  • one of the best guitar solo i have seen. seenhim in odessa tx in the latr 70s

  • One of the best live albums of all time.

    Frank was the man!

  • I saw him in 78 at Hirsch Collesium in Shreveport La. Local radio station Q 92 or something was selling tickets for $2.(92) to ensure people would come out for part of his live album recording..I had never heard of the guy, I certainly have never forgotten him .Marino is in a class of his own PERIOD!

  • This is almost too good.

  • Frank Marino owns this bitch

  • comparing marino to hendrix is apples and oranges at the end of the day.

if jimi were still around, they would prolly be buds and hang out all the time.

  • This doesn't hold a candle to hendrix's version.

  • Frank Marino was the first one to ever take this standard rock and roll tune to a whole different level. Also when people think of extreme vibrato or "whammy bar" effects, players like Satriani or others come to mind. As you can see, Frank used this high powered vibrato arm effect before anybody else, and did so within the context of the song.

  • playing licks Hendrix could only dream of? are you fucking for real?wake up moron !

  • Definatly the best version ever with all do respect to Chuck!

  • Go Johnny Go Go Go everytime im speeding Frank Marino lights up my radio :D

  • how I wish I was there. Everything about the song sounds so perfect that you don't believe it is a live cover. True talent!

  • Top 3 live Rock albums of the 70's in no specific order: Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush Live, Frampton Comes Alive, YesSongs.

    IMO

  • I think that his California Jam 2 version of this in 1978 is even better than this!!!

  • think that his California Jam 2 version of this in 1978 is even better than this!!!

  • Yeah, nice hendrix rip-off.

  • @Ingersh

Except he's playing licks Hendrix could only dream about...Hendrix was great by the way, I' m not arguing that but if you do something better than the original its not 'ripping it off'..

  • sweet memory... am 50 yo now and feel young again... thanks so much for posting!

  • Back when rock was rock

  • Frank The Man....

  • Almost thirty years I`ve listened this and still -I feel- this is the most toughest rockenroll song/cover I`ve ever heard. Ugh.

  • @hunterwmcleod it definitely rivals the orignal

  • @hunterwmcleod U>!!!

  • its a great song u cant beat it

  • I used to drive my sister crazy with this stuff. It's a shame, but there are many people who love this kind of music that have never heard of him. I have 6 of his vinyls, but some of it is hard to find on CD.

  • La meilleure version de "Johnny Be Good" tous guitaristes et autres déconneurs confondus pour mes oreilles averties. Non, là y a pas photo! Amusez vous bien!!

  • THIS IS A HEAVY MEDAL VERSION OF JOHNNY BE GOOD. THIS IS NOT A ROCK-AND-ROLL VERSION. IF I WAS ON HEAVY DRUGS I WOULD LOVE THIS VERSION. IT'S COOL THOUGH, JUST DIFFERENT.

  • Check out King Bee/Backdoor Man". Some of the hottest blues guitar I've ever heard.

  • who said SG's sound shit??...frank and angus beg to differ!

  • One of amazingly forgotten and unknowable album of the rockenroll -80`s:f.m.&M.S. LIVE

  • Puttin Eddie and the rest in the DIRT way back in the mid 70s.. as a kid, I Worshiped Frank.. decades before it was cool. He remains and will always be... without a doubt... the first and best shredder.

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks for posting.

  • lets kill the 4 ppl who didnt like this.... wtf samatta whichu!!!!

  • Frank Marino still owns the Best Trill ever... check out "Talkin' Bout A Feeling" on this very album... not a bad trill on this track and Purple Haze either...

  • Le plus explosif "Johnny be Goode" à mon goût ! Pas de samplers, computers et autres bidouilles techniques, juste les tripes et un monstre savoir-faire guitaristique. Géant!!!

  • yeah baby! this is one of my favorite versions of Chucks song - Jimi Hendrix - Johnny Winter - Marty Mcfly - one of the best rock - n roll songs EVER - Thanks Chuck Berry!

  • This is rock people !!!

  • I liked his version of Purple Haze (this version was actually better than Hendrix to SOME) and of Johnny B Goode the best of all his work.

  • Somebody please let me know lyrics of second verse. I can't hear that.

