Janis was a total multi-tasker. Whether it was gritty soul, full-tilt boogie rock (see what I did there?), earthy funk or down-and-dirty, gutbucket blues, she did it, and she did it with style, class, soul and a swagger unmatched by today's "music scene". She IS the definition of a total badass.
this was a show on san francisco KQED public TV - aired in 1966 , they also had similar projects grateful dead jefferson airplane etc but in my opinion this is the best its so early psychedelic before the powers that be whispered sweet nothings in janis's ear and gave her the impression she'd be better without "the holding company" .... She actually only brought her guitarist the really cute one with her to full tilt boogie and her later band on Pearl etc sam....???
@illbebad ----the show was aired on KQED PBS station in san francisco its a great whole show that I'm sure is on DVD its a great one because they were all so fresh and young and "the scene" was still flourishing
i bet that set was the place to be when tripping on acid, and actually being there when janis joplin and big brother were rocking, that's just pure bliss.
I love both Janis and Billie but they are most certainly NOT the only two women who could belt it. I think it's a damn shame that so many of Billie's contemporaries are underrated...same goes for Ella...they're great, but they weren't they only great ones.
Hey that's my opinion. Frank Sinatra was crazy for Ella. Called her Miss Ella. You also have Aretha and Grace Slick, and on and on. Those 2 that I mentioned are my personal favs. That's what makes horse races!
@annerenzo Don't forget Aretha Franklin, Grace Slick and Tina Turner who Janis loved to death! Janis was one helluva woman and her band was the bomb! What happened to Big and Holding Company? Her guitarist licks were killers!
thanks for this post, very nice early Janis Joplin/Big Brother artifact....I love how Janis kicks her right leg/foot in beat before singing the phrase "down on me" ....so earnest and young.
Anything seemed POSSSIBLE back then for these folks
Thanks for posting this! It is great to be able to see her perform when she was just another member of the band, and realize that she had to be a leading singer.
Great video! Thanks for the upload. :)

Heard them many times. Saw Tina live once. They are both excellent but l am more of a Billie and Janis fan.

Great video, great music.
I always felt Big Brother and the Holding Company were very under-rated.
I liked them very much and feel that Janis' early music (alongside them) was among her best.
