I love every performance of 4'33". It is interesting how the piece created a context in which something as simple as a conductor wiping his brow could be so amusing to so many people. And the breaks between movements allowed for this mass of repressed coughing. There is drama here, despite Cage's disinterest in the same.
I was waiting for something to happen and than remembered what my Prof told us... that this is actually 4'33 silent.... This is morelikely a joke than Art
The point of this (and not getting all up my arse kinda thing) the silence gives way for whatever noise is within that 4.33 and that is classed as the sound at the time.
@PeterTRFC I always appreciate people like you that come and comment educationally wise, you know? With this being said, I was wondering if I could bother you with a question. Where can I find a good source to read about this song. I use to be in band in high school and practice piano very rarely due to school priorities, so this is why I ask. Thanks in advance! -Lupita.
@Ultrox007 you're missing the point of this. this song is to show that music is not just instruments. but that music is part of every day life. this song will never be exactly the same as the one before it which is the brilliance of it. every cough, every whisper, every footstep is performed not just by the orchestra, but also by the audience. thus making it interactive. the idea behind this actually is brilliant. but it's an idea that most don't agree with or just plain don't understand.
i saw this on music class. my genius of a teacher started talking about how music starts with silence, then he talked about the meaning of life. what do you think is the meaning of this piece?
@BeheadedUnicorn what i've been reading is that the art just "ran out", the same thing happened in a painting exhibition at the MOMA in New York in 1969...
@BeheadedUnicorn what i've been reading is that the art just "ran out", the same thing happened in a painting exhibition at the MOMA in New York in 1969...
Cage was big on Zen Buddhism. The piece is more meditative than entertainment - it's to realize that you cannot have silence, and paradoxically as you try to listen for any sound from the performer the other sounds around you seem to become louder, such as your own breathing and seats shifting etc. In essence, even the most insignificant things around you have a place in the world and are more complex than we give them credit. It's philosophy rather than entertainment.
The music is in silence. It's to show that there is music in other stuff, if you were there, you would have heard noise from the audience and the traffic around the building, that's what John cage interpretted as "music."
following the (successful) campaign to make Rage Against The Machine the christmas number 1 in 2009, to counter the usual manaufactured pop tripe that has a tendency to dominate that position after a lengthy Pop Idol / X factor campaign, there is talk that John Cage's 4'33" will be pushed for Christmas number 1, 2010. Several versions are on iTunes, don't buy it yet!! Wait 4 months!
John Cage does this because he can. There are no rules that state music has to be purely baroque and follow all of the composers before the 20th century. This age is the age of modern music. 4'33" is a perfect example of how sounds of everyday life are covered because of what is written on a page. John Cage merely tries to open everyone's minds to accept what is not accepted. Think of this music not as trash but as modern in the age of electronic and serialistic tonality.
wow, that's fucking genious. have a music piece composed by nothing but silence? what an unique and totally unpretentiously artistic move, which can only be accepted by people who "get it", in other words, people who are better than your common scum.
seriously though, this is gay. it also has to be a bitch for the musicians, that whole time without coughing, sneezing, adjusting your briefs or scratching yourself
@finowa Well, technically, Cage composed it so that any sounds you do hear are spontaneous, making the piece 'by chance' . Indeed, it was made to be 4'33" of pure silence, but dont be fooled into thinking they werent allowed to make a noise.
you dont get it, the music comes from the sounds of the audience and the room... you can even see the musicians talking. i think its a beautiful idea.
