What power! Gigli had a wonderful voice too but when listen to this recording followed immediately by Gigli's recording of the the same song it isn't even close. Del Monaco's voice is exceptional!
@crapfacejoe Dear Joe, I agree, However Del Monaco did bring his usual dramatic interpretation to this Montovanni rendition which always made him unique and interesting.Enjoy
There is a voice for every taste. The critics often gave him a rough time, yet he is hailed as one of the great ones. A special voice. And one particular day, in one particular mood, his voice might be just right - then of course tomorrow the mood might change. Then another voice will suit you better. But to deny his talent as huge is not only wrong but depressing.
@luiszaoo i agree he looks kind of strange in this video, but check out other videos with him, they are much better. I think there's something wrong with this video

T here is no voice in all of opera like this one. For a dramatic tenor to have this kind of heart and musicality is just astonishing. As much as I love DiStefano, Caruso, Gigli, this might be the most extraordinary rendition of them all. I just love Del Monaco.
Yeah, they said on stage he could scare the hell out of you. Completely lacking any Neapolitan romanticism here, but God, that voice had a Titan rocket stapped to it!!

When one just listens to del Monaco here, without watching his facial expressions and body movements, one might realize how the vocal interpretation lacks emotions and expression. This is why I like Pavarotti most of the time - his interpretation is based mainly on singing, not acting, and this is what actually differs opera artist from a theater actor. I'm surprised at the vitriol that some use in their discussion of the tenors. Del Monaco is a miraculous artist: his power is undeniable. But he finds the heart and emotion in most everything he does. Yes, his voice is so powerful that it sometimes overwhelms those sublime, intimate moments that DiStephano and Bjorling find. That's the trade-off of the lyric v. dramatic tenor: there is no perfect interpretation of any aria. Mario left a legacy of greatness. I enjoy them all.

Bravo
del Monaco was not very well received by most music critics...they said he was shouting instead of singing...and for sure he was megalomaniacal as he declared himself the gratest tenor that ever lived only equaled maybe by Caruso...very funny man...

