  • David Tudor plays it better on piano than all these instruments combined

  • I would not be able to keep a straight face if I were performing this.

  • Win

  • I love every performance of 4'33". It is interesting how the piece created a context in which something as simple as a conductor wiping his brow could be so amusing to so many people. And the breaks between movements allowed for this mass of repressed coughing. There is drama here, despite Cage's disinterest in the same.

  • If anyone knows where I can get the sheet music for this it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

  • HOW DID THEY GET GORDON FREEMAN TO SING THE VOCALS?

  • @Exarian NICE ONE XD

  • Jaap van Zweden can conduct this composition waaaaay better

  • !!!

  • lmfao this has to be the funniest video of all time

  • I regret that John Cage did not compose 2:45:33, or 165'33", in exactly the same fashion. It would have been enough for the whole concert.

  • Thats Beautiful!!!

  • That's how Bieber's music should really sound.

  • bullshit

  • I think someone forgot the f sharp in 3:10

    can you hear it???

  • they executed this horribly, did you hear all that noise when they were flipping to the next page?! dreadful.

    and the audience laughing?! pitiful.

not to mention the coughing, despicable.

    horrid, horrid performance.

  • dobry trans nie jest zły

  • Does the conductor and the players really need the sheets? Or is it part of the indispensable ritual to have the sheets?

  • kurwa chyba mi się słuchawki zje*ały. nic nie słychać

  • I was waiting for something to happen and than remembered what my Prof told us... that this is actually 4'33 silent.... This is morelikely a joke than Art

  • LOL owned everyone. Bet nobody was expecting that.

  • they're turning to the next page! now i can *cough cough*

  • yay! i wrote a new song... 3:44 XDDD

  • This is the best song ever.

You can play it as loud as you want and the neighbours will never complain!

  • *insert pun here*

  • john cage is just a talentless troll. he's, in fact, the first troll in history

  • This isn't music.

  • @geldofpunk32 IT IS BUT I IS ITS OWN STYLE AND ITS TRYING TO GET YOU TO TAKE NOTICE OF THINGS WE TAKE OR GRANIT

  • Merzbow should do a cover of this?

  • listen at least you can't say that they spoofs the music

  • Its stuff like this that makes me wonder if i'm the only sane person left in the world :(

  • o.o and then they applaud

  • well..you know what john? imma compose a song thats 4'34!!! ohhhh burn!!!

  • The point of this (and not getting all up my arse kinda thing) the silence gives way for whatever noise is within that 4.33 and that is classed as the sound at the time.

Dull I know.. but there ya go :|

  • @PeterTRFC I always appreciate people like you that come and comment educationally wise, you know? With this being said, I was wondering if I could bother you with a question. Where can I find a good source to read about this song. I use to be in band in high school and practice piano very rarely due to school priorities, so this is why I ask. Thanks in advance! -Lupita.

  • I made 99% on Guitar Hero Expert Mode playing this song. With Drums, Guitar and Microphone at the same time.

  • @CoalaBob why couldnt you do 100%?

  • Thats defo getting played at my next gig!

  • 4:29 ahahaha somebody sneezed!

  • I have "heard" better perfomances...

  • I don't get it...

  • totally ridiculous...

  • Technically you could write sheet music for this... it would just be all rests though lol

  • This is a completely new dimension of music, isn't it!? I'm impressed, it's my number one hit now.

  • is there a hardrock or heavy metal version of that?

  • i can't believe, that even professional musicians aren't able to tune their instruments right. this sounds terrible

  • I love the chorus!

  • tune.

  • Wonderfull performance!

  • Please somebody..explain to me, where exactly is art in this? I just dont get it.

  • orchestra is gay

  • I don't wanna brag, but i can play this on every instrument in the world

  • @tjejbil ya well i can play it on every instrument in the world, behind my head with my eyes closed

  • wait wait wait wait.... they APPLAUDED?!

YOU PAID $200 TO HEAR THAT!

alright now lets take a bunch of blind people to see David Copperfield.

  • @Ultrox007 you're missing the point of this. this song is to show that music is not just instruments. but that music is part of every day life. this song will never be exactly the same as the one before it which is the brilliance of it. every cough, every whisper, every footstep is performed not just by the orchestra, but also by the audience. thus making it interactive. the idea behind this actually is brilliant. but it's an idea that most don't agree with or just plain don't understand.

  • finally a song i can play

  • let's have a techno rave to this and jandek.

  • how i have to pay to get some silence?

  • THIS for christmas number 1!

    BETTER THAN X FACTOR SHITE!

  • i cried

  • realy epic...

    I am so moved...

  • Genius!

  • What a massive troll.

  • I'm pretty sure he stole the hook in this song. Can't remember from where, though.

  • wow... i can hear the notes... :)

  • @wolfbiker1 you are seriously lucky!!!

  • is this a joke...? for christmas no.1? seriously?

  • very lively crowd

  • I'm going to use this as my ring tone.

  • wundervoll... niiiiicht..

  • You can actually download the album of this from itunes for £1.29. What a bargin, though the track times don't even add up to 4:33, fail!

  • i saw this on music class. my genius of a teacher started talking about how music starts with silence, then he talked about the meaning of life. what do you think is the meaning of this piece?