  • Frank does Jimi doing Chuck.

2nd best cover of this tune IMO. I wore the grooves off this vinyl in the 70s.

  • Frank Marino is arguably one the best rock guitarists in the world..Saw him 30 years ago and 1 year ago and still haven't seen anyone that matches his skills technically or melodically.

  • This is real Rock'n Roll!

Absolytely same thougth's with "wilmaman" Franks is one of the best!

  • @wilmaman I have to agree with 100%...

  • Great rendition of a classic!!!

    be well, happy, and peaceful

    Bela Ray

  • Where can I get some of what Johntcolo is smokin ? Name one great guitarist thats come out of Denver (besides Johnny Smith )

  • Of course Frank was influenced by JH but i think what seperates the two is franks creaitivitiy starting at 3:02 and if thats not enough listen to the cal jam 2 version of johnny b goode ill gurantee u will be proudly walking with ur dick in ur hand.

  • When I first heard 4:09 to 4:20 I just smiled. I know Jimi did unimaginable things, but that inimative lead-work and the whole band sound is why, after 30 years, I still get goose-bumps when I hear this.

  • Yes he's tearing up Jimi's version. but he makes it his own in this song.

  • while he IS covering a Chuck Berry song, he's doing more of a cover of Jimi's rendition of Johnny B Goode.

Frank is great, but this proves how awesome Hendrix was...not even Frank can intermix both Rhythm and Lead like he did....

I'd agree with the video poster that this may be the best version of the song, if it wasn't for the fact that there's a video on YouTube of Jimi tearing this song up.

  • mytube's got it right. This version is better than most, but pales compared to Hendrix's version, which is friggin' spectacular. Frank plays fast and loud. Hendrix napalmed the sucker.

  • Saw Frank play an indoor at Redondo Beach California in 1994. Maaaan Some guys can jam but Frank puts it where it belongs all night long. Frank Marino alway was and will always be the greatest.

  • FRANK MARINO IS THE GREATEST GUITARIST IN THE WORLD.

    Rajesh Semrete Selassie Aggarwal

  • watch awesome tibetan guitarist (from switzerland?!), he will blow you away! just look for "purtag" (his name)

  • Frank is the real deal! Old school muscle and panache' applied to a timeless classic!

  • this is an awesome song :D

  • exciting!!

  • oh yeah!

  • i've always sorta liked frank's stuff but, it's total whitebread.

  • Another great cover version! From an underestimated fellow-Montrealer, guitarist.Nice job!

  • superb

    blew everybody away

port vale football ground aug 1st 1981

  • He never got the recognition he deserves. Awesome guitarist!!!!

  • One of the best guitarist ! Awesome and clean on speed ! But that's just Minor Pentatonic scales.

  • i take it most of you never got to see Frank he was great one of the best shows i ever saw try to get concert footage and you will see later rockers

  • Hendrix on steroids style of guitar playing. Classic.

  • カリフォルニアジャム2だっけ?2枚組み!

    なついっス!

    ライナー渋松じゃなかったけ?

    UPどもデス☆

    日本語じゃわかんないかwww

  • What???

  • Crank it up louder my friend!

  • I had this on 8-track and played it on my Pioneer Supertuner in my 68 Firebird on my way to highschool in 79! lol! Still and AWESOME jam!

  • Ahh, I remember listening to 'Electric reflections of War' loudly on complete stereo separation in my brothers' living room, hearing all the guitar screeches and explosions (Stoned at the time) and thinking WOW, What the F**k!. He said later, listen to Johnny B. Goode, and I said, 'I have heard Johnny B. Goode so many times, that I don't think 'Johnny' can BE good anymore. I was wrong. Great cut! My favorite song from F. Marino is 'Man at the back door.' Anybody heard it? Thanx raulsanchez777!!!

  • "...talking 'bout a man that's as cold as ice..." -very cool track, man! Hell yes, Frank knows how to bring the sonic, face melting bliss like no other!

  • ... Mahogany Rush IV recording- very cool album for the song "Man At The Back Door"- I was always blown away by Frank's live playing as he really cuts loose like no other (still feel it strong to this day!), but as of late, I really do appreciate his playing on his many studio releases as well; so much imagery and texture to his vision.