lol chris, how u can say that "his voice was not made for that"?...lol are u joking? just listen to him...u can feel the power in his voice! and he for sure was much more better than Pavarotti...and sure Pavarotti was a gr8 one but his voice was really without power and feelings.
this isnt about singing with full power...MDMs voice is not lyrical enough...to loud..to heavy for this kind of stuff --- MDM was great for heavy roles like Otello but not for lyrical singing...the different voice classifications for tenors have some reason... with this particular piece I much prefer Lanza for example...or Gigli..or DiStefano...the 2 are more lyrical while Lanza is more spinto-lyrical...MDM is just "loud" sometimes but still great...no mistake about that...
...he sang Otello 218 times...as Magda Olivero says on wiki...he was a metallic hard edged voice that could not sing piano...he crushed phrases, and instead of poured golden honey, his voice was hard metal pounding, like a blacksmith....and yet, yes, he was one of the great dramatic tenors...
Actually, he sang Otello over 420 times and there are many examples of MDM singing piano and "musically" as the effeminate critics of today like to call it.
@bposton242 At last someone that knows what is talking about...thanks for your words, I appreciate.
As my 2 cents, i just wished to add that today there's a lot of voices that just aren't able to use their whole vocal range as Del Monaco did.
He himself admitted that after singing Otello for about a lifetime, you must forget some "softness". It's not like he couldn't, it's just a matter of choice.
Anyone who criticises him should try show a better one...
@bposton242 So if you aren't pleased with a singer shouting all over the place you are 'effeminate'. It's true that the critics of today dismiss delMonaco, I used to like him myself, but every time you listen to another tenor singing his parts, he will get more and more impossible. The only way you can go on liking his interpreatations is by never listening to any of the others. Even Corelli will sound subtle after a while. And yes, he could sing less loud, sadly he did so very seldom.
As Magda Olivero also says on Wikipedia he admitted he found it hard to sing gently. Corelli also said this about Del Monaco and said it was because he used a very low larynx . I think there is room for all kinds of tenor, but I do find him a bit relentlessly loud. Can you reccommend a video where he sings with subtle dynamics? It seems silly to suggest anything other than fortissimo singing is "effeminate" (and I think some wagnerian sopranos would take issue with this definition)
@orlando098 YOU CAN TRY SOME OF THE FORZA DEL DESTINO ARIAS . HE DOES MEZZA VOCE AND MORE LYRC SINGING . HE IS REALLY MY FAVORITE IN THAT OPERA WITH CORELLI A CLOSE SECOND. SOLENNE IN QUEST ORA IS ONE OF THE ARIAS
Saludos.
Why did Catari get the hell out of Naples? At first I thought it was because she was feeding the priesteen the secrets of the marriage bed -- tittle-tattle for the Pope and his cats! But I was wrong. It seems she got to see the latest film on the Camorra! Between the Priesteen and the Mafia, she had no choice... but to hightail it to Milano...where she has settled with a hairy Polack who has actually read Francesco Carotta and Joseph Atwill...Free at last!
inspite of the quality of the recording, for me it's by far the best rendition of Core 'ngrato... it's not just the voice, it's the emotion, the passion... I'm under the impression he "feels" this song considerably better than most other tenors I've heard. bravissimo.
@octopussy51 vOLEVO DIRE DI NON ESSERE DACCORDO CON LA TUA OPINIONE IN BASE A DEL MONACO TENORE DI FORZA. LA SUA EMISSIONE ERA SI MOLTO FORTE MA USAVA IL SUO STRUMENTO SEMPLICEMENTE COME FACEVANO TUTTI I GRANDI CANTANTI.CON IL DIAFRAMMA E SENZA OSTACOLI DI GOLA.I TENORI DI FORZA DELL'800 USAVANO SI IL DIAFRAMMA MA NON DAVANO SUFFICENTE SPAZIO AL FIATO, COSì è NATO IL TENORE DI FORZA, FINO A QUANDO ENRICO CARUSO LO HA INSEGNATO A TUTTI .
Mario del Monaco is lip-synching to a one of the tracks he recorded with Mantovani and his Orchestra -- "A Song For You " -- re-released as "The World's Greatest Love Songs" in Sept 1962(SKL 4510).Available in the 5 Disk set Mario del Monaco:Decca Recitals 1952--1969.He starts full blast/note perfect with the 2nd verse "Cor'n grato" not the "Catari, Catari" verse as many do.
The unmistakable Mantovani Orchestra has a few bars. It is a pity that he should choose to lip synch to a TV audience.
jaaaaakob..... check out my response back to you on your own blog....I will give you a commentary too, if you are brave enough to share your Birth Month Year----
--- one more comment,, I forgot to mention ,, Being the owner of a FALSE, made up Hollywood name has an adverse effet on ones Life..Proof of this, is Biblical. example: Sarai to Sarah~ Abram to Abraham~ Saul-Paul..& Simon-Peter.. These were changed by God,Mario's by MAN...your birth name is important for your identity. Ther is meaning and effect on a person by their NAME. Mario Lanza real name is Alfredo Arnold Cocozza.
..lastly... the LOVE nature of these men. LANZA=Venus in Pisces-In loves with love itself..an imagination filled with wild dreams of passion....this is where God comes in, we all have weakness.. but God is our strength as we access his help in our this area. it CAN get us in trouble.,~Mario DelMonaco=Venus in Cancer=Nurturing,Homeloving, mothering love.. He loves to cater to and fuss over you. Loving a woman who Cooks for him. a mother type. one who gives much attention -
..continuing~Mario Del Monaco-Sun in Leo=basic Happy nature"sunny",natually secure & confident, but gets hurt easily, proud like a lion. Birth placement = his Emotions( moon at 21 degrees Aquarius donates nature geard to the publicservice & Off beat eccentic type emotions. The combo of fire(Leo & Air(mental/thinking) reflects comfidence example: "the Hero"the conqueror" "The happy ending to a Victory"~ Both artist are wonderful~ Monaco sings with a smile at times, Lanzo is serious longing look.
now here is the scoop on the two differences: Mario Lanza: Aquarius character= humain loves people and reaches out ~ his inner emotions comes from his placement of the MOON in space 20 degrees Scorpio..this is your Feeling Emotion, sadness, intense deep & into your soul sound. A broken heart sound.. this is what people relate to who have this empty, unfullfilled longing for deep romantic love.. there's a connection, also his face reveals that too..... next.......Mario Del Monico
.. rember to keep in mind.. the recording qualities as your listening to various Tenors.. and the age of the recording..many vocalist tday sound horrible without the aid and trickery of todays's enhancement e\technology... continued....
Yes I agree with the pitch and he effortlessly executes the volume .. His voice tone is not a sad feeling sound,, it's a courageous, controled confident sound... Mario Lanzo, is, to me equal, but for different reasons...He Has an earthy, emotion, with Long Long extensions on his note holding.... with romantic, sadness, in otherword,, you will Cry over his song... Monico. sings with a smile.. Mario sings with a lonley , longing heart.. and I know why these differences are so.........
Great tenor, great voice. We have become used to the milder versions of the 3 tenors (et all...) and many forgot what was real singing vs. "mickey mouse tenoring", now if Villazon learns to take good care of himself we will hear good singing again.
In my opinion you have some reason for this song: his voice sounds "too metallic". This kind of singing is perfect for some repertoires.
My teachers told me about mainly two ways of singing: this is what you will learn in the "Italian school": sing strong, open mouth, clear. The "German school" is dense sound, with round mouth.
For me this song is ok, but maybe the sound should be a bit softer but still clear. The reverberation is too high in this recording and this reduces the quality.
I agree this is not the best recording of the great man. You will enjoy his interviews where he expresses his philosophy of singing and talks about the difficulty of singing Neapolitan songs.
It is also very interesting to see and hear one of his favourite students- Oscar Mancino. A great testament to MDM's ability to transmit his knowledge and his passion.
jesus... this voice is inhuman! too bad there isn't a better audio recording... actually, I wonder if it is possible to find his recordings in a remixed/remastered version?
All the Mafia comments are really insulting. You claim to "love" Del Monaco, and then insult him repeatedly. He was an artist, not a Mafioso. P.S. In case you didn't know, most Italians have no connection to organized crime whatsoever.