  • @BeheadedUnicorn what i've been reading is that the art just "ran out", the same thing happened in a painting exhibition at the MOMA in New York in 1969...

    sorry for my english ^^

  • @BeheadedUnicorn what i've been reading is that the art just "ran out", the same thing happened in a painting exhibition at the MOMA in New York in 1969...

    sorry for my english ^^

  • @BeheadedUnicorn

Cage was big on Zen Buddhism. The piece is more meditative than entertainment - it's to realize that you cannot have silence, and paradoxically as you try to listen for any sound from the performer the other sounds around you seem to become louder, such as your own breathing and seats shifting etc. In essence, even the most insignificant things around you have a place in the world and are more complex than we give them credit. It's philosophy rather than entertainment.

  • Just sneeze to ruin it, or start whistling a catchy tune instead. :)

  • Anyone got the lyrics for this?

  • this is like a complete waste of talent~ so much GDP wasted sitting there

  • 1:07, look at the clock closely

  • @vito321321

    oh! what the f***k?

  • @vito321321 It skips :O

  • I love this song it took me forever to learn how to play this on the piano

  • I am listening every monday morning at school John Cage 4:33;d but school version is extended to 60 minutes xdd

  • @Patryk737 oh my god... it's so sad. :-(

  • This is easily the best piece of music ever written.

  • Are there any mashups of this with the Nutopian National Anthem by John Lennon? I'd love to hear that.

  • This is the only song I know how to play on the piano.

  • Best moments: 1:20 2:40 3:20 . i can`t stop listen this song!

  • Comment removed

  • Isn't this kinda like selling a canvas without a painting on it?

  • @drewbols More like selling a pane of glass i'd say.

  • zajebiste !! <33 moge tego sluchac godzinami

  • The music is in silence. It's to show that there is music in other stuff, if you were there, you would have heard noise from the audience and the traffic around the building, that's what John cage interpretted as "music."

  • I dont get it? theres no music? or is that the whole point?

  • @jardini0 Music is all around you if you listen closely.

  • muszę to mieć na mp3!

  • Beautiful rendition!

  • Nothing so majestic as those long moments of silence in a Quaker meeting.

  • How is this a song

  • The most amusing part about this piece is in between the movements.

  • I wonder if Cage anticipated stuff like the conductor mopping his brow...

  • Will you guys shut up? I'm listening to the song!

  • Needs More cowbell.

  • @PandemoniumBandable if there was ever a song that DIDN'T need more cowbell...

  • when is paul oakenfold gonna do a remix?

un where are 'pans people' when u really need um?

  • is this real?

  • @saffron6005 yep

  • this man thinks he's a genius. and amazingly it's not pretentious at ALL!

  • following the (successful) campaign to make Rage Against The Machine the christmas number 1 in 2009, to counter the usual manaufactured pop tripe that has a tendency to dominate that position after a lengthy Pop Idol / X factor campaign, there is talk that John Cage's 4'33" will be pushed for Christmas number 1, 2010. Several versions are on iTunes, don't buy it yet!! Wait 4 months!

  • Lata cwiczen zeby dojsc do takiej perfekcjii :p

  • fun fun fun!!

  • ♩ ♪ ♫ ♬ ♭ ♮ ♯ of silence

  • I will denounce this man, I composed the same 100 years ago

  • jajajajajajjajajjajajjaj k grande che

  • Is it available on a CD or something?

  • his works make a lot more sense once you've tried acid.

  • Silly man.

  • Puro postmodernismo de jhon cage.

  • John Cage does this because he can. There are no rules that state music has to be purely baroque and follow all of the composers before the 20th century. This age is the age of modern music. 4'33" is a perfect example of how sounds of everyday life are covered because of what is written on a page. John Cage merely tries to open everyone's minds to accept what is not accepted. Think of this music not as trash but as modern in the age of electronic and serialistic tonality.

  • @Mknight2059 shut. up.

  • OK, who's done the drum 'n bass remix?

  • I try with my guitar, but i cant, but it is so hard to play

  • I will compose an opera called " 2 hours" !!!!

  • @jerrygollay

It's not an opera without singing.

  • @jerrygollay Not funny. John Cage wrote this to remember the bombardement of Hiroshima and Nagasaky which last 4'33"

  • WHY WERE THEY CLAPPING!? I have concluded that John Cage is a massive twat. Someone should have farted and made it interesting...

  • que irrespetuosa la gente, reirse en la mitad de una obra musical

  • played it wrong.. way over 4 33 hehe

  • Actually its in the C Pentatonic scale.

  • das war anstrengend

  • wow, that's fucking genious. have a music piece composed by nothing but silence? what an unique and totally unpretentiously artistic move, which can only be accepted by people who "get it", in other words, people who are better than your common scum.

seriously though, this is gay. it also has to be a bitch for the musicians, that whole time without coughing, sneezing, adjusting your briefs or scratching yourself

  • @finowa Well, technically, Cage composed it so that any sounds you do hear are spontaneous, making the piece 'by chance' . Indeed, it was made to be 4'33" of pure silence, but dont be fooled into thinking they werent allowed to make a noise.

  • you dont get it, the music comes from the sounds of the audience and the room... you can even see the musicians talking. i think its a beautiful idea.

  • omg loved it!

  • wow.....sounds really great....
