@owenswift - Why so much concern about age? He is an artist and his musicianship is still with him, and he plays wonderfully well, much better than youngsters, so forget about the clock and enjoy a true musician's artistry!!

50 years before his death and he still looks like an old man....is there any footage of him as a young man, or had cameras even been invented yet?? XD
Funy you should mention it but, the rubato was what I liked the most about this piece. It was played before the current trend towards informed period performances and by a man who was raised in the romantic tradition. Every measure, every nuance of this rendition screams romantic to me. The rubato was exquisite. I don't think Sor would've objected since he lived well into the Romantic Era.
well if he's playing it the way it was written then your also bringing into question the composer...J.S.Bach(as i understand it). are you havin a laugh ? composed many master pieces yoursef?
Who cares about how other musicians play it or the composer's supposed intentions? "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy."
I heard and saw him live in Stockholm in the late 60's. He's the best! Every single tune has a meaning and all of them are treated as individuals by the master.
I still remember the day that they announced that El Maestro passed on...I was in the shower and had the classical station on when they annonced his death. I turned the water off and listened intenetly. They were playing Dowlan's Frog Galliard in the background...
Thats depressing (in a sense that as a guitarist it would be easier to eat with my asshole and shit out of my mouth than to ever play like Segovia) yet inspiring all at once. I am honored to be able to divulge in such virtuosity. Truly makes other masters look like ass masters.Bravo!
*SMILE* It's so nice to see Segovia play again. My step-dad studied with him and Juan Mercadal. He plays the guitar effortlessly as though they angels are guiding his hands. Thanks for uploading this!
Each time he'd tour the US friends would say "see him now because this will be your last chance". I finally did when Segovia was probably in his late 80s (?). Yet he did come back to Santa Barbara, I think, at least once again before he died. PS: 2007 was the 20th anniversary of his death.
Looks like the same movie as the Torroba performance (listed there as "from the 1956 'Paris' film").
Public TV in the US ran a series of his master classes in the early 1960's (I think). So wonderful to hear his playing and his illuminating comments and instructions to his pupils! It would be great to have them on video, too.
Masterpiece play by a master.

One of my favorite things about Segovia's playing is that he's no slave to the metronome. Fabulous timing.
Lualaba 3 years ago
My least favourite thing about Segovia is that he uses entirely too much rubato.
Ostendere 3 years ago
What's rubato? I think my mom used to put that in her spaghetti sauce.

lets just say bwv1 dont knows a shit... lol ..he sad that segovia was not a serius musician.. LoL... he is a number one in classical music

If he can't understand Andres Segovia's approach well enough to appreciate it, then that says more about him than it does about Segovia.

Nice tone, but where's the rythm? You won't find any serious musician (other than guitarists) playing Mozart like that.
bwv1 4 years ago
He's playing an interpretation of Fernando Sor's variations on a Mozart theme. It was written for the guitar, and intended to be played this way.
JonnyGaloshes 4 years ago 2

So it's intended to be played without rythm! Ok, now I see, thank you Sir for the illumination.