gustajavier 3 years ago

I'm under the impression he "feels" this song considerably better than most other tenors I've heard. bravissimo.
TSpike73 3 years ago
I don't know...Corelli does a FANTASTIC job with this song... as well as Carreras, despite his lack of control of the Bb at the end.

Mario Lanza real name is Alfredo Arnold Cocozza.
alex9nanc 3 years ago
you talk so much bullshit, it's actually disturbing.

..lastly... the LOVE nature of these men. Loving a woman who Cooks for him. a mother type. one who gives much attention -
alex9nanc 3 years ago
..continuing~Mario Del Monaco-Sun in Leo=basic Happy nature"sunny",natually secure & confident, but gets hurt easily, proud like a lion. Birth placement = his Emotions( moon at 21 degrees Aquarius donates nature geard to the publicservice & Off beat eccentic type emotions. The combo of fire(Leo & Air(mental/thinking) reflects comfidence example: "the Hero"the conqueror" "The happy ending to a Victory"~ Both artist are wonderful~ Monaco sings with a smile at times, Lanzo is serious longing look.
alex9nanc 3 years ago
now here is the scoop on the two differences: Mario Lanza: Aquarius character= humain loves people and reaches out ~ his inner emotions comes from his placement of the MOON in space 20 degrees Scorpio..this is your Feeling Emotion, sadness, intense deep & into your soul sound. A broken heart sound.. this is what people relate to who have this empty, unfullfilled longing for deep romantic love.. there's a connection, also his face reveals that too..... next.......Mario Del Monico
alex9nanc 3 years ago
.. rember to keep in mind.. the recording qualities as your listening to various Tenors.. and the age of the recording..many vocalist tday sound horrible without the aid and trickery of todays's enhancement e\technology... continued....
alex9nanc 3 years ago
Yes I agree with the pitch and he effortlessly executes the volume .. His voice tone is not a sad feeling sound,, it's a courageous, controled confident sound... Mario Lanzo, is, to me equal, but for different reasons...He Has an earthy, emotion, with Long Long extensions on his note holding.... with romantic, sadness, in otherword,, you will Cry over his song... Monico. sings with a smile.. Mario sings with a lonley , longing heart.. and I know why these differences are so.........
alex9nanc 3 years ago
Jejeje que voz!!

Great tenor, great voice. We have become used to the milder versions of the 3 tenors (et all...) and many forgot what was real singing vs. "mickey mouse tenoring", now if Villazon learns to take good care of himself we will hear good singing again.

you all people evaluating how good or how bad it can be. there's no exact property for nothing. understandd ittt. it all depends how you feel with.
relambetrampolin 3 years ago
I think MDM is one of the greatest, but this song is too romantic for him. His voice seems to be slowed down =holding his horses=.
Better to let it go free towards the universe like in Pagliacci, Chenier, Otello, Trovatore , etc. Thank you.
bellatrix58 3 years ago
Hey folks, this is not screaming. The man had a big big voice. And a beautiful one at that. And Core'n grato was not meant for mickey mouse tenors!
Y oigami, Gerardeus, Del Monaco nunca estaba "Mafioso".
lacarusina 3 years ago
Gerardeus 3 years ago
Whoa!
lacarusina 3 years ago
I used to like Mario. The more I listen the more I understand that he is basically screaming all the time..
No beautiful singing, just screaming.
maxhansendk 3 years ago
In my opinion you have some reason for this song: his voice sounds "too metallic". This kind of singing is perfect for some repertoires.
My teachers told me about mainly two ways of singing: this is what you will learn in the "Italian school": sing strong, open mouth, clear. The "German school" is dense sound, with round mouth.
For me this song is ok, but maybe the sound should be a bit softer but still clear. The reverberation is too high in this recording and this reduces the quality.
criquete 3 years ago
I agree this is not the best recording of the great man. You will enjoy his interviews where he expresses his philosophy of singing and talks about the difficulty of singing Neapolitan songs.
It is also very interesting to see and hear one of his favourite students- Oscar Mancino. A great testament to MDM's ability to transmit his knowledge and his passion.

All the Mafia comments are really insulting. You claim to "love" Del Monaco, and then insult him repeatedly. He was an artist, not a Mafioso. P.S. In case you didn't know, most Italians have no connection to organized crime whatsoever.
carlissima28 4 years ago
Gerardeus 4 years ago
carlissima28 4 years ago
Ahora entiendo. Saludos!
