) lies in practicing the piece with two metranome settings, one for the right hand and one for the left, practiced seperately and then together using the different MM speeds.

  • Thankyou for the suggestion! (Though may I suggest in the future using the reply button cause I didn't actually know you were helping me!) By the way I've figured it out now and actually find this quite an easy song to play :D

  • she's plays beautifully, but she looks like a zombie!

  • realy like this interpretation. Just would have liked it a bit more legato since it says 'molto legato'..

  • a comment to 635Passworte:

not the fingers are perfect but how she uses it and the hand and the arm......

do you have the special thing?

this is a perfect interpretation and absolutely incredible performance of all Chopin etudes. Who can do it better? you?

  • I just started this...Omg I have a lot of work...

  • this etude should be played as fast ? ( just asking I used to play it but really really slower thx for answering .) All your videos are amazing you play so well can't find words for describe how you make us feel. thx for all that great music you made keep going it's amazing.

  • Only 2 out of 24 marked Presto: this one and Op 10 #4

    V

  • I wonder why Chopin marked only a few of his pieces with Presto. Pretty much all of the fast ones Chopin gave a ridiculously fast metronome marking.

Btw, don't take any of my comments too too badly, You play wonderfully, some of the best Chopin playing I have ever heard. the critique is more of a mental excercise, a test of my musical understanding than a real critique.

  • @ValentinaLisitsa excellent... but why are your tags Richter, Wilhelm, Pollini, Backhaus and Ashkenazy if I may ask?

  • @ValentinaLisitsa Your performances of these Etudes are amazing to me. Especially your interpretation of Op.25 No.9, your hand goes so fast it really does look like a butterfly. You are my hero and absolute idol. Keep playing like you do.

  • @AmShagar in sheet music, most of the times it says what tempo it should be played, so with your metronome, you can find it out exaactly! I thought this one was 120 for the half note, so 6 notes of the right hand.

  • @AmShagar ...This piece is sometimes caleld "The Bees" of corse it's supposed to be fast

  • Pure perfection.

  • Класс!

    вспомнилось:

"-ну.... это и я так могу....

    - а что сыграть то ?

    - мурку !"

  • It's fun watching her technique. Her hand position looks like she would barely be able to sink into the keys but she gets such rich sound. Always loose, always flowing. As entertaining to watch as she is to listen to.

  • reminds me of one of his valses

  • i want to play it...im afraid now^^

  • she has perfect fingers but she doesnt have the speciall thing...

  • composed between 1831 and 1836, superb etudes vy guabt Franz Liszt

  • ...i aint playin the song for a long time cus i dont really like it that much

  • good for you

  • Valentina Lisitsa i'm really very happy for hear ur playing ..you are very beautiful!! Thnak you for this videos .I hope u are ok for ever;)) Obeid.

  • Wonderful technique.

  • Valentina... very very very well done :)

I think you can show Horowitz how to play this piece, or even S. Richter :)

  • I love your way to play the piano. you are best and beautiful

  • Comment removed

  • ohh, okeyy...i was just asking because i'm working on chopin lately and the speed of this etude attracted me....thanks for the clarification...ur the best!

  • that's excellent.but, valentina, should it be played that fast? i think it's too fast for chopin.

  • Presto ??? Only this one and Op 10 #4 marked Presto...

    V

  • @ValentinaLisitsa

I agree entirely. This is alla breve, and presto. You'd be hard pressed to play it too fast.

  • @ValentinaLisitsa You play it excellently. The presto tempo gives it just enough lightness it needs! Regards!

  • I think, its the right pace. Its one of those etudes, i think, which can stand even a higher pace, like the Etude No.2 in a minor.

  • @CharbelChopin well you should watch etude op 10 no 4 and especially no 5, my friend :P

  • @CharbelChopin Too fast for Chopin? This is perfect speed, you have to bare in mind that it is marked presto. She plays so amazingly, it's like Chopin's taken control of her.

  • @CharbelChopin take notice of Alfred Cortot, played it even faster!

  • @CharbelChopin ive seen people play it even faster, i quite like this tempo.

  • i wish i could play that well

  • I don't think it's meant to have "melody and sadness." It's an exercise. Valentina, you're a goddess of the piano!

  • I know in theory the etudes are exercises, but there's not much doubt Chopin raised them above mere finger workouts. His etudes are both wonderfully virtuosic and pulsing with emotion. Just listen to Op.10, No.4 or No.12. They're intense displays of romanticism!

  • Nevertehless, it is wrong to maintain this etude should be played slowly lest Chopin's "melody and sadness" get lost. It's like saying that "Für Elise" must be played harshly because otherwise you don't convey Beethoven's outburtst of passion ;-)

  • why does Chopin put "presto" in the scores? actually, we don't know presto how fast is it according to Chopin. (it could be terribly fast maybe...)

  • One tradition is to play the entire measure in one 'beat' if the tempo is Presto.

  • She is brilliant, no doubt about it, but this is played too fast. You're right

  • Chopin: Presto - the only Presto other then Op 10 #4 :)

  • Yea =]

  • @ValentinaLisitsa You're right if a song says "Presto" (which, for any others who may not know what that means, means basically as fast as possible) you should PLAY it Presto! Although in PianoPhase345's defense, it did sound like you were playing it Prestissimo! Wow!

  • I'm inclined to agree (12th is best), although the 11th is very good as well. Would depend on what mood, or drug I was on.

  • fav etude of opus 25.

  • No way, op.25 no.12 is the best ! =)

  • Maybe you're right ^^

  • I second that.

  • you know what my favorite etude of op 25 its no 7. the melodie is just beautifull, and the dipness withing it is almost unatural. Valentina lisitsa and maurizio pollini have the best versions