  • Killer track, man! Love that album.

  • The Greatest BluesRock Guitarplayer Ever

  • Yes, Frank IS the most wailing guitarist on the planet!! He still has that old magic!

  • Can't wait to see Frank tomorrow 8-29-08 in SA Texas

  • Best version of this song I've heard.

  • This man's guitar talent is truly amazing! You the man Frank!

  • that was just stupid :)

  • La meilleure version de Johnny B.Good que mes oreilles aient entendu. Bravo et Good Luck!

  • I saw him back in the 70s at day on the green 3 "Monsters of rock" Best band there

  • I was there, it was awesome!! it rained shortly before Frank came on then the clouds parted and out came one of the best rocking shows I have ever seen. Aerosmith sucked, but Ted Nugent came out after a lot of people left and tore it up, great day in Oakland!! Thanks for the memory's

  • The reason Frank Marino is not more famous is because he refused to let record companies take advantage of him. After a few albums in the 70's and early 80's, he cut ties and went out on his own. Shame for the guitar fan, though. Sooo many people have missed out on his genius. Just listen to this! And pick up a copy of the original live album. That will tell you all you need to know.

  • @Roadrage9696

This live album is the reason I got into Marino. A friend taped me a copy almost 20 years ago, and it blew my mind. Frank deserves much more credit than he's gotten.

  • @Roadrage9696

    yep totally well said

  • i've just discover frank marino tonight and WOOW!! what a guitarist! Weird that he's not more famous!

I want to play like him:p

  • I remember MR backing up Nazareth at the Pacific Coliseum decades ago.

He did a wicked version of the Friendly Giant theme!

  • The Cal Jam II double live album is also out of print. I wore out 4 of them trying to learn what he was doing back in 77.

  • I am also a fan and have been playing 33 years.

  • As much as I absolutely love this material,.grew up on it and all,..I heard he is very difficult to deal with.Yes, he should have more recognition,..but if you are difficult to work with,..how far can you go?

  • yah....it's called genius. Only Hendrix would have said this guy could do him better.... to my dying day, i'll swear hearing this guy or Montrose lead me on the path of desire that will never be quenched.....listen to the soft parts fed into a blazing Marshall stack long before money could be spent to make it work? the guy was a genius, and he suffered the wrath of his commitment to his art. i'll bet he doesn't have a lot of money, but his conscience is clear.

  • This guy never sold out!!

    The best rock guitarist!

  • Though this is killer the absolute best version of this tune is on the Cal Jam 2 album. I have played guitar for 30 years and consider myself excellent with playing pinch harmonics but the Cal Jam 2 solo to this day leaves me saying " Uh...WHAT???" Why this man is not more revered for his abilities is beyond me. The " Juggernaut " album is one of the best yet least heralded rock albums of all time.

  • I agree that the Cal Jam II versions of King Bee, Johnny B Goode and Electric Reflections of War are the best versions ever. However, they are not the actual original versions as he played them. All 3 were heavily edited as I have a copy of the actual board mix from Franks set at that show. Many additional solo parts he played during all 3 were dropped and the songs were shortend. The octaves he played in JBG were done using an octive pedal Frank designed.

  • gregg, i was not aware of the octave pedal he used...NOW I understand how he got those beyond-detuned sounds that couldn't have just been achieved with a whammy bar. Yowsa!

  • Yeah I remember when I first heard the album I took it to my guitar teacher to learn things off of it at that time and I tried to tell him that Frank was picking all those octaves.Of course I was only playing a few years so I didn't know much.I remember him looking at me and laughing saying "if he can pick octaves like that with that speed I'll shake his hand".He meant it in fun but he was right.Frank also played wireless back then...he had one designed by his tech way back in the 70's.Amazing

  • This is THE BEST version of "Johnny B. Goode awright! When he solos, it's almost like into oblivion, simply pure technique, awesome!

