in my opinion you dont have to think in terms of scales but in terms of chords arpeggios, then it will be much more easier to understand what you are playing, why some notes works and some others doesnt. Also, you can use chords substitution that will make your solo much more intersting.

Have you ever experimented with bass guitar? i feel like when im stuck in a rut, the bass helps me become more creative. especially with slap and pop bass playing.
