Shows what a fine line there is between "country" and "soul". Of course, if one really digs music, such a line doesn't exist, period This version: beautiful, revelatory, tear-inducing.
I wasn't sure how I felt about this version when I first heard it, but I got slowly reeled in to the point where I had to hear it at least once a day. Roughly 40 replays later, I can say that this is one of the most sublimely beautiful live soul performances it has ever been my privilege to listen to.
Dan Penn's soulful voice and deft phrasing gets better and better with age. He was always an A-List songwriter by anyone's measure. Now would be the time for Mr. Penn & Mr. Oldham to cut an acoustic album that capture the quality and integrity in this live performance and their equally masterful live rendition of Penn's Dark End of the Street. Oldham and Penn together work a kind of magic that's in short supply.
This is fabulous one of the very best performances I've heard of this song-thank you so much for sharing this video with us...may I ask if you could find more of Penn & Oldham? a big hug goes out to you...

Not to say neither can play, especially Spooner, but here's the message: it isn't about instrumental virtuosity; it's about songwriting.