  • i saw this dude live in beaumont texas in 1976 and this was the same shit he played then,he blew my freakin mind, one of the best for sure

  • also dobbylad did black sabbath back out has co headliners ,frank blew everybody away, seem to think he had a very cool leather jacket that day

  • i don't remember the leather jacket but i remember ozzie slagging off sabbath, also having to dodge bottles of piss being thrown from/into the stands and the Motorhead bomber light show, i seem to remember they had parachutist landing in the footie ground, in 82 i went to Mildenhall speedway track to see Saxon, Samson, magnum, angelwitch and Bernie Marsdens s.o.s. Hawkwind should have headlined there but they pulled out and Saxon headlined that was a brilliant day too

  • i saw frank in England in 1981 at port vale football club in stoke on trent, he opened with roadhouse blues on the same bill was Vardis, Triumph (they are Canadian too i think) ozzie osbourne with the blizzard of oz (randy rhodes r.i.p) and motorhead headlined it cost about 10 quid to get in well worth it, lng live rock n roll

  • I saw this band in D.C. in about '77 or'78 for $1.01!! at the Warner Theater.

  • Frank must have been having a hot night!

  • I still live in his old neighbourhood here in Park-Ex,Montreal.I heard this song today on CHOM FM and I'm hearing it again now.

Way to go Frank! Awesome job!

  • Where does he live these days?

  • CHOM is still around! Damn, I listened to CHOM from Ottawa in the 70's

  • CHOM FM jeez I used to listen to that Great radio station while working up and down The Great Lakes in the early 80's. It blew any European radio station away! I should have stayed instead of travelling the world........

  • que bueno que existe buen rocanroll me encanta esta de lujo

  • i start to listen to frank in the early 80 in a little town in sweden and 20yers later still listen to frank. Frank the best R&R player still!

    (sorry for mi bad spelling)

  • I hear you brother. I started listening in the 80's as well. He is so underrated. Frank can really lay it down.

  • oh man what a bummer. I thought i was gonna see a live clip and you just posted the song from the old "Live" album with a picture. Why fuckin' bother.

  • I wish I had a video of that concert also. Frank was the master of sound and strong, powerful licks. Not many can play like him, maybe Neal Shon from Journey.

  • just listen to the tune man.....and chill out.

  • Frankie-be-Goode !!!! WOOOOO

  • yea... guys like frank marino and kim mitchel didnt get the respect they deserve . ,... they got mine .

  • He came to Phoenix; I friggin missed it, but my buddy Richard "Guitar" Maack said it was life changing; it should be Frank and the gan never got the attention or the fans here in the U.S. they should have; he still is kicking ass and this song proves it!

  • In 40 years of playing shows and recording, I had never heard this version. Nice!

I always think of Jonny B Good as THE single sperm that impregnated and gave birth to R&R.

This song has been celebrated by all of us players. This was a great version.

My all-time favorite version is Judas Priest's.

    GO Frank that was great!

  • gone in orbit

  • Frank never got the respect that he deserves.R&R...Still Smokin Frank:-)

  • warp speed rock on

  • for 30 years every time i pick up my guitar i think of franks version of this song thanks for memorys Raul! ROCK ON!

  • Great stuff....thanx!

  • I saw Frank and Mahogany Rush at Giants Stadium in 1979 or 1980. He opened with this song. This is one of the best live rock albums of all time. Instead Frampton Comes Alive got all the attention. There is no comparison. Teens today should listen to this. It's funny when Frank says at the end: "got a joint".

  • simply the best/....

  • This album absolutely blew me away when I bought as a kid of thirteen yrs. old. Electric Reflections of War was my main inspiration to pick up a guitar and learn to play. Frank forever!

  • will he ever tour again

  • Awesome stuff man it was 1978 for me when I heard this jam. I still had long hair. Makes me feel like getting wasted!!!lol

  • WOW thank you

  • wooow!!!

  • Absolutely, positively F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-C!!!! I haven't heard this in probably 22 years. Last time was on vinyl. God bless whoever found a good quality recording and posted this for us all to hear. Some things sound so good there's no video necessary!

  • See with your ears. CRANK THE FRANK!

  • amazing, but seeing him play would be nice.

  • So many good memories with this song it makes my skin crawl. I still have this live version on cassette it's time to get it on cd.

  • CHUCK BERRY I THINK WOULD LOVE IT

  • Great version of a great song by a great guitarplayer. However not a very great video! Hmmmm...
