Thank you for posting this. Can you tell me when and where Joan sang this song, please? I wonder why it is called "Marching up to freedom land" as Joan recorded it as "Ain't gonna let nobody turn me around"!
Thank you Baez971. Google: Wolfgang Vaults. It has free Baez audio concerts some of which included this song(she calls Indira Ghandi a bitch in one performance) Mavis Staples sings this song also on her new CD Never Turn Back.
JB has always been a staunch pacifist (her father was a scientist and a Quaker). But in spite of visiting Cambodia in the 70s, she did not end up pro-Commie. Listen to the song she wrote and sings about the sufferings of the Soviet dissident, Natalya Gorbanevskaya. She also signed a big letter against the crimes of the USSR in the NYTimes. Jane Fonda hated her for that.
Also she didn't sign the letter, she wrote it and had the signatures of dozens of liberals:
Coretta King, Cesar Chavez, Allen Ginsburg, Peter Yarrow, Norman Lear etc. She went to North Viet Nam and Cambodia but not in support of the Commies but rather to end the torture, violence and starvation.
Taddy1, thank you for setting me straight here. How did you come to love all things "Baez"? My mom bought her records as they came out (I was in 2nd and 3rd grade) and one day when I was 15 I remembered we had her albums and started listening and got hooked! Isn't her version of "Birmingham Sunday" haunting?
when I was in 6th grade- 1965, my hip teen-age next door neighbor played me her 1st lp(along with the Supremes and johnny mathis)and House of the Rising Sun hooked me big -time. thank you for blocking those Commie lies that were so popular back then.
Well I am happy that you enjoyed this video. I just wanted to say that I tried to tell this italian lady who is singing Joan Baez' songs that Mrs Baez didn't deserve being treated like this, but she censored my messages, so I'm saying it here. It is a shame to sing the way she does some of the most beautiful Joan Baez' ballads wether Joan wrote them or not. This lady should hide herself instead of showing this!
i like this song.but i like the version I saw in a movie.about a girl whoo met Martin Luther Kg. Jr.we not done with it yet at shcool.but any who its better in my opinion.
I loved it when I watched it in school to

Thanks for posting this video. Now, all we have to do is ask Joan to change her lyrics a bit and swap out Kissinger and Nixon for Cheney and Bush.

The letter was about North Viet Nam and the boat people proved to Fonda that JB was right.
Baez has protested other Commies though in at least: Poland,Czech,Cuba and Russia.
